A lot of times people come into the shop and ask if I designed all of the clothes. I’m not sure why but it is wide-spread confusion, as I design none of the clothes. With exception of ill-proportioned paper dolls I’d make as a child, I do not draw. No one would ever let me near a drawing board (or whatever designers use) for the sheer sanctity of design. Mainly because it would be hard to make patterns from stick figures colored in with magic markers and small arrows explaining what things actually are. I wish I was talented in designing; but buying good designs that I can do.
Every once in a while a dress comes in at the shop and it’s so good that I wish I would have designed it. The way it moves, the way it falls — it’s perfection. This is that dress. I wish I could tell people that I’ve spent my life designing this one piece. This dress, this would have been my opus.
But you know, those who can’t, sell. Isn’t that what they say?

    1. It’s from Melie Bianco about 3 years ago 🙁 I’ve searched high and low for a similar one but came up empty! It’s called the “Riley” if you want to do an ebay search 😉

  1. wonderful shade of green and perfect pleats!
I bet the assumption that a shop owner also designs is similar to the one where if you’re tall you must play basketball. Do you get that one a lot too? People are always so disappointed to learn that not only did I never play for the WNBA, I pretty much rode the bench when I was on the JV basketball team LOL

  2. Although I’ve been following your blog for over a year now, this is the first time I’ve commented. It’s the dress that compelled me to stop lurking and start talking. =) Indeed, it’s a gorgeous dress in a gorgeous color! I have a dress in same hue (albeit completely different style) that I can’t wait to wear to a wedding this summer. I love seeing your seemingly effortless style come together each day and you’re always at the top of my morning reading list. Have a great week!

  3. Love this Kendi! I have designer ambitions yet it ends there, as I have the same artistic ability as you it seems. Nonetheless, picking out good design is such a talent as well. I hope I can some day visit your shop as it seems like a fabulous little place of fashion.

  4. I always thought the saying was “those who can’t, buy.” Or at least that’s what I tell myself.

LOVE this dress – total perfection.

  8. Pretty dress. Whoever designed it is a genius. You know, with all the great designs you purchase, maybe it’s time you designed your own clothes? I’m sure they will be a huge hit.

  9. Such a gorgeous dress and yet not a single photo sans jacket. Tsk tsk, blogger fail

  10. Hi Leah, a little too harsh don’t you think? “Blogger fail”? Come on, even I thought I wanted to see the dress without the jacket, but great all the same. Let’s not be overly critical ok?
Great dress Kendi, and good job too!

  11. Gorgeous dress, the color is so fresh and fab! Never mind your drawing skills, when you have such a great talent for styling awesome looks like this.

  12. I was a fashion designer in my head as a child. I could draw pretty well but I never learned to sew. Small detail. But hey, you’ve got great taste in buying and styling, so who cares if you didn’t design it?!

  21. Yeah, I can't even draw a straight line to save my life. 🙂 Ahhh I love this dress – gorgeous shades of green always remind me of iconic pieces like the dress in Atonement or the green scarf in Confessions of a Shopaholic haha (oh well, it's a sacred book/movie to me….)

The green dress is what caught my eyes when I landed here. The way it flows and the gold belt. Ahh perfection.

  30. The colours in this outfit couldn’t be more perfect for you. I couldn’t wear a dress like that, so I’ll let you rock that one.

  31. I owned a little boutique for a couple years (we sold it earlier this year!) and people would ALWAYS ask me the same question! Sometimes I would joke, “Yep, I have a sewing machine in the back room, that’s what I do at night!” But then they actually believed me…so after a while I just stuck to saying, “Nope, wish I did, though!”

  32. I am not a huge fan of green, but as always you make it look beautiful!

  41. Oooh, solid green with denim. What a sweet look! I think I need your styling smarts; I just bought a work shift in this color, but it’s too much when worn with an all-black blazer. Good to see this color work so well!
