We are just almost to coat season and I for one love a layer, especially a coat. I really believe a coat can turn an outfit around and so I have quite a few for different outfits. However, I did not have a charcoal grey coat, so when Quince reached out to gift one, I jumped on the opportunity. (This coat is gifted but this review isn’t paid or sponsored in any way.)
As you know, I am not new to Quince, hell — I own like a million sweaters from them by now. (In my opinion their sweaters are the best product they have.) But I am new to their outerwear game, especially coats. I have tried a puffer from Quince before but never a full on coat. (I love it, too!) So let’s review this coat!
This is a single breasted coat and it fits beautifully. I am in the medium and it fits perfectly, perhaps the tiniest bit snug at the armpits with a bulky sweater. If I wanted to layer bulkier sweaters underneath, I would go up one size. But this is typical for me and coats. I am usually an 8 or a 10 in coats at J.Crew, depending on the fit. Here I am in the medium, fits like a size 8. If you like to layer bulky sweaters, go up one size.
The wool itself reminds me of J.Crew, it has the same fit and feel as a coat I have from J.Crew. It is a lighter weight than a typical J.Crew coat, but not necessarily thin, just not a heavier wool. For instance, I wouldn’t wear this for a below 15º day, but those days are rare for me. When the weather gets below freezing here, it is an EVENT. So for our mild winters here in Texas, this weight is perfect. I’m in and out of a warm car most winter days, not ever really ‘facing the elements’ if you will. So for a nice warm layer, this is perfect. I will get a ton of wear of out of this coat, for that reason, in fact. It’s not too puffy or too heavy, so it’s easy to carry. Plus it’s easy to layer under. If I need something warmer, I reach for a puffer coat anyways.
I landed on this charcoal color because I already have a black coat and a few camel color coats, even though that is my favorite color for a coat. I also wanted a navy one, but alas that color is sold out. So Charcoal was an interesting choice for me, just to break up my all black outfits, especially. I ended up loving this option, as it looks incredibly chic. If you are looking for a different coat option this winter, consider a charcoal grey. Quite underrated in the hue department.
Overall I do think this is a great coat for the price. It’s 80% Italian wool / 20% nylon, fully lined with pockets and interior pockets as well. As far as warmth, I would say it’s lightweight than I was expecting but works well for Texas. If I wanted a warmer feel I’d also go with a double-breasted coat instead of single. Overall I’d give this coat a 4/5 stars for value, fit and style. Not quite a 5, since it’s not the warmest of all coats.
If you are looking for an under $200 wool coat, this is a lovely option.
