I realized something over the weekend: I may like floral patterns or flowy pieces but I am no flower child. I watched in amazement at all of the women this weekend who effortlessly pulled off boho chic and festival style. There was so much style in one small concentrated area I felt as if I was inside of a living magazine. It was almost as if they all called each other to confirm this year’s trends. I congratulate every women who can effortless pull of that type of style. I think that’s the key with boho style — it has to look effortless. When I don’t feel 100% with a style or an outfit, I can feel the effort I keep putting into to make an outfit work. By the end of getting dressed, it just looks like effort and I’m not sure that boho is the style that you want to look forced.

All that to say, I’ve also realized that in the sea of style labels I’m actually quite happy to blur most lines. I have no idea what you would even call this style today but I like to call it happy. How can you not be happy when you are wearing a skirt with a million colored flowers?
Oh! One more thing: I met and creeped out a celebrity this weekend. How could I forget that? I met Ashley Madekwe from Revenge and this was the first and only thing I said to her:
“Oh my God — I loved you in Revenge! You were such a b-word in that show.”
END QUOTE.
Needless to say, we are now best friends and she loves my personality, cool girl vibe and fine communication skills.

  1. Okay, I literally just finished reading the interview with Ashley Madekwe in Glamour, and then I read this. That level of coincidence is almost scary!

I agree, there's nothing worse than walking around feeling like you are trying too hard. But when you're 100% comfortable in something, it totally shows! Could you call it preppy boho? Whatever you call it, it's beautiful!

  2. can you do a tutorial on how you do your hair? I just recently cut my hair and i'm having hard time doing that while "i just woke up and my hair looks like this" curl like you have. thanks! 🙂

  3. I can relate completely. I love flowey, effortless, hippie style, but on me it just looks sloppy & weird. I thought it was my age! Its nice to hear that you (young & cute) have similar thoughts. Though, this look is very cute on you!

  4. That skirt is to die for!!! I love how the title of this post and the write up are contrasting too!!! Ha!

  7. I really miss your style/site layout from 2011/2012. Your current style and hair are just not working for you, Kendi. You can do so much better than that. And no, these floral maxi skirts are NOT flattering for you at all.

  8. Hi Kendi, It was touch and go there for a few days, but I ended up really enjoying and learning from your 30 for 30 remix challenge. I can't believe today's already my last day! You inspire me to change up my regular MO and come out of my style safety shell. Stripes and florals here I come! True thanks and props to you, Mix Master, Kendi.

  9. Festival style has completely changed my view on summer clothing. I just love the florals, crazy accessories and over vibe you get with dressing for this type of occasion.

Loving the skirt, but then again, can you really go wrong with florals and a denim jacket?

  12. Beautiful and fresh! That is so great that you and Ashley are BFFs now. I am working on it with Madeleine Stowe, but this restraining order ain't lifting itself.

  13. Hey Kendi! That look is so beautiful and I must say I love it when people pull of the clothes they love to wear, or blur the lines like you do, it makes it more interesting to look at and wonder about and it's just wonderful! Have an amazing day!

  14. Very pretty skirt.I have yet to purchase something floral. I'm so afraid of ending up looking like a couch.

  17. I feel you on the boho style/effortless thing… it's not as easy as it looks and I can't seem to get it right either. But you look great here as always!

  18. Ha! You met Ashley and probably said something as awkward as I would.

My brother met one of his favorite musicians when we were in high school. After realizing that the guy he was quietly making fun of was, in fact, his idol and not just some dude in a plaid shirt, he said in a squeaky voice (like he was going through puberty all over again), "Hey, you're Aaron Sprinkle! You're awesome, man!"

    So, nice work, Kendi. 🙂
