On the third day of our trip, we had to change plans due to the heatwave. We had initially planned to go to the Statue of Liberty and tour the Ellis Island Museum. But this was the first day of the 100º+ days and I just thought ‘do we really want to ride on a ferry in this heat?’ and then walk around for a few hours? I’ve been a few times to the Statue of Liberty but Gemma and Bryan haven’t, so I hated to cheat them out of a very New York tourist staple. But I also knew that a bad experience can ruin a whole event, so we made a quick switch to the sunset cruise of the Statue of Liberty. (For what it’s worth, we used the CityPass and you buy a set amount of tickets and can choose what you want to do, so we could easily cancel our Statue of Liberty booking and swap to at the cruise!) Since our morning was freed up we were able to add on The Metropolitan Museum of Art and it ended up being a highlight of the whole trip!
We then headed downtown and ate lunch at Eataly then went to the 9/11 Museum. We went into the Oracle train station (amazing!), found a Pop Mart (if you have an 8 year old, you get it) and then we walked around the financial district to kill some time before the sunset cruise. We ended up stumbling upon Stone Street, which is considered one of the oldest streets in the city! They’ve closed it off and lots of little bars and restaurants line the narrow street and we popped into a pizza shop for some reprieve.
I had a lot of people reach out to me because of when we were traveling into the city and the crazy heatwave. Was it hot? It was, but honestly it wasn’t anything we aren’t already used to. I hate to say it but this is just how August feels in Texas most of the time. So were we hot at times? Yes but we ended up ducking into shops, museums and we would find shade to walk in. We carried our water bottles as well, so we stayed hydrated, too. Would I have preferred a nice 80 degrees? Yes! But you get what you get, you know?
I loved this dress for this reason though. It is a lightweight cotton and the length was perfect. It was incredibly comfortable but not too hot. My shoes got a touch warm by the end of the day but let me tell you — these were the most comfortable shoes I wore! They’re leather and lightweight, I didn’t even wear socks and there were 0 blisters by the end of the day. I couldn’t believe it. I had blister pads and band-aids just in case, but never needed them! If you walk a lot but want a nice sneaker, I can’t recommend these enough! They’re from Quince and come in other colors, too.

We ended up on the sunset cruise and honestly? It was perfect. It was calming, it was beautiful and they timed it right at sunset. I think another trip we would like to go visit the site, but seeing it on the cruise was a great first experience for G.
