I’ll be honest—I had fully broken up with Amazon Fashion. After too many try on hauls or late-night impulse buys that didn’t live up to the reviews, I gave it a hard pass. So almost two years ago, I quietly stepped away from buying anything Amazon Fashion. It wasn’t *too* dramatic of an exit, just a slow realization that the pieces I was ordering weren’t adding much to my closet or my style. It felt forced and I ended up with excess. I’ll be honest that I missed the ease, but not the overwhelm. Lately, though, I’ve been rethinking how and where I shop. Out of curiosity (and maybe a little hope), I decided to give Amazon another try. I went in with low expectations and ended up pleasantly surprised. I ordered a few tops for my NYC trip (seen here) and absolutely loved them. The price matched the expectations and the quality exceeded. So I dug in a little bit more and placed an order.
I kept my expectations low and my search pretty simple, just a few basics I thought might work. A couple of misses, yes but also a few real wins. I ended up keeping more than I planned (don’t we always?), and I snapped some photos to show you how everything looks on. Scroll through for the pieces I loved, plus notes on fit, feel, and whether they’re actually worth adding to cart.
Contrast Maxi Dress
This dress is a star! I can’t wait to wear it this week. The quality feels like Zara or Mango, which really surprised me. It isn’t lined but it’s not sheer and the fabric is thicker like linen (read: it is NOT linen.) It’s gorgeous and the fabric is a nice weight so it drapes well. I did have to give it a good steam to get the fold lines out but it steamed out beautifully too.
I am in the large and it fits me perfectly. It runs smaller at the shoulders / bust, but if that’s not an issue for you stay TTS. Comes in a few colors but this is the ‘beige.’
Worn with my Tkees sandals.
Sleeveless Sweater Top
This is a top I’ve been wearing NON stop since I got it! I am in the medium, it runs TTS but if you want it to fit a bit looser like the model go up one size (especially if you have a bigger bust!)
It’s under $20, too! It’s a nice bouncy knit, slightly thicker woven knit but not a warm sweater fabric. My only issue is that if you wear a crossbody (like the Clare V one) it will pill where there is friction. I just simply took my sweater shaver to it and voila! Like new. But it is the nature of this fabric, just FYI.
Worn with J.Crew Barrel Chino pants and Quince Leather Tote.
Oversized Summer Graphic Tee
This is one of two oversized graphic tees that I got and this one is a fave! Definitely a keeper. The fabric is soft, the graphic is vibrant, I love it all. I ended up going with a large even though it was oversized and I am glad I did. It is big but I like it to be extra oversized, so a large is perfect for me. (AKA Fits oversized for a 8-10 with a bigger chest)
Love this one and it’s a good price — under $20!
Worn with my Agolde Parker shorts (30) and the amazon bow flats.
Oversized Tee Matching Set
I am only slightly offended that in the description of this set it says ‘pajamas’. I find this set to be much more chic than some pajamas, but I suppose I could sleep soundly in this set as well. For all intents and purposes, I’m calling this a matching set not PJs. (The “intents and purposes” is my ego.) I wore this today actually with my new sneakers and loved it (post coming tomorrow)! So comfortable and I find it very pulled together.
I had low expectations for this set but – I’m actually wearing it right now I love it so. It is defiintely knock off Varley – or as I like to say ‘we have Varley at home’ But you know what? I’ll take it because it’s pretty damn good quality.
Now my biggest complaint is that there is not tag to see what is the front or the back. But you figure it out once you get it on. I am in the large and the top is a bit too big but the shorts fit PERFECTLY. (Read the reviews!) I’ll take a bigger shirt for looser shorts any day.
As worn with my past Veronica Beard sandals but these are similar.
Sleeveless Knit Top and Striped Boxer Shorts
Another top that I’ve shared before and actually was one of the ones that made me curious about Amazon again. This is a very lightweight knit top; it’s comfortable and cool for summer. It does run generously – I am in the large and it’s probably too big but I like it so I kept it. Stay TTS or even go down a size if you are in between. I’ve washed this one (hung to dry) and it washed out perfectly, not shrinkage or fading.
Have you gotten into the boxer short trend yet? I’ve hesitated, I’ll be honest. The closest I’ve gotten to it are the poplin shorts I wear from Quince. But these are actually really cute and fit well. (I got the large! I recommend going up a size for a looser / relaxed look.)This brand comes in so many colors but I was in between these and a blue stripe. These shipped faster so beige it was! It’s a cute loko and I feel like if you keep the rest of your outfit pretty simple, it can work.
Worn with the bow flats.
Button Front Sweater Vest
I’ve shared this sweater vest before but here she is again in all her glory. I LOVE this top, I can’t believe I’m saying that but it’s so good especially for the price!
As for sizing: I will say – she does run small. ESPECIALLY WITH BOOBS. So if you need extra room, go up a size. This is the large, and it fits well but still tailored. Stretchy knit fabric, I’ve washed it and hung to dry and it didn’t shrink, looks brand new. The buttons are fully functional.
Worn with Quince Crepe shorts and Tkees sandals.
Denim Shirt Dress
Another great dress that I am trying to decide if it’s a keep! This denim fabric is thicker with some bouncy stretch to it. I am in the medium and it’s probably just a touch short as it is a shift dress and there’s not much flexibility with length and sitting. So for my height, I’d go up to a large if I were going to keep.
This is a darling dress, it reminds me of Tuckernuck! The v-neck is a bit low cut, just FYI. But otherwise it’s all true to size and a really nice weight / quality.
Pleated Peplum Top
I love this one! One note: I need to wear a different bra with this as this is a push up /strapless bra and it makes the pleats weird. I would wear a less ‘bouncy’ bra (if that makes sense!) like a Neiwai or this bra here. Otherwise it’s a really cute fit! I am in the medium, true to size. Comes in a few other colors too! But I love the butter yellow right now.
Wore with my Agolde Parker Shorts.
Honorable Mentions
These next pieces, I am unsure if I’m going to keep (most likely won’t!) but I do think they’re great recommendations, if you’re looking for styles like this!
Summer Sleeveless Scoop Dress
Okay so I bought this one because I thought ‘swimsuit coverup’ BUT you guys, it’s actually a really pretty dress! It is a more textured knit, but not terry cloth like I initially thought. So keep that in mind! You could wear it to the pool, of course, but it’s a really cute dress for dinner too. (Every dress can be a swimsuit cover up but not every swimsuit cover up is a dress.)
I am in the ‘khaki’ color, it’s true khaki / light tan. I am in the large, it is a fitted dress so the large is great for me!
Flutter Sleeve Bow Dress
I’ve seen this dress around and I loved it on others. There were a lot of things I like about it – it’s high quality, the zipper in the back is nice, I love that it is fully lined. It fits well and it came out of the package ready to go. All good things! I am in the large and this is the right size and length for me.
I can’t decide if I feel like a baby in this dress so I don’t know if it’s a keeper for me. I’m sure it was my style at one time but I don’t know if it aligns now. I’ve got 25 more days to decide…
Worn with my Jeffrey Campbell Platforms, but I’ve linked similar here.
Denim Pullover
The good news is that this top is soft, chambray like and it fits really well. On paper, I love this top. But once I got it on I realized it’s just not where my style is headed right now. It’s super cute, a nice weight but just not my style right now. But overall I would recommend!
I am in the medium and it does fit true to size. However I would size up if I were going to keep it, I would want it to to fit a bit boxier and looser overall.
__________
Does this change the direction of my content? Not really. I’ll share how I’m styling my favorites this week and they’ll definitely show up in my WIWLW posts, but I still want quality over quantity for my closet (and for yours.) If I’m sharing it and I’ve hung it in my downsized closet, then you know it’s good. My closet is much too small now to fill it with items I simply won’t wear. (Looking at you, cute chambray top.)
So if you like Amazon content, great! It may show up here from time to time. But if you like where my direction was headed, I’m not veering off that path. Just making a few pit stops every now and then.
One Response
i know affordability is a super valid concern for lots of folks (myself included!) but would be great to see alternatives to amazon. They have a pretty awful track record with workers rights and the environment, to name just a few… and this comment is meant as a “call in” not a “call out”! Thanks for considering
