If you invested in a poplin maxi skirt last summer, then congratulations: you were ahead of the curve. You know the one I’m talking about: that crisp, slightly structured cotton skirt that turned up everywhere from farmers’ markets to summer concerts. Well it’s back for spring, just like I knew it would be. Although it never really left (mine just hibernated for a while in my guest closet.)
What I like best about the poplin maxi skirt is that it feels effortless without looking undone. The typically cotton fabric has just enough body to hold a shape and it’s simple enough to pair with almost anything. (Mine is cotton with a smocked waist from Madewell, but there are lots of options out there!) But the versatility is exactly what makes it a spring wardrobe staple. I like to break up my jeans / denim shorts routine in the summer and the maxi skirt helped last summer. I paired it with sleeveless sweaters, structured vests, and even just simple tees. It’s a really nice essential to have on hand for the next 6 months.
Since spring dressing is all about navigating that awkward in-between weather, a lightweight sweater is the perfect bridge for our spring. I just picked up this Quince one and I love how easily it pairs with the skirt. The pairing works because it’s of the contrast: the relaxed, slightly slouchy top against the clean fall of the skirt. I suggest tucking loosely at the front towards the side — a full tuck looks too neat and bulky. You can also leave it untucked as well, but I do believe that half-tuck sweet spot is everything; it’s the millennial hill I will die on.
You can find my striped sweater here! Under $50, too.
I’ve rounded up a few options of poplin skirts, all cotton and under $150. My Madewell option is on sale this week for 25% off. It runs generously, as I’m in the medium. Find it here.
