Just to be clear, I wore this yesterday. Glad to get that off my chest.

Guess what? I found some trash to stand in front of yesterday. It was time to shake things up here on Kendi Everyday. Piles of trash > beautiful landscapes. If you ever wonder where we find such places, I really don’t know. I think our whole town is 16.9 sq miles (no, no thank YOU wikipedia) so it doesn’t take long to cover just about every cool looking place in town. And today at one of our cool places, we found some stacked trash. A blessing from above.

Yesterday was the first time since I started the 30 for 30 that I actually said “What should I wear today?” Not that I am getting tired of what I have, it’s just starting to get a lot colder than it was when we first started. (Remember outfit one? Those are bare legs, people.) Then I remembered this cowl thing my cousin made for me a few years ago. (The same cousin who gave me that pretty scarf.) I actually forced her to make this for me after sending her a few million skeins of yarn and a note that just said “or else” in cut out magazine letters. She got the message.

Did you like how I labeled it as handmade? I wanted you to think that I made it. I can’t make anything but dinner and that’s arguable at times. Yarn confuses me. As do my hands.

  1. nice backdrop! the trash in nyc is WAY to stinky for me to ever consider posing in front of it, but somehow it works for you. i totally thought you made that scarf at first. i've recently taken up knitting, and i'm teaching myself. it's not that hard once you get the hang of it. after taking two weeks to make a basic tunnel scarf, i broke down and bought myself a loom. SO MUCH FASTER! It took me 3 hours each to make a hat and a tunnel scarf.

  2. Love this outfit and the background 😛

In the process of making a scarf like that… until I stopped into the Gap and found one for $15. Handmade fail.

I like the idea of having someone else just do it, too 🙂

  3. I love this jacket on you ~ it's a perfect fit! I've seen so many of these cowl-thingies and have been on the fence but after seeing how you wore it, I love it. I'm so impressed on your 30 for 30 ~ always something new and unique! 🙂 ~ Susan

  4. Love it! That scarf is awesome, and I can't make anything really either!! I'm kinda forcing my mom to teach me how to use a sewing machine over my two week break from work (I work at a school)…so I'm kind of excited!

    xo,

  5. You look beautiful! I love the handmade scarf thingy! I am learning to crochet via youtube, so far so good. Try it, I am making a scarf thingy or endless scarf I think its called. Love the piles of trash by the way, its a nice contrast!

  6. I think this may be one of my favorites of your 30 for 30! I adore all the layering and the fact that no color is repeated once in your outfit and somehow that looks amazing on you (I'd just look like I'd lost my mind). I adore that cowl! Handmade knits are the best.

  7. That cowl looks so cozy- I've just been wrapping scarfs around my neck as many times as possible and then tucking in the ends to try to keep warm and keep from getting my scarf tangled up in my bike when riding around here in chilly Houston. Oh Texas, you promised me such warmth when I moved here.

  8. I'm loving this. And I didn't do so well planning… Its too cold for most of my 30for30 items. I have having to get really creative in my layering.

  9. I can't wait for the spring 30 for 30. Is there a particular month you'll be focusing on? I'm going to do the challenge in nothing but secondhand finds! Style can be cheap and chic. Love your outfit.

  10. Not many people can pull off trash as an accessory or background! And you look just lovely! 🙂
Great pictures and I love that scarf thing…

  11. Congrats to your cousin for making such a wonderful scarf. Hooray for you finding a cool pic spot. I live in a small town too so I know how you feel.

btw: I love your outfit, you always manage to look so cool. 😉

  12. Is it creepy (sad? No..flattering?) that I look forward to a new outfit post from you every morning at work? Shh…don't tell my boss!
You really tricked me because for a second I assumed that you'd made this scarf and felt completely unaccomplished. Then you revealed the truth and I once again feel okay with the fact that I can't knit.
Another amazing outfit K, I will have to join 30 for 30 with you again in the Spring. Have a great day xoxo

  13. LOVE this outfit and these pictures 🙂

I really love the bright pop of red paired with the mustardy yellows in the outfit – so pretty!!

And today I stood in front of my closet wondering what I was going to wear – because being the first day post-remix challenge, I had no clue what to pull out of my closet!! I was overwhelmed with choices! What has this challenge done to me?? 🙂

  14. Can you cousin make me a cowl scarf too? I'll send her some yarn! 🙂

I've tried making a scarf a few times, I made so many mistakes it had holes in it. Nevertheless, I did not finish. Ha!

Just Better Together is having a giveaway!

  15. ha! i totally want that scarf, was going to ask you to make it, but now i guess i should ask your cousin? does the note in magazine letters really work? (i'll totally supply the yarn :).

  16. The colors in this outfit are amazing!

Whenever I try to do something with yarn it always ends up with mismatched holes in it-so of course I just act as if they were intentional!

  17. I love that scarf and your entire outfit. Such a lucky girl to have a talented cousing like that. And that pile of trash was the best background! No other blogger has that, right?

  18. What an amazing post! I giggled aloud not realizing I hadn't closed my office door … and now my co-workers know that I'm not doing anything from my to do list because my tasks just aren't that funny.

I feel like we'd be friends in real life.

Also, I am curious as to what you're up to since you left your job?

  19. Totally obsessing over the pumpkin color of that cowl. Now I know how to get people to make things for me…totally going to try the intimidation route. 🙂 Also loving the unexpected punch of color in the shoes! And strangely, the backdrop, works really well with the colors in the outfit…who knew trash could be so classy.

  20. This might be one of my fave outfits! (I also think I say that everytime!) Soemthing about the first photo is so gorgeous…makes me feel like you've got secrets to tell!

  21. Most excellent location. I tried to take pics at the local dump once but was caught and advised the dumpsters were a no photo zone *sigh* Copyright on places stinks (as do some dumpsters)

    You look great!

  22. That cowl is so cute. The color looks amazing on you! I'm jealous because I usually can't pull off orange because I have black hair and I look like halloween haha. I'm sure you hear this a billion times a day, but your blog is ADORABLE. Really. I'm putting you on my link list. 🙂

  23. the color of the cowl is beautiful up against your face…and I'll bet those bales of boxes are behind your local Walmart. 🙂

  24. @Taylor we can be best friends, no problem. you like chick flicks right?

Oh and you asked what I've been up to. Can you wait about a month??? I'll tell ya everything!

@Terri — close! it was behind a tractor supply store 🙂

  25. I'll have to find an intimidating way to threaten your cousin into making ME a cowl thing! Ok, that was weird. You don't know me. I promise I'll leave your cousin alone…but EXCELLENT choice of color. And if you ever get tired of it…I'll be around for at least a few more decades 🙂

Also, gotta say, you wear the middle part beautifully.

I'm new at blogging, specifically my very own fashion blog (and decided to let my BF in on the fun, rather than being 'just the photographer'…so I guess it's not really my 'very own'..it's interesting to see the funny unexpected things that end up getting posted when you're sharing your blog) and I always look at yours for inspiration! You're a master at making things that maybe nobody should care about totally cool, and you wear those killer UO red heels enough to make me feel ok with wearing the same pair of boots with eeeeverything (although the 30 for 30 might explain that). So thanks!

Ok, there. If you've made it through that and are now reading this, double thanks.

    🙂 christen

  26. Great outfit! I love that you are able to mix classic with casual so well. I feel like I struggle. That jacket is just too perfect and the cowl… Well, now I have to go make one. Fantastic!

  27. I also adore the cowl, but am glad you can't knit either. There's no way I could, and I totally did look at the handmade sign and assume you made it. But feel so much better that you didn't 🙂

I love this outfit, it'looks so cute with the jacket belted!

  28. "I actually forced her to make this for me after sending her a few million skeins of yarn and a note that just said "or else" in cut out magazine letters. She got the message."

This is hilarious! Keep it coming.

  29. I am in total love with the oranges, yellows and reds in this outfit.

At least you can make dinner every now and then. All I can make is a mess.

  30. You look gorgeous Kendi! I just love that autumn colour palette on you… what a great combo of clothes.

Can you be my stylist? Except that I only have boring neutrals and I'm sporting a pretty big baby bump, but I'm sure with your skills, you could make me look good… 🙂

  31. You look SO pretty here, Kendi! Your hair is looking lovely these days! I love this outfit, too, love anything that pulls off warm AND chic! I also fail big time at knitting. I gave it a fair go, but my hands do not want to cooperate.

  32. hahaha the trash actually looks good!– only you! it actually kinds of looks like luggage.
    super chic garbage

Love your blog– fashion is inspiring!
check out mine, its brand new:

  33. Hahahha! Yarn isn't that complicated, just believe in yourself! I was sent an email with your blogadress, and i really like what i see! The 30 days thing was such a good plan!

    Love Iben

  34. Haha! I was so impressed that you had made it! You got me!

Tomorrow I'm teaching my class how to knit so they can make their families something for Christmas. I totally youtubed the directions last night and now I'm an obviously an expert knitter. If you need any help doing the simple knit stitch (since that's all I know), you know where to go…. (see, now I got you. You thought I was going to say to ask me. You need to youtube it. I'm no expert! 🙂

  35. Waa! This outfit is awesome. And can I just say you and your husband make a great team? My hubs takes most of my blog photos, and he's fantastic for doing it, but your hubs has the skillz to pay the billz (yeah, spelled with z's).

  36. The color of that scarf looks awesome on you! Perfect for brunettes. 🙂

Sometimes "trashy" backgrounds are the best. Somehow my husband and I manage to find the dingiest places to take our photographs. We recently had someone comment on one of our engagement sessions saying that the location came straight out of a Michael Moore film discussing poverty. I don't think she was being positive. How rude. 😉

Anyway, the trash background is totally working for you.

  37. Finding a new background for your photo is so exciting. I,m always looking for new backgroung and set up ideas for my sewn projects, and with winter and the lack of light it's getting even harder to make interesting photos. It's agood thing I only get a project month once every 2 months.

I love this look by the way ! I love how you combine simple pieces and make them work so well together !

  38. Hi Kendi, just wanted to let you know that I dedicated my final 30 for 30 haiku to you today, just like I promised I would (in the comments of the Remixers list when you added me onto the list late). Thanks again for organizing the challenge. I learned alot!

P.S. – Your hair looks good in these photos. Like, really good. Good hair day.

  39. The magazine cut-out letters 'or else'- hahaha YES!! I totally forgot about doing that back in the day. Good call.

The knit tube is awesome – good call.

    Sweet trash.

  40. Your hair looks beautiful today… and I just love this blazer. I've said this before, but thanks for the laugh everyday. I know when I come out to your blog you will say SOMETHING that will make me smile.

  41. Best background ever. It gives a whole new meaning to "One person's trash is another person's treasure," eh?

Love the outfit! The proportions are just fantastic. Alas, I'd freeze to death here in Chicago if I tried such a thing. I'll live through you, instead. Oh, and that scarf- digging it!

  42. I love this outfit, I think you did a great job on the fly… I wish I could knit more than a single strip of scarf like material, I have no idea how to join the two ends together, must be a miracle!

  43. Kendi. I've just discovered your blog via the guest post on PSS. I have now scrolled through at least two dozen posts. You've made me laugh a hell of a lot. And brightened up my procrastination (I'm meant to be revising for Very Important Exams).
    Thank you! xx
