This weekend was pretty much spent in running shorts and a tee. We did the whole ‘let’s throw everything in a box and we will figure it out later” type of move. And here I am, still trying to figure it all out. Also, my husband is a stage 1 hoarder of adolescent memories and I am his interventionist/not his favorite person right now. I was raised by the opposite of a hoarder — meaning if I wasn’t careful my mom would donate a toy if she didn’t think I was playing with it any longer. Needless to say I kept my toys in heavy rotation and still to this day I have a priceless collection of Beanie Babies, that I’m sure will provide a nice retirement for us one day when I sell them to an investor on eBay.  As soon as I get through all of my husband’s boxes, he will have nothing left of his childhood but faint, distant memories backed by no evidence, just like me. Did I even have a childhood? I will never know.
By Sunday afternoon, after looking like a scrub all weekend, I was having dress-up withdrawals. So I looked at my husband and said “we’re going out and I’m wearing a pretty dress.”
We went to Target and I didn’t wear makeup, but it wasn’t cleaning out boxes and we bought some wine. I’ll call it a date.

  1. You look so gorgeous Kendi! And Target + wine sounds like an awesome date night to me 🙂

Also, I posted an outfit inspired by you today…and then proceeded to awkwardly tell the blogging world about a crazy dream I had featuring you (yeah…I know what you’re thinking…total creeper here)…but I figured I should let you know and maybe that MIGHT detract from the creepiness 🙂

  2. My mom is also an anti-hoarder. You’re not using it anymore? Into the Goodwill pile it goes! Her attitude must have rubbed off on me, because my husband hates that I’m always trying to get rid of stuff. Pretty dress!

  3. I am the same way with my husband’s things – he still has homework from 4th grade! So I make a habit of going through his things and throwing them away while he’s not at home…he’ll never know 🙂

Love this flowing printed dress + your top knot = perfect summer attire (for Target or somewhere fancy)!

  4. the dress is gorgeous! I have little left of my childhood but I have become a late in life hoarder. I am so lucky I don’t have a pick-up truck or my garage would be full of thrifted furniture.

  5. I have this dress and it is so easy and fun! Always a go-to. You look stunning!

  6. The color! Make sure to keep some of your husbands childhood memories. Those are always lovely to have!

    1. Haha I am, promise. We’ve gone through the box of saved school work and have made it now to the photos. Photos we are keeping, old homework we are not. 😉

  7. Pretty dress, love the color! My husband and I do Target dates quite often, so your not alone 🙂

  8. My parents had a thing called “the love sack” In which my dad would go around singing a theme song and collect all of our toys we had strewn about the house. Meanwhile we would scramble around and grab up our favorites.

Also, my parents made me narrow down to one tub of memories when I left for college. I was able to go through them and collect the things that really had meaning to me and keep only those. It worked pretty well.

  9. I live 2 hours from a Target so it’s always a great destination date for me. . . But back to you; as always, you shine with effortless cool.

  10. I bet that $24.50 from your beanie Baby windfall will propel you into an early retirement! 🙂

  11. I have a Princess Diana beanie baby with the royal robe and crown that I am convinced will earn me and my husband millions one day on ebay. He rolls his eyes at me now…but just wait.

    1. Oh my gosh — I wanted that one so bad but they were sold out and already going for crazy amounts on the internet at the time. You are so going to be a millionaire.

  12. Natural Beauty! You look stunning. Sometimes just getting out of the house is enough to celebrate!

  13. Love the metallic detail on the dress!
I’ve also whittled down my husbands cherished memorabilia with every move. His favorite is when I ask him to just take a picture of himself with all his track medals so we can toss them.

  14. I just saw your post about depression – and the 920 comments. You always get a ton of feedback, so I’d like to provide extensive feedback – but won’t due to boring you. You are the best fashion blogger out there with your words. Funny, insightful, intelligent and now honest. I didn’t even mention how beautiful you are (just did). It’s not easy to fight through .. what helps me is to know at I’m in a good place with no major natural disasters and have freedom (well, besides the NSA looking at my phone calls…) Keep up the fight – you are obviously loved.

  15. Haha!! Target and wine goes perfectly together! Love the dress!

  16. My husband and I are the same way about that – he grew up with a bit of a hoarder, and I am ruthless about paring down my stuff because I moved around a lot. Each time we move, I always have to have the “You know, if you haven’t used it in 10 years, do you really need it?” conversation. He doesn’t like it, but sometimes it gets the point across.

Kudos to getting dressed up to buy wine. I hate moving, and any break from it I can take is always worth it!

  17. I am starting to have some dress up withdrawals after seeing this dress! It is stunning! Love it!

My boyfriend is the same. He is a huge hoarder when it comes to to random stuff. My hoarding is strictly clothes, magazines, and cupcake liners. The last 2 need to be removed from my list so i can keep my clothes. lol

Thanks for the lovely post Kendi!

  18. this is such a great look! love the dress and who cares about makeup, you look smashin! Oh, in my relationship I am the hoarder. Don’t want to move, like ever so the Mr. doesn’t have to see all the clutter that are super pretty and important memories to me.

  19. Haha what a date! You do look way glam in this though 😉 I’m the same way with keeping things. I get rid of ANYTHING if I haven’t really used it for 6 months to a year. Is that good or bad? Fingers crossed for home pics soon!

  20. i, too, have a huge collection of beanie babies sitting in those clear plastic boxes–of course with all of their tags still on. i’m waiting for someone to tell me it’s time to sell them but i’m pretty sure everyone bought them so there’s no one left to buy them!

    1. my mom let my nephews and dog play with a few of my beanie babies one day and they ended up tearing the tags off. I am ashamed to say that I freaked out about the ones that now have no tags, like there goes my investment plan.

  21. Aren’t you so glad you can buy wine at Target?!! I know I am! On a separate note, funny your childhood sounds exactly like mine – I’m an only child and my mother STILL threw away every single “vintage” 80’s barbie I owned, there’s nothing left to show of the awesome collection I once had!! *sigh.

  48. Kendi you look stunning! I love that mustard on your coloration and I’m totally digging the messy bun! You’re one of my favorite bloggers, and funniest to boot!

  49. Such a beautiful dress! Love the hair and sunglasses shot at the bottom too.
I’m a cut-throat purger as well. My mom (who is the opposite) doesn’t understand how I can throw away my kid’s school projects or give away clothes that no longer fit. I just hate having a whole bunch of extra crap around! Your hubby will get over it, I’m sure.

  51. Kendi, I’ve been keeping up with your blog lately, and I just wanted to tell you how much I love the way you’re letting us into the more personal aspects of your life. (Like Target dates, heh, same here.) Seems like everything is just more you and things feels very natural and flow-y if that makes any sense at all. Can’t really explain quantitatively, so will just say, I love this “new” Kendi Everyday. <3

  52. My husband is the same way. And a move is the perfect opportunity to lighten up the baggage 😉

  53. Pretty dress Kendi. I will agree with another commenter that I love reading your stories. This one was so funny I read it aloud ro my husband. Its just like us!

  55. What a lovely dress!

I can’t imagine just throwing things in a box and figuring it out later unless it was absolutely necessary. Wow.

  56. “I’ll call it a date.” Sounds like something from your old marriage blog, which by the way, CRACKED me up. All the time. Out loud. At work. Amazing. You have an amazing sense of humor!!!

My boyfriend hoards weird teenager stuff too – like his old work uniforms! But it’s not too bad thankfully. I had a huge beanie baby collection too, but I’m not sure where that went. As I have a non-hoarder mother as well, I’m sadly thinking it was donated.
