The other day I was being interviewed for an article about personal style and the lady asked ‘what’s your formula?’ which completely stumped me. ‘Formula?’ I asked for clarity. ‘You know, what do you run to when you need to get dressed quickly.’ In the 15 seconds I had to think about it, I think I said boyfriend jeans, cute top, heels. But when I really think about it, I think it’s a dress and a denim jacket.

In fact, this is one of those outfits. All the elements of me feeling put together are here. I also kind of feel like my denim jacket is kind of a security blanket — I feel quite lost without it. We are currently stranded (in the lowest form of the word) at my in-laws this week. We came for a quick trip over the weekend and ended up having car trouble that seemingly will not end. This is day 4 and I’m running out out clothes. Luckily we shot a few extra outfits before we left and I’m an over-packer so for once it actually came in handy. Although, I might have to declare state of emergency on day 5 and hit up a Target or something. Things are getting desperate around here.

  1. Target sounds like a good way to overcome the emergency! PS, I was just there and our store was marking down some of the summery stuff already. Not to encourage you, or anything. 😉 Love those sandals most!

  2. This is DEFINITELY my formula…though lately it’s skirt and chambray shirt knotted in front because – dang – southeast Texas is a miserably hot and humid place. But yes. I refuse to wear jeans in the summertime here. Misery.

  3. My no-rainer outfit is always a dress and flats… You don’t have to think about matching when wearing a dress

  4. Your state of emergency outfit is pretty darn cute. 🙂 Love it! Hope everything gets resolved quickly and that you guys get back home safe and sound!

  5. I have a shirt/jacket that I go everywhere with too…it is ridiculous how many times I wear it, but I guess that’s the point of a go-to. Love this outfit 🙂
Hope your car troubles sort out soon!

  6. This is 100% my “formula” too – easy dress, denim jacket, non-fussy shoes and my gold watch. This is what I’m wearing MOST of the time. If it weren’t for the blog and needing to switch things up a little more, I would be wearing this ALL of the time. 😉

  7. Yes! I always knew being an overpacker would someday come in handy. Until then, I’m getting some great strength training in from lugging my giant luggage around.

  8. This everyday look is perfect, I LOVE that the heel is so tiny so you can last all day! xx

  9. I like the way you think! Why do some laundry at the in-laws’ for Day 5 when there’s always a Target nearby? Lol

    1. Bahaha did you know that my MIL said that? She was like — we have a washing machine…I was like ‘don’t ruin my trip to Target with logic like that…’

  18. I love the oversized look of that Madewell dress. I think everyone has some sort of formula — mine is dress, tights, sweater, oxfords. I find that I look odd in denim jackets and they are one of the “staples” I can’t seem to get behind, for myself.

  23. Is it weird that I kind of associate you with really classy leopard print? I have an old photo pinned of you wearing a leopard print pencil skirt and for me it’s so iconic of you. I used to think leopard print was so trashy, but you just make it look so upscale.

  28. I love that actually. A classy Peg Bundee. I know exactly which skirt you are talking about. I think my mom has it now 🙂

  31. I have to agree with you Kendi. A dress, sandals and a jean jacket. I adore summer time, especially in NYC.
