I bought this plaid top last fall when I was desperate for anything new. After wearing the same maternity clothes over and over, I just wanted something pretty to fit. We took a quick trip to Austin and I found this at the Free People store. And then… I kind of forgot about it. I wasn’t quite sure how to wear it and I ended up just tucking it away. Seems kind of silly, but this past weekend I pulled everything out of my closet and re-organized and realized my love for this top. What was I doing hiding it away?? It’s the prettiest pastel plaid and I love the high neckline. Maybe I was ahead of my time buying this top months ago, so I tip my hat at my past self for knowing exactly what I wanted to wear this season. The good news for you is that now it’s on sale at Free People! You can find this fabulous top on sale here.

I paired this top with my leather moto jacket (similar), another item in my closet that isn’t being used to it’s fullest potential. I splurged on this leather moto a few years ago knowing it would be a great staple in my winter wardrobe. I think the reason I haven’t worn it very often is that before I felt really tough in it. Like Tori from Saved By The Bell tough. Like I give noogies instead of hugs tough. (Shout out to spell check for accepting the word ‘noogies.’) But after I’ve worn in this jacket over the years, the tough look of this black leather jacket has softened to me. Plus pairing it with soft pinks and purples makes the look even sweeter. (Also am I safe to assume you still get Save By The Bell references? We were all 90s kids right?! God bless the 90s and their weird TV shows for making me who I am today.)

Probably the closest to this jacket is this Madewell Washed Leather Moto, which is already worn in for you. No need to wear it for years to get that right feeling, it’s already done.Since this jacket is a few years old, I’ve found a few perfect ones that are available now! (I linked real and faux leather options!)

Lesson learned: add a little pastel plaid to soften a moto jacket. Saved by the plaid. (I had to, okay?)

Fit Details

In true Free People style, this top runs oversized. Size down for a truer fit. If you want it flowy, just stay true to size! That’s what I did I’m in the medium because I like the room and length 😉

  1. I just found a faux black Moto jacket from BlankNYC (at TJMaxx!)— wasn’t sure if its age appropriate (48) — but seeing how you style it is so helpful. Keeping it!! Thank you Kendi.
