8.18.10bJoann of Sidewalk Chalk wrote an enlightening comment yesterday. She said “I’m really starting to believe that there are no real fashion rules anymore.” Well, Joann — I couldn’t agree more. Mainly because I got this new belt which is black and I want to wear it all the time. And if fashion rules that I can’t mix navy with black, then I’ll just be an outlaw. Yesterday it was black and brown (which we all agreed was ok, right?) and today black and navy. I just can’t help myself — I. love. trouble.

OK and we can all go ahead and just call me a liar. A while back on Formspring, someone asked me what trend doesn’t work for me. And I said maxi dresses. And then I went off on how I can’t wear them because blah, blah, blah. Well lookey here… who is in a maxi dress now? Should I feel ashamed? Because I don’t. I just feel really, really comfortable in all of this soft fabric.

Did you check out that crazy weather behind me? I’m pleased to report that this did not turn into a ‘night of the twisters’ scenario. Only some light rain, just enough to make mud for the dogs to track in. This was the first time that the sky decided to coordinate with my outfit. I like where this is going Mother Nature, very much so. Let’s see what you can do with my plaid shirt tomorrow.

  1. i love the swirling storm behind you! gorgeous!!

gotta say i also did not like maxi dresses and thought they were definitely not my style but now i happen to own 3 of them! ha!

and i also feel that fashion rules are out the window these days! when my mom frowns on my outfit i know i have done well!

  2. I pretty much love this ensemble. So chic. And who says you can't mix navy and black? I've never heard that. Oftentimes prints are navy/black mixes because it is awesome.

I've also always been a 'I can't wear maxi dress because blah blah blah' person. Maybe I'll have to rethink that.

  3. Gorgeous as always Kendi! Your dark outfit just pops against the eerie background, I think you rock the maxi very well indeed!

  4. Your outfit inadvertently matches the gorgeously dark storm! And I essentially agree with Joann– never wear clashing styles, never wear brown with black, never never never… it's all starting to blur with me a bit. I find it almost perversely fun to break "the rules," like I'm being a rebel through my closet. 😀

  5. I love the combo of navy and black! I have a blazer that is navy with black stripes, and I love it! You look beautiful as always! Can't wait to see the plaid!

  6. I love what my grandma used to say about combining black and navy: "You'll look like a bruise!"
I ignored that. I love black and navy together.
Forget rules. The only constructive rules are the ones that force you to be more creative (30 for 30, for example). When rules are just there to restrict your choices, that's when they need to be ignored.
So pair navy and black! Wear red and green together when it isn't Christmastime! If nothing else, you'll illicit some nice reactions in your comments. 😀

  7. i said the same thing about maxi dresses and now, i too am a changed woman. i love how easy they are to just throw on ang go!

  8. I agree the latest fashion seems to be breaking all the fashion rules.

And I love when you have some preconceived notion about what won't work for you but then you find the perfect cut/style of said item and fall in love.

Tis the story of me and skinny jeans.

    You look amazing. 🙂

  9. I remember years ago (like high school mid-90s years ago) reading a fashion column in Details where the navy with black, look like a bruise issue came up. The writer pointed out that lots of uniforms (police and the like) are navy and accessorized with black, and they always look damn snappy. I have to say I agree. And you Kendi … case in point.

  10. I think maxi dresses looks great on you, Kendi! I couldn't agree more, it seems that almost anything goes with fashion these days:) Love it! I seriously need a tank maxi just like urs!

  11. I agree that fashion rules are falling by the wayside, but I must admit that the one I clung to the longest was mixing black and navy; I always felt it looked like I accidentally thought the navy actually was black. When I was younger it would actually pain me to pair the two. Luckily, I've since gotten over it, but I still do feel a little twinge every time I do it.

  12. I went suit shopping with my husband last weekend and was so annoyed because he was all about the "rules". I have no rules when I get dressed! I think black and navy together looks very chic when done intentionally.

  13. been reading for a while, never commented. would just like to say your blog is the one i look forward to during my work week. not only do you dress fabulously, i love your writing. so thank you

  14. Oh dear, I never stick to colour rules either, I thought black and navy worked well!

Anyway, you look amazing. Of course! You look super tall!

  15. Aww, thanks for the little shout out to my comment. You should wear that belt all the time if it makes you happy!

I love how dramatic your photos are in this shoot. Your outfit just pops against the stormy scenery.

  16. Maxi dresses are the ultimate in comfortable clothing. I like em' because you don't have to shave your leg. Oh yes. 😀

  17. cute outfit! i'm realizing that the rules aren't so rigid once I started following fellow style bloggers and saw how the conservative rules can be broken and look good! you just need to have a good eye! (however, there are just some things that will always remain as no no's…lol)

  18. I totally agree. I keep hearing bloggers talk about wearing this pair of white pants or this light-colored top as much as they can now before fall hits and they can't wear them anymore.

Really? No white after Labor Day is something that people still follow?

I say if I can stay warm enough in it for cold weather, it's good. If I can stay cool enough in warm weather, it's good.

    And that's what I think.

  19. I have to say, even though you formerly thought you couldn't wear maxi dresses, I think they look AMAZING on you! I'm an eensy bit jealous (ok, more than an eensy bit) of your height that makes this possible. At 5'2" I just look overwhelmed with all that fabric, but I can't think of a more comfy summer outfit. But you look gorgeous, as usual!

  20. I would say you are one "influential" blogger if even Mother Nature is paying attention to what you're wearing…

  21. Looking cute. I don't think there are really fashion rules, just things that work on some people and not on others! Easy as that. For me I hate peachy, nude tones as they wash me out coz Im already pale. Its all a matter of opinion and taste really. Daisy Dayz Home

  22. I always felt the same way about Maxi dresses but maybe it is time for me to try them out and see if they work on me.
You look lovely on this dress BTW.

  23. So I never liked maxi dresses. I saw the top picture and thought how wonderful it looked and then thought how I should give it a try sometime. I read down to see that you never liked them before either. Perhaps you just found a good one. I wish I was that lucky.

In the pictures, I can't really tell the belt is black.

  24. I think black and navy is such a chic, classic combo. Love it! I would also like to borrow a few inches? Just a few, ok? At 5'3 I feel like I look like a mini version of me in a maxi dress. But you rock it!!
