A girlfriend of mine texted me this the other night: “Are overalls back in style???” The three question marks gave her tone away; disbelief mixed with a side of delight and terror. I get this reaction because I had the same feelings last spring when grown ladies in overalls and heels started showing up on my Pinterest feed. But, after thinking about this trend for 6 months too long, I have to say that I’m extremely pleased with this comeback trend.

from the top, l to r: 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06

As an overalls connoisseur of the late 90s, this is a trend I can get into (literally — two feet at a time.) Unfortunately I’m about a foot taller than I was the last time I wore these one-piecers. I will be trying this trend again this spring with the caveat of finding the extra-tall version. There is nothing worse than a tall girl in a too short one-piece; things happen that I just can’t explain here on the internet.
Pros of overalls coming back in style: fun to wear, one less piece of an outfit you have to worry about, you can easily be a farmer in those clothes

Cons: going to the bathroom, looking like an adult toddler
Well, that settles it. Overalls are in for me. What are your thoughts on overalls back in style? Yay, cray or may(be)?

  1. This takes me back to middle school when I wore my denim short overalls nearly every day. Oh the shame.

  2. I am so happy overalls have made a comeback – perfect for outfitting music festivals this summer! Now I just need to find the right pair…

  3. Haha! I literally read that Clueless line in Amber’s voice before I even realized it! 🙂 I think I’m definitely going to try this If I too can find some made for us tall girls. Cant wait to see what you do with a pair of overalls!

  4. I would have to see the overalls styled very well (by you, of course), to even consider buying a pair!! Not a big fan, but we’ll see! 🙂

  5. I had a pair in the 90s but I don’t think I’m going to try it this time. I think a stylish person can pull it off but I’m pretty classic, AND 15 years older. I don’t think it would be a good idea for me. 🙂

  6. I don’t think I could rock them like I could in the 90’s. Where am I wearing them? Certainly not in any professional capacity. Definitely not to dinner. Completely impractical for a concert or music fest (who wants to strip half naked in a port-o-pottie?) I’m just not sold.

  7. I wish I could rock them again..but I feel like you need to have the smaller chest to truly pull off this modern version? I feel like they’d fall weird on me!

  8. HELL NO! They were horrible in 9th grade and even more horrible now. Sometimes the fashion people don’t know when to let something stay dead.

  9. Jury is out on the overall issue, but apparently Birkenstocks are making a comeback as per the latest Nordstrom catalog. It seems nineties fashion is having a revival…really it just makes me feel old. All I ask is that someone please let me know when it’s ok to rock knee socks, a beret, and pleated plaid a la Cher Horowitz again!

  10. I wore overalls too in the nineties but definitely won’t be now. They are so unflattering on everyone it doesn’t matter what type of body you have they are shapeless. Just because something is a trend doesn’t mean it always works.

  11. Nope. I live in a part of the US where overalls will always be only for overweight farmers in my book. 🙂

  12. I think I will probably not be getting on this bandwagon. Too many osh kosh b’gosh memories from childhood. Pass! 🙂

  13. The new ones on the market are not baggy, which makes the person wearing it a bit more put together (especially paired with polished shoes).
However, I personally don’t care for overalls. Personal preference.

  14. What a coincidence! I was thinking about overalls yesterday because I have one in my wardrobes that I don’t use in a long time… I use to say.. theres no ugly look, there’s look unfashionable.

  18. Ah, I have such mixed feelings on this! Blair and Jules above look absolutely KILLER – I love the look on them! But they are among a small group of women who just seem to pull everything off flawlessly… and I’m not sure how overalls would work on the general population. I’m definitely not ruling them out, I might even try them on, but I think I’ll end up feeling silly – like you said, an adult toddler. Time will tell! (But I sure did rock them in grade 7!)

  19. I think this trend is okay, but not for me. Interestingly though, I never
wore overalls growing up and I really wanted to but now no. Lol at "going to the bathroom, looking like an adult toddler".

  20. I'm a little obsessed with the overalls trend, though unsure if it will work for a fat-bottomed girl like myself… TRYING IT ANYWAY KTHXBYE.

  26. Oh my! Aside from the short ones, I think they’re a must miss. Unflattering and very childish! I wore them when I was 10, not sure I can go back to my pre teen style!

  30. I love that overalls are back. I actually didn’t realize how much some people hate them though. Some of your other readers seem really passionate about how overalls are just horrible. Who knows, maybe it’s because I’m from Texas too, I like em. Especially worn with simple pieces. My two favorites are Jules and Katrina.

  36. NO, no, no….no, noooooooo!!!!!

although I thoroughly enjoyed them the first time around, 98% of the women who are going to try and wear the Overall’s trend this time are NOT going to look remotely as “chic” as some of those models above…AND, being that the comfort level of overalls is WAY HIGH, I fear that the women who choose them will be those who rate comfort AS their Numero Uno in fashion, and therefore, will not consider their body type/age/stage of life…

I just don’t think they deserve a second go-round….there’s a reason Farmers wear them, so unless you plan on planting and harvesting, stay away 😛

  37. Definitely looks better on other people than on me. This is a no in my book.

  38. I used to wear overalls nonstop when I was younger, but now Im too timid to even try. But I have more legs than torso now and it's all a bit awkward in the fitting. Also, I'm hosting an Estée Lauder give-away on my blog and I would love for you and your readers to enter! x

  39. I think that overalls coming back into fashion are one of those things where just because it’s “fashionable” now, doesn’t mean that everyone should necessarily follow it or wear it. For the workplace, I think it would be really hard to pull off overalls, unless they were black jean – but even then, in a professional real-life sense, I think you’d be pushing a clothing professional limit. It’s also very hard to take someone in their 30s seriously, wearing a pair of these. I think if you want to wear them around your house? Sure. But just the fact that they are a pain in the ass to take off and on for going to the restroom? What a nuisance for nothing.

  40. I saw this pop up and it was such good timing, considering the fact that I picked up a pair on sale about two weeks ago. Right after that, one of the moms at the school the kids I look after go to showed up wearing a killer pair that she wore to perfection. While it seems most people here are against it, definitely excited about this coming around again. So much fun! 🙂

  43. As an adult, where do you wear overalls? I am not against the idea, and LOVED them when I was younger, I just can’t think of where I would wear them to now. I don’t think I could pull them off at my office. Need some ideas of where to wear them!!

  47. I think the shorts ones can look cute as a vacation look – beach or woodsy or Cape Cod-y. Not sure about the day-to-day look, and I’m not liking the full length ones at all.

  49. Kendi, I was also a wearer of overalls the first and second times around – first in grade 6/7 when the cool thing to do was to wear only one strap, and again in early university. I just don’t know if I can do it again. I’m short but have a really long torso and I understand the evils of one-piece anythings (overalls, rompers, full bathing suits). Power to you if you if you end up getting them, I’m sure you’ll pull them off well, but I’ll be sitting this trend out this time around!! XO

  51. Overalls. I love the idea, and the looks I’ve seen so far. That being said, I’m not so sure I could personally pull them off. Maybe I’ll try on a pair and surprise myself! In any case, I’m excited to see you rock the look, Kendi!

  53. This so brings me back to when I was in University.I literally wore my overalls until I had holes in them. It’s so true what they say, keep your clothes because they do come back in style, maybe a different version, but it does come back.

Not sure if I’m going to jump onto that style band wagon though.

    Agi:)

  55. Don’t forget running the danger of sitting down in the bathroom only to realize you’ve got to change out of your overalls because the strap went into the toilet! Hopefully I wouldn’t make that mistake like I did in 4th grade.

  57. I think the darker, slimmer versions – like Blair’s – paired with chic, streamlined accessories help keep it out of adult toddler territory. But as someone said before, it’s a slippery slope with the general population… Not everyone can make something as tough as overalls look good. That said, if I found the right pair (suitable for the six-foot set), I might muster up the courage to give it a shot. Fashion is always a risk, so why not have a little fun with it?

  59. I just bought a pair from Zara and have been dreaming up all the ways to wear them. You may want to try them, I’m a tall girl and they fit pretty perfectly.
