Today was a nice mix of wind and humidity which basically means that the minute you step outside the air will kill your hair slowly, strand by strand, unraveling whatever curl you spent 20 minutes manipulating it into. So whatever is happening up there is just going to happen. I ended up grabbing my hat from the car that was from a recent trip to the pool and it ended up working out just fine with my outfit. This is when being messy and having a whole arsenal of things in one’s car works out. The not being able to let friends ride with you is a trade off of course, but I have shoes, purses and hats in my car at all times. That’s something right there.

I’ve always been so self conscious with hats for some reason. I guess it’s one more thing that draws attention to you and most of the time you are probably the only person wearing a hat if you are say, out at a restaurant or shopping. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve gotten older and don’t really care any more about anything or I’m just not as shy, but I never mind wearing a hat now even if I’m the only one. In fact, I needed a hat since we were poolside this past weekend and I am at the point in my life where SPF 50 doesn’t even seem high enough to shield me from the sun (whereas I used to just spray that stuff that said it was ‘tanning oil’ on it with SPF 4 but I’m pretty sure it was just coconut scented cooking spray. I have many freckles to thank for that stuff.) Of course sun protection is not only essential to me now but it’s easier because it’s accessory-based; it’s hard not to jump at the chance to remain pasty white and look stylish while doing it.
How this post went from bad hair day to the importance of wearing sunscreen is beyond me. It was supposed to be about my dress and how chambray fabric has taken over everything, everywhere. But that will just have to wait until I wear this dress again.

  1. Love this outfit! I spotted that Madewell dress the other day and I think it is so cute! I can hardly ever stay away from anything that is blue and white, and the added embroidery and great cut…hard to not love it!
Thanks for the heads up that it is on sale, might have to head to the store tomorrow.
    xo

  2. Yes to the skin care protection. My mom is ALWAYS hounding me about this since she has skin cancer on her face. No tanning for me! LOVE the outfit btw AND the hair!

  3. Awesome dress and even awesomer hat! 🙂 Beautiful setting as well. You're looking great these days girl!

  4. I just had to send this dress back 🙁 had it not had that weird drop waist going on, it would have been the PERFECT dress for me. I'm jealous it looks so much better on you than it did on me!

  5. I've been eyeing this dress for awhile! Can't wait for it to go in the good ol' sale section! It looks gorgeous on you, by the way.

  6. Kendi, love this outfit and am a huge fan of yours! But are you planning to return that bag? I eye the tag on it. 😉

  7. Yes, you nailed my relationship with hats. I admire people who wear hats, so I should just stop chickening out so much. And don't worry, all your talk about hats and suncreen didn't outshine the dress. It is beautiful!

  8. Totally get self conscious with hats but I wear a Western hat from Nordstrom everywhere I go practically. I am obsessed with it. Its so stinking cute. It cost me 48.00 but so worth it given its my favorite. Its the straw cowboy hat if you are interested. I wear it mostly when with my daughter or husband with me and I make sure the attention goes to them, not me…lol!!! Darling look you have!!!

  9. Bahaha no. I've had it for a while so no return. But I'm really bad at not cutting off tags or plastic tags. :/ I should maybe take a pair of scissors to this one though! Thanks for the reminder!

  10. I love how original your posts are! They aren't pre-planned styled shoots, they are what you wear every day! I aboslutely love your blog, it's always full of inspiration

  11. That is a perfect summer dress to beat the heat. And it's a good thing you got over your hat-wearing phobia because they really suit you! I love a big floppy hat, I put it on and feel like such a lady! xx http://www.clutch-style.com

  12. i felt the exact same way with hats! and also with sunglasses as well. I felt like they drew extra attention to me, but now that I'm wearing both more often, i'm much more comfortable! love the dress!! and the hat of course 🙂

  13. This outfit is perfect from head to toe! And I feel the same way about hats, which is how I felt about lipstick until one day I just threw up my hands and said 'who cares!'. Now I wear lipstick in any colour and I no longer feel like people are staring. I need to get the same thinking with hats for this summer since I have a whole collection that is currently collecting dust in my closet.

  14. kendi- any pointers on fit of this dress? it is on sale but final sale. thanks!

  15. It is true to size for Madewell (so fairly true to size, I find the dresses fit a bit snug sometimes). It was tighter in my chest so I sized up and liked the fit better. I'd say if you're petite, go with your normal size. If you're tall and blessed in the chest, size up 🙂
