7.15.10gThat’s supposed to be a number 9. I didn’t realize how bad I was at holding up numbers with my hands until we started photographing them. I’m not sure if my thumbs are completely opposable, especially now after studying the above photo for a few hours. Neat.
Apparently I was over-dressed for work today. This normally is no surprise but today I got the “up-and-down’s”– you know, the look up, the look down, then the exasperated eye roll. I guess no one else got the memo of “wear your favorite dress from Loft” day. Well I did and I conquered that memo. But to tone down the awesomeness of my dress, I threw on an oversize jacket of a co-worker and wiped that annoying smile off my face. There that’s better.

In all honesty, I think that I would rather be over-dressed than under-dressed in most situations. Sure, people stare at me strangely when I show up to the gym in my sequin covered velour sweatsuit, but no one said being flashy is easy.
In other news, I keep chopping away at my bangs. Before you know it, they will look like this. But hey, it’ll grow back, right?

  1. We just had "Dress Down" week at work last week, but I am still so excited about work clothes & being an adult — it's my first job 🙂 — that I wore a skirt anyway. My boss asked if I was trying to show everybody else up haha.

  2. Oh I know exactly what you mean! I used to work for the state of Illinois, and when I would show up in dresses (or even skirts!) people would look at me and say "Why are you always so dressed up?" Lol, I'd usually just stare at them blankly and say "I'm dressed up?"

That yellow looks beautiful with your dark hair! I'm always jealous of people with darker hair-you can pull it off like no one's business!

  3. I love that dress on you! I definitely agree with wanting to be overdressed for situations. I'd feel self-conscious if I were totally casual.

Your bangs are adorable and chic. You did a great job.

  4. i love your style.
    i love your outfit.
    i love your blog!

i always look forward to reading your amazing blog every evening, one of my highlights for the day.

yellow looks amazing on you by the way.

  5. I have a childhood picture of when I decided to chop away at my own bangs.. it's pretty bad.

I love the outfit though! I agree with you. I'd rather be overdressed than under dressed.

  6. I wore a dress & heels to the grocery store in central Ohio today and people looked at me like I was an alien.

Oh, and I chop into my bangs randomly all the time. I've come out looking like Spock a few times, probably because I usually start trimming after two glasses of wine…

  7. The bangs picture made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. On a brighter note, your outfit is down right adorable. Tell your homely coworkers to stuff it.

  8. Love this dress! I almost tried it on at LOFT, but decided against it because I didn't think it would be a good color for me. But it looks so good on you that I might rethink that! (That's logical reasoning, right?)

And PS I'd much rather be overdressed as well. I would just feel…unprepared?…if I were the least dressed up person in the room.

  9. I feel "overdressed" sometimes, too, even when I think I look pretty casual. Guess that's what happens when you live in a hot and humid college town where you're lucky to see kids with shirts on.

I love your dress. Yellow is becoming one of my favorite colors.

  10. I always feel over-dressed at university. But then I get approving looks from a fellow student who is well dressed and feel alll better!

I love that colour, it is gorgeous on you!

  11. I agree: I think it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. We have casual Fridays at work, which I think means "I don't have to wear dress pants" but some people seem to think "I can wear PJs," so I get the "Why are you dressed up?" a lot, too. We're at work, people(!), not going to an 8AM Bio Lab, okay??

I love your dress, and you look lovely in it!

  12. Hey, don't let the haters discourage you from being fabulously well-dressed! I sometimes get looked up and down, too (so rude!), and I try really hard not to be self-conscious about it, but sometimes I tone down my look a bit when that happens. But we shouldn't have to do that just so that others will feel more comfortable! Just keep looking cute, and I'll try to do the same.

Oh, and what a lovely backdrop for your pictures today!

  13. I love this color on you! Your coworkers sound annoying. Seriously, a dress to work is overdressed? It's not floor length or made of taffeta!

  14. A mustard yellow dress with a collar like that and a navy striped belt with leather detail sounds JUST like the right outfit to wear to work!

  15. I was really scared the bang link was going to be to a picture of me, as I keep doing the same thing. Seriously though. It's an addiction. I can't stop.

That dress is fantastic. End of story.

  16. I can't believe how many fabulous backgrounds you get to photo in every single day! Gorgeous gorgeous dres Kendi! I must check out the Loft soon. I get the dressed up comment a lot. I find trading my heels for my under-the-desk Crocs tones down the look and I get more questions on where'd you get those on Crocs than heels any day. LOL what can you do?

  17. Gosh I'm afraid to imagine what your work mates must wear if this is considered over dressing.
I think you look fantastic and if we worked together I'd be totally jealous but inspired at the same time.

  18. I love the color of that dress. I've seen it at LOFT and have always liked it but for some reason never tried it on. You look great in it and make me wish that I'd tried it!

  19. That dress is awesome 🙂
The people at your work probably look you up and down because they are envious of how fabulous you look all the time!

  20. Well I think the belt makes the dress look perfectly casual, great accessorizing!

I bet it's real prickly to do Pilates in sequins though…
    🙂

  21. i love your sense of style and, even more, your pictures. kudos to your husband.

  22. Any event I attend I would much rather be the best dressed person than the shabbiest.

Looking well put together works for any dress code.

  23. I would ABSOLUTELY rather be overdressed than under. There's nothing wrong with being the best dressed person in the room.

    You look great!

  24. This is a great outfit… I can't imagine it being considered "over-dressed" – but there you have it… this is America I suppose, where track suits (and not the sequined kind) and laziness reign supreme. You look great!

  25. The picture of the horrible bangs made me bust up laughing that I actually snorted, loudly!! Please stop chopping your bangs, we can't have you look like that, cute outfit or no cute outfit!! Love the yellow dress!! Definitely overdressed rather than underdressed!!

  26. Totally agree. That's the one piece of advice my Granny ever gave me… you can always dress down and outfit if you arrive somewhere and find you're overdressed – but you can never dress it up! (ps that dress is adorable)

  27. I'm ALWAYS overdressed for work. I work in social work… we do adoptions for kids in foster care and all the other social workers wear awful sweats everyday. Sometimes there are actual holes in their clothes!! I'm known as the girl who dresses up. I'm totally ok with that. Better than being "girl who looks like a bum" like everyone else. Also, Somehow I feel like I'm being a good example to the kids. Someday maybe they'll grow up to be a well-dressed presentable person… instead of a hobo.

  28. your coworkers are probably obscenely jealous because you look prettier than them and put an effort into your wardrobe! i agree that it's better to be overdressed, than under. you never know what could happen!

  29. i love this post! first off i love the outfit!! especially the belt with that colored dress!! and secondly i love the name!! just last night i was tormenting my co workers (and everyone else in the store) by playing love potion #9 (it's a good song!) over and over haha what a coincidence that i come home and see this in my google reader!

  30. I get those looks at school all the time! It's worth it, though. We shouldn't sacrifice our personal style to fit in with the masses. Keep the awesome outfits up!

  31. I LOVE YOUR YELLOW DRESS! Although I think I love the idea of a sequined velour sweatsuit more. As long as it also has "JUICY" written across the butt. My first funny imagining of the day is complete.

  32. Now I feel better that someone else chops at their bangs just like I do! Really I have a serious problem. In other news, the color of the dress is fantastic, oh and so are you.

  33. Love the shoulder detail of your dress.

If your office is anything like mine, I wouldn't recommend copying your colleagues typical looks. I say Yay for "overdressing". I don't hold with keeping things for "best".

  34. what kind of job do you have? i always picture you walking around the office from the "office" and everybody is wearing mom jeans and plaid button downs with white sneakers. and there you are in a cutesy little loft dress with skyhigh heels. haha!

  35. i'm in love with the old navy belt. please tell me you got it recently, so i can get one too!

  36. Here in Iowa, when I wear dresses to work, I'm slowly getting used to the weird looks I get. I think fashion almost intimidates some women, seems to me, even though that's not my intent. There is nothing wrong with looking cute, that's what I say! 🙂
