I like to consider myself adventurous with style but over the years I’ve learned to not jump on every trend. And I learned this lesson by … jumping on every trend. Colored jeans are the ones that stick out in my mind first. Oh, you know — when I bought up just about every color known to mankind? Legs (like a crayon box) for days. I’ve since toned down my denim choices and prefer to stay true with classic styles. I have my staples — skinny jeans, a relaxed boyfriend jean, white jeans and recently, a few flare leg jeans. So it surprised me when I pounced on this cropped flare pair from my styling session last week with Trunk Club. (Which I loved and have a post coming up next week about it!) I wasn’t sure they would fit but they ended up fitting like a glove and I loved them paired with a simple button down, just to give a typical casual outfit for me a different look than usual. It’s nice to have so many options of silhouettes these days with denim. You always keep me guessing, denim. Never change — by always changing.

The thing with this cropped flare silhouette — or flare denim in general — is that there are many levels of flare. If you aren’t feeling up for the full flare experience, you can always play it safe. And then of course there is the daredevil flare that is way too over the top for me, but I silently nod those who can effortlessly pull them off. I like to stick with the in-between, Goldilocks option — not too little, not too much but just right.

I’m headed south to Austin this weekend! If you are around on Sunday, pop into Trinity Hall for the Sudo House experience with me from 2-5. No SXSW badge needed — just drinks, bites and chats by the fire. Actually I don’t think there is going to be a fire, but we can pretend. Chats by iPhone light, how’s that?

  1. Too funny…I just bought cropped flares last week and was surprised at myself too. I thought they would only work on leggy gals like yourself, but I’m only 5’3″ and I think they look pretty cute, even in flats! We will probably look back on cropped flares liked color denim one day but for now let’s enjoy 🙂

  2. Looking at your awesome jeans, I JUST realized that my slightly-t00-short flares can just be cropped even more and then they’ll be totally in again.
