It scares me sometimes how much I’m drawn to wearing color. I think I’ve said this before but I don’t really like standing out in the crowd. I’d rather just be quiet and sneaky than stick out. But my penchant for color is alarming and doesn’t help my case for wanting to sneak in somewhere unnoticed. In other words, I’d be a terrible spy. But I’d be a great clown. There’s always the bright side of things, right?

In other news, if you aren’t using the term ‘oxblood’ for that old worn out term burgundy or worse maroon (I shudder), then you are stuck in the past my friend. Burgundy is dead. Oxblood is the new…black*. And also I made up poppy for this color of red-orange,  just in case it catches on I’d like the credit.

*I also just made that up. My validity is decreasing by the day, isn’t it?

  1. In my favorite movie, A Date with Judy, a silly musical from 1947, there’s a line about how the main teenager Judy wants oxblood nailpolish and false eyelashes. Oxblood is classic, maroon is just vulgar. 😉

  2. Seriously…the colour mixing in this is incredible & edible : )

Like a blood orange with some pink candy floss. oohhh yeah… that sounds yummy!I love the whole look. This will be making my top five for the week.

  3. Oxblood is totally the new black, at least until pink is the new black, again. Who can keep up?! Either way, it all looks great together! xo!

  4. I <3 oxblood. And I love that collar necklace, too!!

  5. Love oxblood! I’m wearing it today!  And I fully accept your designation of poppy to that color. It fits.

  6. I agree with the others that while the color is gorgeous and perfectly warm and saturated for fall, the fashion community could have come up with a more creative term. Oxblood is simply grotesque. I can’t help but thinking there are plenty of classy wine terms that could be employed? I’ll say I’m wearing cabernet today.

  7. Oh, no. Shuddering on maroon? Heart. Broken. Seriously, though, at the first mention of oxblood, I was thinking, “do all the non-Aggies know that’s really maroon?”

    Cute outfit and gig ’em.

    1. The first thing I thought when I read this was “I hope there aren’t any aggies reading this.” Life shouldn’t be that hard for y’all…

    2. Haha I guess that was a little dig on Aggies, wasn’t it? I promise I don’t have anything against Aggies. How could I? You should Bama what was up this past weekend, right??

  8. BWAHAHAHA! we love your term of poppy! we’ll give you all the credit 🙂
plus you look amazing today! double score for you.

  9. I LOVE this!!  You are already sold out of my size. 🙁 Can you get more???

  10. Ah! Love the color. Love it. I have that same color issue. I was either supposed to be born in an earlier decade OR born in another country. Africa. India. Whichev.

  11. I love those pants! I have been searching for the perfect pair to wear with my mustard yellow sweater. I am the exact same way. I just want to blend in but my love for color doesn’t usually go unnoticed, especially when I wear my favorite color yellow.

  12. I’m loving colors! Most times I often think if you have one item with a bold color then its a must tone everything down, with more subtle colors, but this combo…..jackpot 🙂 Love

  13. Love the poppy colour and would have never thought to put them together, but it works!

  14. Beautiful outfit! I love those colors together!
I have to mention, it’s “penchant” for colors, not “pension”. Unless you’ve figured out how to make rainbows pay for retirement. In which case you need to share.

  15. Wow! Those colors look fantastic together and I never would have thought to put them together. Yay Master of Inspiration, you’ve done it again!!!!

  16. as long as you keep coming up with the cute combos, you can make up all the words/terms you want.  totes valid!  😉  http://www.thismomsgonnasnap.com

  17. One day on my way to workout I looked down and noticed I was wearing bright green shoes, an orange tank and a bright blue sports bra that was peaking out. Thank goodness my shorts were black! I understand the penchant for color. It helps make each day just a little brighter, no pun intended.

  28. Adam Levine is pretty pissed about that whole Oxblood vs Maroon thing. But that’s okay because you are right… oxblood really is the new black! I love this outfit, and the coat is darling.

Also, I thought you were joking last time you said you don’t like to stand out in a crowd. I thought you were being facetious.

  54. HI Kendi,
I got so inspired by one of your looks that I created my own set on Polyvore with it and am finally on a hunt to add those stuff to my wardrobe… Here’s the set: http://chic-ilicious.blogspot.in/2012/11/trendy-and-hippie.html
Have I done justice? Do reply.
    Love,

  55. So funny you mention oxblood (it’s the new “haircalf,” which was before called ponyskin”)–I have had this conversation twice in the last week with women old enough to be your mom (as am I)–before it was burgundy it was called “cordovan.” The last time I remember cordovan being in style was in the early ’80s, when Aigner was the must-have brand and all of their fabulous riding boots came in cordovan, navy and taupe…so when is taupe making it’s return, and what will it be called?

Love your blog–you have great style, and your brain is just as smart….

  56. LOVE the colors as always! What lipstick are you wearing?? Matches perfect with your “poppy”! 😉

  57. The oxblood paired with your “poppy” is perfect! I almost bought that coat from Anthro last year! Absolutely love the color 🙂

  60. I like the term burgundy, this ‘Ox Blood’ really makes me think of an ox bleeding. Sad. But I get the picture, and the shade is beautiful, along with your bright poppy, I can’t help but want to do a little color blocking myself 🙂
