I can’t explain it but every year, right around this time, my double denim clock goes off. I’m not even kidding. (See this phenom in the years of 2024, 2023 for reference) So here in 2026, checking it off my list, I suppose. You see I ordered this shirt from this month’s Nuuly and realized it worked PERFECTLY with these Gap jeans. This outfit is the exact reason I like Nuuly, especially in slower style months. But I’ve thought about this whole double denim thing — why does the denim on denim alert go off in January for me? And after about 5 minutes of introspection, I think I know why.
After the rush of the holidays, I tend to feel like a blank slate. And not necessarily in like a positive, ‘new year, new me’ way. More like an ‘oh no I deleted everything’ kind of way. You see, I’ve been a style blogger for as long as I can remember and so content is always top of mind. Something about January 1 hits and I think ‘ok…now what?’ when it comes to my content and my style. This is default for me, BUT in my later, wiser years I’ve realized that I don’t have to reinvent myself every year. And so I think I start leaning on the basics to build my content, especially when I don’t really know what else to do. What’s the most basic of style? Denim. And how do we elevate that basic? We double it. We layer it. We belt it and put giant earrings on and call it a day. I’m just getting back to my basics this January. Which is probably why I like this outfit so much.
I like the photos, I liked wearing it. And you already I really like this pair of Gap jeans. Also wanna know something? I’ve yet to wash them. I’ve broken them in just right and I don’t wanna lose the shape. Am I nasty? We may never know.
Do you have a ‘basic’ outfit you find yourself returning to when you just don’t know what else to wear? I think mine is this. When in doubt, double your denim.
