On April 30th, we are closing our beloved store front, bloom.

I sure do know how to open a blog post, don’t I?

I have tried to write this post over and over, as eloquently as possible, but this is a post that is just slightly surreal to write. I tried to poetically put together a post that told the story in full but without that first piece of the puzzle, the fact that our store front will be closing, it just didn’t flow. So now you know the ending, here is the beginning:

We learned last December that our building was going to be up for sale. We operate bloom online on the second level and our retail front on the first level. We were saddened by this news but only because we loved our landlord so much. He had become a friend in the process and a mentor. (He’s a kind man who believed in two young people who had no previous experience, little capital and just a plan. That says a lot about a landlord, trust me.) But other than losing our sweet landlord, we didn’t think much else of the news. We went on with December by celebrating the holidays and looked forward to make 2014, and our third year in business, the best year yet.

In January, we learned that not only was our building definitely selling but the prospective owners wanted to move fast. The catch was that they would buy the building for their own use. In other words, we would no longer be able to rent the space we have come to know and love as our first venture into retail. And with that everything changed.

B and I have gone through just about every option you can imagine. We explored most of them to the point of exhaustion. When life gives you lemons, you add vodka, sugar, take a swig and get to work, right? So we went into this as a willing change; something we could not control but we would make the best of it. Lemons to lemonade, we kept saying. B and I both agreed that the sale of the building was actually a good thing; we had talked of change but talk is just talk until you do something about it. Now we had no choice but to put words into action. Pumped at the possibility of bigger and better, we began to explore our options. We decided it best to stay in McKinney, as we love our local customers and we love our little town. We looked for other places to rent around the square and the few options that we explored never turned out right for us. (Just to give you a quick overview, bloom is located on a historic town square in Mckinney, Texas. It is an adorable, should be on a movie set kind of perfect town square and because of this, it is also 98% full with other businesses.) Therefore finding a space that a) we could afford and b) that fit our business model was becoming a reality that neither one of us saw coming. The reality was that what we wanted, needed and could afford just wasn’t available.

Many days ended and many sleepless nights began as we thought / fretted / worried about our business’ future. Why was every door shutting hard in our face? Why were there not MORE doors opening? I won’t lie and say that I didn’t think ‘why is this happening? We were just getting the hang of this! We were growing every single month!’ Every day these questions begged me for an answer. And as a business owner, I had no choice but to look for every solution possible, even if none of them were the right ones.

One day while fretting over everything I remembered this quote from Oprah (of course), and it just kept finding it’s way back into my head:

“For years I’ve noticed that the universe speaks to us in whispers. If we ignore the whispers, we get pebbles of warnings. If we still don’t pay attention, we get bricks of problems, and if we’re really hardheaded, eventually the entire brick wall comes crashing down…I know for sure when you don’t pay attention to the pebbles, it’s just a matter of time before the bricks show up…”

I finally realized that every door closing was actually God whispering little hints to me. We stepped back once again and looked at our situation for what it really was: we were about to become a store without a store front. Our options to stay in downtown McKinney were limited at best. We were two very tired people who had given a lot of themselves, their marriage, their time and money to make a business successfully work and grow over the last three years. And now we had hit that proverbial brick wall.

After a good and long ugly cry and a bottle of wine or two, we started to look at our lack of options as an abundance of opportunities. I will continue to believe that there is always, always, always a way — but it may not be exactly what you were looking for. Once we realized that the option of closing the store was real and right, that’s when a small door opened up. Immediately we started seeing other possibilities of what we could do and not what we couldn’t do any longer. We, of course, have our online store, we could travel and have pop-up shops, we could move houses, cities, states, we could go on a vacation every once in a while, have full weekends again. We realized that although a lot is happening right now (and seriously every day is a new twist in the plot it seems) we do not have to fold. We just have to find a new way.

So right now, I’ll be honest a lot is up in the air. (Well besides naps, vacation, weekends. Those are definitely on the shortlist.) And I won’t lie and say that this has been an easy decision. It’s hard when you begin something, like a business, to then imagine the end of it. But I don’t think this is the end for bloom. Maybe it’s just the beginning. Either way the truth is that this is life. Uncontrollable, crazy, and unexpected, but every day I wake up with a peace knowing that this is the right thing to do.

Perhaps this is an opportunity that we wanted all along. We’ve been wanting to grow bloom and make changes, but we just weren’t sure how to move forward. Truth be told, we still aren’t sure how to move forward. I guess that’s the beauty in all of this. We don’t have to know right now. So for now we are moving forward with the certainty of complete uncertainty. It’s actually quite thrilling not knowing our next move. We have a whole world of possibility, something we’ve forgotten to look for when it looked like all opportunity was closing it’s doors on us. Instead it’s the complete opposite: when opportunities looks like failure, that just means you aren’t seeing all of the possibilities.

So back to the beginning: We are closing our store front on May 10th. We are not closing our online shop, but we will slow things down so that we can re-evaluate what we really want bloom to become. If you are in the area between now and April 30th, we will be having major sales in-store (winky face) and a “going away for now” party on April 5th that will indeed have spiked lemonade. We want this to be a celebration of (almost!) 3 lovely years and a send off to what is coming next.

The other side of the coin is that I live my life in a visible medium called the internet. What I’ve always loved about the internet is the idea of positivity, that you-can-do-anything attitude, the constant source of life and inspiration. I’ve racked my brain to find a solution that doesn’t include closing our store front so that you too will feel inspired to keep going with your dream, if you’ve ever found inspiration through my own. But like I said, the other side of the internet is real life. Sometimes you can’t control everything; and choices you have to make don’t make sense just yet. This is one of those times. I always want a plan to forge ahead with but I’m standing in front of you guys saying I have no plan. But I promise to keep you updated when I do find that plan, even if I have to try out a few until I find the right one.

Thank you for your love and support since the beginning of bloom. It’s been the best experience I could have ever asked for and I can’t wait to see where we go next.

(Also, congrats on making it to the end of this post. It was a long one. Thanks for sticking it out.)

  1. What a hard decision!!!! Will be thinking of you and the long road ahead – I think keeping your online store is definitely a good decision (and for my closet as well) but the fear of the unknown is stressful. Keep us updated – we love you….and Bloom!

  2. I love your positive outlook and your determination to see the opportunities that will come from this. I look forward to seeing where the next steps will take you and hope that the next adventure is even greater than the last. Good luck! I still plan on keeping an eye on your online storefront as well 🙂

  3. I’m sorry, Kendi. I know the loss of the store, into which you poured so much of your souls and your hard work, is so disappointing. But we’ll still be here to encourage you. I know something will come along, and it will probably be even better. Good luck to you!

  4. Wow, your attitude is amazing, Kendi!! Good luck to you and B with everything!! (P.S. here in Philly fashion trucks are a thing — maybe something to look into one day?)

  5. Well that makes it official — I’ve been dying to drive up to McKinney and visit your shop, and now it MUST happen. Been a huge fan since the beginning of the blog, and I know whatever you do in the future will be amazing! Continue to trust and walk in faith, y’all will get there 🙂

    1. Yes! You should definitely come up 🙂 I will be there this weekend and next weekend but will be out of town the following two 🙂 Just as a heads up! But I’d love to say hi when you come in.

  6. Kendi, I have a little pit of anxiety in my tummy reading this post, because the flower shop’s building is also for sale and it’s always hanging in the back of my mind that we may come into work tomorrow and our landlord will say we have to go. I can only imagine how difficult this decision was for you and Bryan. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter. You can always move to Florida and be a florist with me 😉

    1. Keira: oh no on the floral shop building being up for sale BUT asking around this is not typical. Even our landlord who sold the building was surprised that they wanted to use the building instead of just owning it. Seriously, I wouldn’t worry. But keep me updated!

  7. oh kendi, my heart breaks for you! this post made me tear up a little bit. your blog is one of my favorites, because you are so real, and honest, and true to yourself, and this post is no different. i have no doubt that you will land on your feet, wherever that landing may be. i hate to use this phrase, but when one door closes (in your case, literally), another door opens. no one can know what lies ahead for you, but if your past and your perseverance and your overall awesomeness is any indication, what comes next will be glorious and wonderful.

    1. Your comment made ME tear up! I’ve definitely had a few weeks to process this and the decision came slowly so I really am okay 🙂 I agree on the one door closes and another one opens wholeheartedly. I have the weirdest mix of excited and sadness, it’s a weird place to be in my head these days! But overall I am excited to see what is next, we just have to get through the closing part, that’s the hard part! Thanks for your love and concern, means a lot 🙂

  8. Super sad that I never had the chance to make it to the shop, but after reading this whole post, I feel the tiniest bit of hope that a pop-up shop tour would bring you to Seattle, and it would be the best thing ever. Best of luck and can’t wait to hear what this opportunity turns into for both of you!

  9. What a tough choice to make and a tough post to write I’m sure. But you’re right, there are so many doors that open when one closes and now the possibilities are endless for you two. Sometimes that uncertainty is just what we need, it’s what keeps us alive!

  10. Love you, Kendi! So proud of you for seeing the opportunities in this. Take your time and re-evaluate your business and your life. It will be so worth it, and you’ll love yourself and your business more in the end! Praying for you!

  11. Hugs Kendi I can imagine that it’s been very tough for you. You are right about how life shows you the way you are meant to go. 10 years ago I started buying the franchise rights to a wedding store. I had a business plan and a loan from the bank, a supportive husband and lots of enthusiasm, all I needed was premises that the company would approve of. Everywhere we looked, in our town, in towns around the area, just did not get the approval of the company. It was frustrating to say the least. The one thing I had wanted to do, owning my own shop, was slipping away. I was crushed. Then my husband and I began talking about the future, what we wanted, could I start a venture from scratch? It just didn’t seem possible. But giving up that dream made me see that we were missing one vital thing from our lives. Almost 9 years later I have a gorgeous, happy, thoroughly entertaining son. By having him I was still able to dip my toe into running my own business. It didn’t last but at least I could say I had tried. I have continued to focus on him, I work part time so that I keep my toe in the working world and perhaps one day in the not too distant future my dream of owning a shop may become a reality. But if I had known all those years ago how happy I would be with this drastically different life I would have laughed you out of the would be stores! Good luck with whatever direction you take Bloom.

  12. “Good things fall apart so better things can come together.” 🙂

Best of luck to you & B. Can’t wait to see what exciting opportunities unfold for you guys!

  13. As I’m sure this was a hard post to write, and a difficult journey through out the past 3 years of dedication to your store, it’s so great to see your positive attitude still shining. I wish you and your husband all the best as you seek out where to go next with bloom.

  14. You should start a Kickstarter campaign for a new storefront! It would at least get the word out about you guys! Good luck!

  15. awww sorry to hear that, but it’s great you will still have your online shop!! and you are right, i think an opportunity will come, u just have to figure out which one is best for u!

  16. Sad but it sounds like you have the best attitude towards it all. I am excited to see what comes of all this!

  17. This is inspiring! Your attitude, your perseverance, your success! Ill be praying for you two. Things will work out! ♥ Thanks for sharing.

  18. I’m sorry to hear that! McKinney has a great Downtown and it will miss your store. You have a great attitude and I can’t wait to see what vodka lemonade you come up with.

  19. I’m sad about your situation, but I really admire your attitude. This is definitely the rough change, but I believe that with your work ethic and creativity that you will come up with an awesome plan that will make Bloom even better than it already is. In the meantime, enjoy your downtime and try not to worry. A good, relaxing vacation may clear you mind and give you the jump start you need to find the best solution.

Your blog has quickly become one of my favorites not just because of the clothes but because your personality and passion for what you do is energizing and inspiring. If McKinney wasn’t a 4 hour drive, I’d be on my way right now ha. Best wishes to you both! I look forward to seeing the future of Bloom 🙂

  20. Good for you and B, Kendi. You have been very inspirational to me–not just as a fashion icon (yep, I went there), but also with your openness about depression and as an entrepreneur. I am sure that with your individual and coupled strength that you and your husband will find a way to make it all work. That quote from Oprah is perfect and with how busy it sounds like you both have been, I am sure that this is just a pebble of opportunity. I am glad that you are both seizing this opportunity to enjoy your time together and I am sure this is not the last of what’s in store for you both.

  21. big hugs Kendi!! I have followed you for a long time and enjoyed visiting your adorable store. Best wishes for the next chapter.
    xoxo,
    CG

  22. Your store was one of my absolute favorite places in McKinney! My mom and I used to frequent it often. I moved to Austin last summer and was so sad that I wouldn’t be able to physically shop at Bloom anymore but of course, could take advantage of the online store. I am so sad to hear you all will be closing but your uplifting positive attitude is inspiring! Don’t lose your vision for Bloom, it’s a great thing you’ve got going!

  23. Great outlook and wonderful honest post! Pop-ups would be so great for Bloom! With all the festivals and new little niche cities popping up. Bloom is one of my favorite store fronts in Downtown McKinney, it fits the Stars Hollow aesthetic of the square perfectly.

      1. That is the cutest!! I guess you and Sookie will be moving on to the Dragonfly Inn next! 🙂 Seriously, though, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you and Bloom.

  24. I know just how you feel. A similar thing happened to our shop just this past October. It’s been several months & we are still sorting out the next step while continuing to grow our online shop. Good things will come of this! Stay positive! I wish you the best of luck on your new adventures!

  25. Thank you for always being a real human being with us kendi! I know this is tough but I’m a firm believer everything somehow finds a way to work out for the best. Cant wait to seee what you’re next move is and rest assured, I will be here waiting 🙂

  26. Sorry for the news, I can’t be to the front store, but I’ll support your online store. Good luck and enjoy your life change!

  27. Kendi, I’m so sorry to hear this, but also so EXCITED for you!! I know you will turn this into an incredible life opportunity! Glad I was able to see the store last week and chat with you! Go get em girl! Oh, P.S. There’s tons of shop space available in Lubbock if you ever get the urge 😉

    1. Calley! Did you realize that our old landlord came in while you were checking out and loudly said “i’m so sad you are closing!” I was like “shhhhh no one knows yet!” But I’m glad you got to come in too!! Lubbock may need a bloom pop up 😉

      1. Ha! That’s hilarious! If I would have heard that I may have chained myself to your store! I am totally backing a Bloom pop up in Lubbock! You could count on me to be your #1 customer 😉

  28. Miss Kendi, I am soo sorry to hear the news about bloom closing down (the store that is). You have truly been an inspiration to so many gals on the internets on how to have a dream and make it a reality. I really hope you don’t feel like you are disappointing us. This was such a raw and honest post and I want to thank you for that. Keep your head up! I am sure you and the man friend are going to have plenty of opportunities to recreate bloom into something bigger and better. Yes, a chapter may be ending but look at it this way – a new chapter is also beginning;)

sending positive vibes and prayers your way!
    xo, Joanne

  29. Kendi, I am truly sorry life has thrown you this hell of a curveball. But it’s great to see that you’re able to cast a positive spin on it. I hope you and your husband enjoy a little down time and amazing new opportunities come your way very soon.

    praying for you-
    Mia

  30. So sorry to hear the news, but I think your attitude about this is fantastic! You can only keep moving forward and like you said, this has opened up tons of other opportunities maybe you wouldn’t have even considered if you had been able to keep the store front open. Also, on a final note, just because a door proverbially shuts for a bit doesn’t mean you can’t open it again when the time is right. 😉 You’ll figure it out!

  31. While I want to say I’m sorry that you’re losing the store front, it sounds like you’ve found the silver lining in it…at least for now. Keep your eyes wide open, ear to the ground, and your next step will find you.

Until then, I hope you get to use this time to sleep in, relax, and do all those things that owning a business makes damn near impossible. Because when that next step comes, I have a good feeling you’re going to be very, very busy again – and in a good way!

    Hang in there!

  32. One of my favorite quotes is “when you get to the end of a rope, tie a knot and hold on”… there are new, bigger and better things ahead for you, bloom, business endeavors and whatever else you dream of! Congratulations and best of luck!

  33. I’m so sorry for the closing of Bloom. But you will be on to better things! I am excited to see! : )

  34. Kendi you are so strong and so inspiring! I’m sorry to hear that Bloom’s storefront will be closing but I know there is a reason and that what will come will be even better then you imagined!

  35. Don’t be discouraged. It takes for one door to close for another to open. This is the beginning to your bright future I really believe that.

  36. I’m so sorry to hear about the storefront but amazed at your positive spirit to explore what’s next. I’ve been personally dealing with a nightmare situation that came as a result of a landlord – of course entirely different circumstances – but it threw my life upside down and I know how the emotions can be and how draining wondering what your options can be. Keep your chin up and can’t wait to see what you do next- whatever it is, it’ll be wonderful!

  37. In Noblesville, IN there’s a square that sounds a lot like the one you described. There’s this amazing ice cream truck there that drives around and is a refinished furniture and clothing store. It simply drives around to different neighborhoods, parks, and sets up shop. People are obsessed with it. I’m sure you have so many ideas for the next step, and I wish you well. You’ve already done the hardest part–making a new business successful. You got this:)

    1. Ha! I happen to live near that little town, too. 🙂 Funny for that to be the first thing I see! Yes, Retro101 (although her clothes are NOT retro) operates out of a little old bus and follows the food trucks around (among other stops!). Also, really…I appreciate your post. As a business owner on the Internet–it’s always nice to see other people’s “real”.

  38. Oh Kendi – I’m so sorry! There will be new adventures and fun. Bloom is definitely not gone – you are just too talented to let that happen. Wish you both all the best with the sticky decisions ahead.

  39. congrats on 3 great years and for also listening to the whispers that have lead you down this path. while not always easy, it is always best to follow the signs. i know greatness will come from your decisions. thanks for sharing.

  40. Wow, this is a breathtaking and heartfelt article. I met you at IFBcon in 2012 and have followed your blog ever since. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read from you and have admired all that you’ve accomplished for yourself. I’m sad to know that you guys are closing your storefront, but believe very strongly that this will simply propel you forward for whatever comes next. Thanks so much for sharing, and best of luck to you guys! http://www.stushigalstyle.com

  41. Hang in there, and your positive attitude in the face of challenges is a big reason why I come to your blog. Keeping you in my prayers.

  42. As a small-business owner with a shopfront that has been doing amazingly well the past couple years, I read this post with commiseration and understanding, but also (I admit it freely) with more than a touch of envy!
I’m sure it’s been a long time since weekends really existed for you, and also late coffee mornings and daytime drinking and trips away that haven’t been planned months and months in advance!
I’m sad that your wonderful adventure came to a crashing halt in one way, but I’m very glad to hear you’re embracing the new opportunities that hadn’t made themselves known before! Enjoy a bit of wind-down the next few months. You’re headed somewhere new and awesome.

  43. Oh no Kendi! McKinney will definitely not be the same without you guys.. Popping in to visit was always such a treat. Never did I have expect such kindness and heart.. Wishing you all the best in what you discover on the other side of this suddenly closed door or by sliding through an open window. And cheers to you and weekends and wine and the excitement of not knowing what’s next. If Bloom was any indication, it will be amazing!

  44. I think this is so beautifully written and such an inspiring post. I say kudos to you for this attitude and everything that follows after. I’m so very excited for your next chapter. xxo

  45. I’m sad to hear that I’ll never be able to make it out to Bloom in person in the current incarnation, but I hope you find the next “right” thing. People are often way too judgey about the hard decisions others make. If I can offer any advice as a person who has made similar difficult decisions, if people give you crap, just be confident in your choices. You guys know what is right for you and anybody else who questions or gives your stink eye can suck it. Can’t wait to see what you get into next. Good luck!

  46. first ,congratulations on everything you have accomplished so far (which is so much!) second, i’m so excited to follow you on your continuing journey. i know you are going to keep doing amazing things!

  47. wow- completely not what i was expecting! I’m so sorry that this has been sprung on you! however from a family business background (80 years in one store front – & a new business in the last year) I Just wanted to pop by and assure yourself and bryan that you’ve done it before (and so incredibly well!) that if you wanted too you will do it again, you could and you will in whichever form it comes to you! I think the ten thousand comments you’ll get here today will tell you that we believe in you guys & Bloom and know you’ll be back on top in no time! 🙂

Best of luck! To the new Bloom! (holds up invisible glass 🙂

  48. “Every story has an end. But in life, every end is a new beginning”. You’re such an inspiration and I’m sure this is just the beginning of a new exciting chapter! Best of luck figuring everything out! We know you will!!!

  49. Sometimes it’s hardest to stop and start a different way. Good luck with the next steps – can’t wait to see what you do next. I’m certain it will be fabulous!!

  50. So much love to you, Kendi! You are my absolute favourite blogger and “style guru,” and I just know that there is an amazing new future ahead for you and your husband. Thank you as always for sharing yourself, your dreams, and your fashion with us 🙂

  51. I’m so sorry you are going through this, but you seem to really be approaching it with great poise! I wish you well in your future endeavors, and I hope that you find comfort in knowing you have this huge virtual family supporting whatever decisions you make!

  52. so sorry to hear about this, but excited for the possibilities that await! thanks for this post and your honesty. best of luck to you whatever happens!

  53. I kept telling myself to go see your store every time I’d get an email. Never thinking it would close!!!! I love reading your blog and have loved reading about your little store. It will now be on my list to come see before its gone. I hope the sale of that building isn’t effecting too much of downtown Mckinney. I love that square! Life always throws challenges when you are least expecting, but something even better is usually around the corner when this happens. Can’t wait to see what the future holds!

  54. Sorry to hear that! I have no doubt, though, that you and your husband will figure out new opportunities for the store. Just give it time. Hopefully you’ll continue blogging because, by far, you’re my favourite fashion blogger! All the best in this next chapter!

  55. I’m so sorry to hear that bloom’s storefront is closing. Just a thought, but if there’s a local university, maybe it has a small business incubator. They help small businesses figure out problems. Perhaps it could aid you in exploring your options and possible next steps. Hang in their, the best is yet to come!

  56. That’s an extremely frustrating situation, but you’re right…the possibilities are endless! I’ve been there. It’s heartbreaking watching something you put your heart into come to an end. Fortunately for Bloom, this is not the end. Love, prayers, and virtual hugs to you. Raising a glass to a bright future full of promise!

  57. As a fellow small business owner, I sympathize…the thought of any part of ending is sickening. Just keep thinking of it being the beginning of a new direction for your business. I’m excited to see what you do next!

  58. The inspiration doesn’t come from not closing your doors but from the attitude you’ve taken towards this and the honesty in your sharing. I’m also in a place with no plan and it’s super scary but so inspiring to see that you are doing it with an open heart. Thank you for sharing! I have no doubt that in a couple years, you will look back and think, that was hard but that was a good thing for us.

  59. kendi, this is such a beautiful post, one of my favorites that you’ve ever written. i think it will resonate so much further than other small business owners. in fact, it really feels true to my life–absent of the business and the texas–in feeling like some doors are closing and trying to see that as a new way forward. you may not always know where you are going, but sometimes losing what you thought was stable is a really amazing way of seeing all the possibilities that are out there for you. life is full of surprises!
i am sending lots of good vibes your way as you say goodbye to the storefront, and constructive loving thoughts for this next phase–whatever it may be–in your and B’s life. it seems that everything you tackle together is full of love and passion, and i’m sure the next frontier will be no different.
    xxxxooo

  60. Its sad to know your store is closing for now, I had always planned to come and check it out one day. However I am really excited that this has opened up new possibilities for you and I look forward to reading all about your journey and new adventures.

  61. I know how hard this is! My husband and I closed a business after 5 years, and it was such a hard decision. Once the decision was made though, it opened up so many doors for us. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

  62. I have always admired your honesty on the blog. You’ve opened my eyes to a great truth…that the end isn’t always the end, just the beginning of something new. The fact that you started the shop in the first place was excellent, so I know you can do anything and that your avid followers and shoppers will stay with you throughout it all. Good luck to the future and congrats on everything you’ve accomplished!

  63. So sorry to hear this! Although this is sad, I love that your looking at it as positive as you can! All works out for the best at the end of the day! Good luck!

    poorgirlrichlifeblog.wordpress.com

  64. I am inspired by your attitude in all of this. The positivity (although a road to get there I realize) is awesome. It may be hard to see change as an opportunity and I am so glad you got there. Cheers to what is next!

  65. Wow, what a success Bloom has been, and continues to be! You should be so proud of yourselves. Here’s to coming out of this on top, and on to other things you’ve always wanted to accomplish! 🙂

  66. Wow, the beginning of this post was so disheartening to me as I have dreams of opening up my own store in the future and yours was just so new!! It sounds like you have the right outlook though and it’s true that you cannot ignore the signs that God is giving you. Sounds like everything is going to work itself out for the better and you have a great man by your side to help make your dreams a reality!

  67. I never comment but I’ve been a reader for a VERRRRYY long time. That was an awesome Oprah quote and a very good way of looking at it. I hope you guys come back bigger and better than ever!

  68. Super inspirational Kendi. I’ve been following your blog for a long time, and I’m in love with the Oprah quote as I’m about to venture off to start my own business. Unrelated to fashion, but nonetheless, while disheartening to see your dreams put at a hold, I can’t wait and know that you and your husband will bring something great in the future. Cheers and good luck!

    1. I love Oprah in general. I don’t even know how I came upon this quote! (Actually I think it was a Jillian Michaels podcast…I love inspiration women, can you tell?) Anyways best of luck in your new venture! There is nothing better than a new start!

  69. Thanks for this. I’m a recent college grad who landed my “dream job” that I’m discovering I don’t love as much as I thought I would. It’s comforting to be reminded that I don’t have to have all of the answers right now.

I have no doubt that you will find a way to bring Bloom back stronger than ever. Best wishes!

    1. I feel like this is something they should prepare you for in college after you graduate; jobs are jobs even when they are the greatest jobs in the world. I heard somewhere that our generation will have 4-5 careers in their lifetime so don’t fret, there will be lots of dream jobs — promise 🙂

  70. You do have a plan: keep going with the online shop and see what happens. This might not be as active a plan of action as what you would prefer, but it’s still a plan. Chin up, Kendi. We are all rooting for you, and I know more good things are coming your way.

    1. You know what? That’s very true! I guess since I don’t know exactly what it looks like and what I should be doing, etc. it just feels a little lost to me. But you’re right — my plan is to keep going. I like that 😉

  71. I know you will do what is exactly right for you both and it will be blessed and wonderful – and we, your readers, are behind you always! 🙂

  72. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do. We’ll be cheering you on from the “Comments” section. 🙂

  73. I can’t deny that my mouth fell open when I read the news but life is often out of our control and I give you huge kudos for looking on the bright side. Your writing is always inspirational and so down-to-earth at the same time. I wish you the very best in this next step!

  74. I got momentarily sad ( which, is hilarious since I live in NYC and have never been to your store..i mean how can I possibly be bummed about this?) when I saw this. I remember when you posted about quitting your job and opening this store. I remember the posts about the long hours and what it took to keep this going. But then I also remembered you’re a person, with hopes for a normal life where you don’t live and breathe your business. Wherever you go next, I’m sure it’ll be equally as successful if not better, because now you have the knowledge you’ve gained over the last 3 years.

    Good luck!

PS: if you tell me you’re no longer blogging I’m taking back my good luck and going elsewhere.

    Jez

    1. ha! i’m still blogging for sure — that’s one thing I just can’t shake. 🙂 Thanks though for the kind words. It is a sad thing. I mean I’m moving boxes and cleaning things out as we speak (type?) but at some point it is what it is. I’m glad to be doing something different soon, but it’s not always fun getting there. Thanks again for the encouragement, it means a lot.

      1. Perhaps if you have free time coming up, why not return to that AWESOME marriage blog you had years back? I was HIGHLY amused by it and clearly the opinion of a complete stranger on what you should do with your life matters wayyyyy more than your own.

        1. BAH. Better off wed?? I could always bring that back, couldn’t I? Oh it was so fun when we were first married to write those posts, ha. I think now it would be posts like “how to apologize to your spouse for the things you said when you were hungry” and “how to hide a dirty house… with blankets and blindfolds”. All of the advice NO ONE needs to know 😉

          1. Everyone needs to know that! The other day I was in a hurry and my room was a disaster. My fella was coming over for dinner. I threw everything on top of my bed that was on my bedroom floor, and then wrapped my fitted sheet around it. Threw it in the closet, and closed the door. BAM. Totally clean room AND fresh sheets on the bed. This should be a post: reaching new limits for laziness and procrastination

  75. Beautifully said Kendi! I’ve been following your blog for years (yes, I’ve read every single post!) for exactly this reason, you are so inspiring. I just opened my own clothing store and it’s been a wild ride! I remember reading your posts about opening Bloom and they resonated with me in so many ways on my own journey. I’m sending you big happy hugs from Canada, you are amazing and no doubt this will be the catalyst for something brilliant and beautiful!
    Kasia xx

  76. You’ll do great in whatever you decide! For now, take a breather and enjoy some downtime 🙂 you are fantastic!!

  77. So so true.. and God’s plan is so much better than ours… You will get through this with grace and poise… so exciting new adventures and congrats on all the endless possibilities this could bring…

  78. Hi.

I totally, totally understand you. I started my little online shop almost 2 years ago and its been tough. Rethinking, replanning, it’s just very tiring and time consuming.

You have to look at this as well, unfortunate but you have made a name for yourself and thats great. It will open up doors for you.

It will all be ok. 🙂

    Xo,

    Belen

  79. I think it will all work out for the best. I’m impressed with your great attitude, which I’m sure came at a cost, but inspires me.

  80. Oh, Kendi, I am sorry to hear this but your attitude is really inspirational. I’m looking at some big changes in my life and I’ve been fighting them tooth and nail. You’ve encouraged me to at least take a good look the possibilities. Thank you!

  81. Oh wow I’m sorry you have to go through this but yes there’s something great coming along! I have been wanting to visit your shop since you moved here and just haven’t! Now I will be sure too!! Thanks for sharing!

  82. What a hard decision!!!! Will be thinking of you and the long road ahead – I think keeping your online store is definitely a good decision (and for my closet as well) but the fear of the unknown is stressful. Keep us updated – we love you….and Bloom!

  83. Dear Kendi, So sorry that circumstances mean you have to close your premiere store. I hope, as you & B do that you are able to turn this into a positive opportunity and that ‘new door opens for you soon’. In the meantime, I and many others will keep following your blog and fashion buys for ‘bloom online’. Sadly as an Aussie I can’t purchase anything : (. But maybe international shipping will become part of ‘new bloom’ : ). Best wishes for the future, whatever it holds.

    1. If we can figure out international shipping we will definitely open it up to you! That was one of the first things B said when we were talking online only. :)Thanks for the encouragement, Samantha!

  84. I am sorry because you really had a terrific store … but yes. New opportunities and a new chance to do what you want. Have fun. Stress little an worry less!

  85. I love your positive outlook and your determination to see the opportunities that will come from this. I look forward to seeing where the next steps will take you and hope that the next adventure is even greater than the last. Good luck! I still plan on keeping an eye on your online storefront as well 🙂

  86. I'm sorry, Kendi. I know the loss of the store, into which you poured so much of your souls and your hard work, is so disappointing. But we'll still be here to encourage you. I know something will come along, and it will probably be even better. Good luck to you!

  87. Wow, your attitude is amazing, Kendi!! Good luck to you and B with everything!! (P.S. here in Philly fashion trucks are a thing — maybe something to look into one day?)

  88. Well that makes it official — I've been dying to drive up to McKinney and visit your shop, and now it MUST happen. Been a huge fan since the beginning of the blog, and I know whatever you do in the future will be amazing! Continue to trust and walk in faith, y'all will get there 🙂

  89. Kendi, I have a little pit of anxiety in my tummy reading this post, because the flower shop's building is also for sale and it's always hanging in the back of my mind that we may come into work tomorrow and our landlord will say we have to go. I can only imagine how difficult this decision was for you and Bryan. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter. You can always move to Florida and be a florist with me 😉

  90. oh kendi, my heart breaks for you! this post made me tear up a little bit. your blog is one of my favorites, because you are so real, and honest, and true to yourself, and this post is no different. i have no doubt that you will land on your feet, wherever that landing may be. i hate to use this phrase, but when one door closes (in your case, literally), another door opens. no one can know what lies ahead for you, but if your past and your perseverance and your overall awesomeness is any indication, what comes next will be glorious and wonderful.

  91. Kendi — I follow you everywhere. Instagram, blog, facebook, etc. I am also an online and storefront owner. My heart truly breaks for you. I can’t imagine having to close my store down, but I will say this… I truly believe that you have the following to do whatever you want. Plant your new garden and you can bloom anywhere 🙂

  92. Super sad that I never had the chance to make it to the shop, but after reading this whole post, I feel the tiniest bit of hope that a pop-up shop tour would bring you to Seattle, and it would be the best thing ever. Best of luck and can't wait to hear what this opportunity turns into for both of you!

  93. Keira: oh no on the floral shop building being up for sale BUT asking around this is not typical. Even our landlord who sold the building was surprised that they wanted to use the building instead of just owning it. Seriously, I wouldn't worry. But keep me updated!

  94. What a tough choice to make and a tough post to write I'm sure. But you're right, there are so many doors that open when one closes and now the possibilities are endless for you two. Sometimes that uncertainty is just what we need, it's what keeps us alive!

  95. Your comment made ME tear up! I've definitely had a few weeks to process this and the decision came slowly so I really am okay 🙂 I agree on the one door closes and another one opens wholeheartedly. I have the weirdest mix of excited and sadness, it's a weird place to be in my head these days! But overall I am excited to see what is next, we just have to get through the closing part, that's the hard part! Thanks for your love and concern, means a lot 🙂

  96. Wow, beautiful post, Kendi! Best of luck with whatever God has planned for you guys!

  97. Hi Kendi! I’ll start off by saying I’ve been following your blog for years now, and have loved following your blossoming of style and Bloom. I’m just horrible at commenting on your blog, but always leave a little love on your Insta.

I’m saddened to hear that your storefront is closing down. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m sure this was the brick to open up something new. Perhaps a brother or sister for you dog Carlos? Huh, huhhh? LOL

Good luck on your future endeavors, and I’ll keep watching from afar! (That sounds SO creepy! LOL)

    xxxo, Vanessa
    _vuhnessa on Insta 🙂

  98. I'm sorry to hear that! McKinney has a great Downtown and it will miss your store. You have a great attitude and I can't wait to see what vodka lemonade you come up with.

  99. I'm sad about your situation, but I really admire your attitude.

If McKinney wasn't a 4 hour drive, I'd be on my way right now ha. Best wishes to you both! I look forward to seeing the future of Bloom 🙂

  100. I am glad that you are both seizing this opportunity to enjoy your time together and I am sure this is not the last of what's in store for you both.

  101. big hugs Kendi!! I have followed you for a long time and enjoyed visiting your adorable store. Best wishes for the next chapter.
    xoxo,
    CG

  102. Your store was one of my absolute favorite places in McKinney! My mom and I used to frequent it often. I moved to Austin last summer and was so sad that I wouldn't be able to physically shop at Bloom anymore but of course, could take advantage of the online store. I am so sad to hear you all will be closing but your uplifting positive attitude is inspiring! Don't lose your vision for Bloom, it's a great thing you've got going!

  103. Great outlook and wonderful honest post! Pop-ups would be so great for Bloom! With all the festivals and new little niche cities popping up. Bloom is one of my favorite store fronts in Downtown McKinney, it fits the Stars Hollow aesthetic of the square perfectly.

  104. Kendi,

I’ve been a blog reader of yours for years — before Bloom, way back when you had your desk job — and while I rarely make the time to comment, I’ve always been impressed with your boldness and bravery. In fact, thanks in part to your blog — and bloggers/writers like you — I, too, quit my “normal” job to run a small business: a bookstore I love in a small Southern town my husband and I now call home. It is ridiculously hard, entrepreneurship, and I’ve long been grateful that you’ve made that clear on your blog and on Instagram. So often people make it look easy, and you instead made it look real, and as a fellow business owner just learning the ropes, I appreciated that. This post is brave; your decision is brave. (I’m reminded, of course, of my favorite film — the cheesy little movie that has inspired so much of my life, “You’ve Got Mail”: “Closing the store is the brave thing to do.”) Owning a storefront is no small accomplishment, and YOU DID IT. Successfully. My husband and I talk often about what we will do if/when our dream here ends. I cry, sometimes, thinking that our bookstore might not last forever. But then again? We’ll have Saturdays. And vacations. And naps. And, as my husband often tells me, we’ll get to say we did it. We tried. We gave it our best shot.

You gave it your best shot, and I think I speak for much of the Internet when I say, “Well done.” You’ve inspired and encouraged a lot of us, and now it’s our turn to do the same for you.

Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. New adventures, I’m sure.

    Annie

    1. Annie — THANK YOU. So kind. Also thank you for bringing up You’ve Got Mail. I told B the other day I totally feel like Kathleen Kelly except without the online dating profile, Fox Books, the twinkle lights and the twirling. And I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the beginning/end of small businesses. I mean obviously one part of our business is ending but you’re right — we absolutely did it. I feel about 20 years older somedays just from the three years of experience I was given through this. I’m sure you’ll understand this too — me and B while excited for about two Saturdays off I’m pretty sure we are NOT going to know what to do with ourselves.

Best of luck with your book store. I’m sure it is adorable. (Also, you’re actually Kathleen Kelly now that I think about it… 😉

      Kendi

  105. I know just how you feel. A similar thing happened to our shop just this past October. It's been several months & we are still sorting out the next step while continuing to grow our online shop. Good things will come of this! Stay positive! I wish you the best of luck on your new adventures!

  106. Thank you for always being a real human being with us kendi! I know this is tough but I'm a firm believer everything somehow finds a way to work out for the best. Cant wait to seee what you're next move is and rest assured, I will be here waiting 🙂

  107. Sorry for the news, I can't be to the front store, but I'll support your online store. Good luck and enjoy your life change!

  108. Kendi, I'm so sorry to hear this, but also so EXCITED for you!! I know you will turn this into an incredible life opportunity! Glad I was able to see the store last week and chat with you! Go get em girl! Oh, P.S. There's tons of shop space available in Lubbock if you ever get the urge 😉

  109. Miss Kendi, I am soo sorry to hear the news about bloom closing down (the store that is). You have truly been an inspiration to so many gals on the internets on how to have a dream and make it a reality. I really hope you don't feel like you are disappointing us. This was such a raw and honest post and I want to thank you for that. Keep your head up! I am sure you and the man friend are going to have plenty of opportunities to recreate bloom into something bigger and better. Yes, a chapter may be ending but look at it this way – a new chapter is also beginning;)

sending positive vibes and prayers your way!
    xo, Joanne

  110. Kendi, I am truly sorry life has thrown you this hell of a curveball. But it's great to see that you're able to cast a positive spin on it. I hope you and your husband enjoy a little down time and amazing new opportunities come your way very soon.

    praying for you-
    Mia

  111. Calley! Did you realize that our old landlord came in while you were checking out and loudly said "i'm so sad you are closing!" I was like "shhhhh no one knows yet!" But I'm glad you got to come in too!! Lubbock may need a bloom pop up 😉

  112. So sorry to hear the news, but I think your attitude about this is fantastic! You can only keep moving forward and like you said, this has opened up tons of other opportunities maybe you wouldn't have even considered if you had been able to keep the store front open. Also, on a final note, just because a door proverbially shuts for a bit doesn't mean you can't open it again when the time is right. 😉 You'll figure it out!

  113. While I want to say I'm sorry that you're losing the store front, it sounds like you've found the silver lining in it…at least for now. Keep your eyes wide open, ear to the ground, and your next step will find you.

Until then, I hope you get to use this time to sleep in, relax, and do all those things that owning a business makes damn near impossible. Because when that next step comes, I have a good feeling you're going to be very, very busy again – and in a good way!

    Hang in there!

  114. One of my favorite quotes is "when you get to the end of a rope, tie a knot and hold on"… there are new, bigger and better things ahead for you, bloom, business endeavors and whatever else you dream of! Congratulations and best of luck!

  115. Kendi you are so strong and so inspiring! I'm sorry to hear that Bloom's storefront will be closing but I know there is a reason and that what will come will be even better then you imagined!

  116. Don't be discouraged. It takes for one door to close for another to open. This is the beginning to your bright future I really believe that.

  117. Kendi, I have read your blog for years, and you are such an inspiring lady. Thank you for your courage, and candor- it makes you special! You’re moving on to great things… the best is yet to come.

  118. I'm so sorry to hear about the storefront but amazed at your positive spirit to explore what's next. I've been personally dealing with a nightmare situation that came as a result of a landlord – of course entirely different circumstances – but it threw my life upside down and I know how the emotions can be and how draining wondering what your options can be. Keep your chin up and can't wait to see what you do next- whatever it is, it'll be wonderful!

  119. I have been reading your posts regularly for almost a year now but I have never commented. I want to say that you’re posts have always been comforting to me. You bring real life to the internet and that alone is refreshing. It also helps that you have wicked good style 🙂 I wish you, your husband, and Bloom all the success that is deserved.

  120. In Noblesville, IN there's a square that sounds a lot like the one you described. There's this amazing ice cream truck there that drives around and is a refinished furniture and clothing store. It simply drives around to different neighborhoods, parks, and sets up shop. People are obsessed with it. I'm sure you have so many ideas for the next step, and I wish you well. You've already done the hardest part–making a new business successful. You got this:)

  121. Oh Kendi – I'm so sorry! There will be new adventures and fun. Bloom is definitely not gone – you are just too talented to let that happen. Wish you both all the best with the sticky decisions ahead.

  122. congrats on 3 great years and for also listening to the whispers that have lead you down this path. while not always easy, it is always best to follow the signs. i know greatness will come from your decisions. thanks for sharing.

  123. Wow, this is a breathtaking and heartfelt article. I met you at IFBcon in 2012 and have followed your blog ever since. I've enjoyed everything I've read from you and have admired all that you've accomplished for yourself. I'm sad to know that you guys are closing your storefront, but believe very strongly that this will simply propel you forward for whatever comes next. Thanks so much for sharing, and best of luck to you guys! http://www.stushigalstyle.com

  124. Hi Kendi, I am at Brazil… it’s interesting to realize that even so far away from me there’s a person that has a real life, that it is not so different from my own life. We both have problems and sometimes, life make us surprises.

I’ve read your entire post. My english is improving day by day. I loved this text.

My wish for you guys is: Success! God bless you in your new journey.

  125. Hang in there, and your positive attitude in the face of challenges is a big reason why I come to your blog. Keeping you in my prayers.

  126. As a small-business owner with a shopfront that has been doing amazingly well the past couple years, I read this post with commiseration and understanding, but also (I admit it freely) with more than a touch of envy!
I'm sure it's been a long time since weekends really existed for you, and also late coffee mornings and daytime drinking and trips away that haven't been planned months and months in advance!
I'm sad that your wonderful adventure came to a crashing halt in one way, but I'm very glad to hear you're embracing the new opportunities that hadn't made themselves known before! Enjoy a bit of wind-down the next few months. You're headed somewhere new and awesome.

  127. Ha! I happen to live near that little town, too. 🙂 Funny for that to be the first thing I see! Yes, Retro101 (although her clothes are NOT retro) operates out of a little old bus and follows the food trucks around (among other stops!). Also, really…I appreciate your post. As a business owner on the Internet–it's always nice to see other people's "real".

  128. Oh no Kendi! McKinney will definitely not be the same without you guys.. Popping in to visit was always such a treat. Never did I have expect such kindness and heart.. Wishing you all the best in what you discover on the other side of this suddenly closed door or by sliding through an open window. And cheers to you and weekends and wine and the excitement of not knowing what's next. If Bloom was any indication, it will be amazing!

  129. I echo the comments before me here by saying I’m really bummed to read Bloom will be closing. I have been to your sweet store several times, and have been so impressed with it. Each time it was a pleasure to talk with you or B, be inspired and walk away with something special. This experience can definitely translate into your online store, but downtown McKinney will be losing a gem, for sure. Thank you for sharing your lives, style and creativity through this retail adventure. I’ll be praying for clairty and direction as you guys as you start your next big adventure!

  130. I think this is so beautifully written and such an inspiring post. I say kudos to you for this attitude and everything that follows after. I'm so very excited for your next chapter. xxo

  131. I'm sad to hear that I'll never be able to make it out to Bloom in person in the current incarnation, but I hope you find the next "right" thing. People are often way too judgey about the hard decisions others make. If I can offer any advice as a person who has made similar difficult decisions, if people give you crap, just be confident in your choices. You guys know what is right for you and anybody else who questions or gives your stink eye can suck it. Can't wait to see what you get into next. Good luck!

  132. first ,congratulations on everything you have accomplished so far (which is so much!) second, i'm so excited to follow you on your continuing journey. i know you are going to keep doing amazing things!

  133. Kendi,

Your decision to embrace the next chapter with positivity and possibilities as your focus is so brave and so inspiring. My small business of 3 years recently went through a similar experience. At first, my business partner and I were brokenhearted as our business was gaining momentum and exhibiting steady growth too. For unrelated reasons however, we encountered our own proverbial brick wall and were confronted with a similar, difficult decision. Once I decided to stop frantically trying to seek out every option that would keep what we had going, and open my eyes to the full spectrum of new possibilities at my doorstep, it was like a lightbulb went on.

I have never felt more inspired, experienced or equipped to take on a new season than I feel now. I can honestly say that this evolution in my career and the things I learned over the last 3 years are some of the greatest gifts I’ve received in my life. I would never trade the experience and yet, I am immensely grateful for the gentle whispers that encouraged me in a different direction at a time I wasn’t expecting them. They were winds of change I didn’t plan on but now couldn’t imagine my life without.

Wishing you and B the most incredible next chapter!!

    Carli

  134. That is the cutest!! I guess you and Sookie will be moving on to the Dragonfly Inn next! 🙂 Seriously, though, I can't wait to see what the future holds for you and Bloom.

  135. wow- completely not what i was expecting! I'm so sorry that this has been sprung on you! however from a family business background (80 years in one store front – & a new business in the last year) I Just wanted to pop by and assure yourself and bryan that you've done it before (and so incredibly well!) that if you wanted too you will do it again, you could and you will in whichever form it comes to you! I think the ten thousand comments you'll get here today will tell you that we believe in you guys & Bloom and know you'll be back on top in no time! 🙂

Best of luck! To the new Bloom! (holds up invisible glass 🙂

  136. "Every story has an end. But in life, every end is a new beginning". You're such an inspiration and I'm sure this is just the beginning of a new exciting chapter! Best of luck figuring everything out! We know you will!!!

  137. Holy smokes batman! So proud of what Bloom has become, and what it seems, the business woman you have become! So sad to see that little gem close, *there was just a retail shop that closed in my town of Boulder, CO down the road that would fit you guys’ style!!* Anyway, good luck on the new adventure. It is just a plot twist! Go forth and be brave!

  138. Sometimes it's hardest to stop and start a different way. Good luck with the next steps – can't wait to see what you do next. I'm certain it will be fabulous!!

  139. an inspiring post. thanks for being so honest with your business and your life! looking forward to following along with what comes next for you and your husband.

  140. So much love to you, Kendi! You are my absolute favourite blogger and "style guru," and I just know that there is an amazing new future ahead for you and your husband. Thank you as always for sharing yourself, your dreams, and your fashion with us 🙂

  141. I'm so sorry you are going through this, but you seem to really be approaching it with great poise! I wish you well in your future endeavors, and I hope that you find comfort in knowing you have this huge virtual family supporting whatever decisions you make!

  142. so sorry to hear about this, but excited for the possibilities that await! thanks for this post and your honesty. best of luck to you whatever happens!

  143. I kept telling myself to go see your store every time I'd get an email. Never thinking it would close!!!! I love reading your blog and have loved reading about your little store. It will now be on my list to come see before its gone. I hope the sale of that building isn't effecting too much of downtown Mckinney. I love that square! Life always throws challenges when you are least expecting, but something even better is usually around the corner when this happens. Can't wait to see what the future holds!

  144. Sorry to hear that! I have no doubt, though, that you and your husband will figure out new opportunities for the store. Just give it time. Hopefully you'll continue blogging because, by far, you're my favourite fashion blogger! All the best in this next chapter!

  145. I'm so sorry to hear that bloom's storefront is closing. Just a thought, but if there's a local university, maybe it has a small business incubator. They help small businesses figure out problems. Perhaps it could aid you in exploring your options and possible next steps. Hang in their, the best is yet to come!

  146. That's an extremely frustrating situation, but you're right…the possibilities are endless! I've been there. It's heartbreaking watching something you put your heart into come to an end. Fortunately for Bloom, this is not the end. Love, prayers, and virtual hugs to you. Raising a glass to a bright future full of promise!

  147. Good luck Kendi! You are for sure an inspiration to me, and continue to be so with your strength. Hugs!

  148. As a fellow small business owner, I sympathize…the thought of any part of ending is sickening. Just keep thinking of it being the beginning of a new direction for your business. I'm excited to see what you do next!

  149. The inspiration doesn't come from not closing your doors but from the attitude you've taken towards this and the honesty in your sharing. I'm also in a place with no plan and it's super scary but so inspiring to see that you are doing it with an open heart. Thank you for sharing! I have no doubt that in a couple years, you will look back and think, that was hard but that was a good thing for us.

  150. kendi, this is such a beautiful post, one of my favorites that you've ever written. i think it will resonate so much further than other small business owners. in fact, it really feels true to my life–absent of the business and the texas–in feeling like some doors are closing and trying to see that as a new way forward. you may not always know where you are going, but sometimes losing what you thought was stable is a really amazing way of seeing all the possibilities that are out there for you. life is full of surprises!
i am sending lots of good vibes your way as you say goodbye to the storefront, and constructive loving thoughts for this next phase–whatever it may be–in your and B's life. it seems that everything you tackle together is full of love and passion, and i'm sure the next frontier will be no different.
    xxxxooo

  151. Its sad to know your store is closing for now, I had always planned to come and check it out one day. However I am really excited that this has opened up new possibilities for you and I look forward to reading all about your journey and new adventures.

  152. I know how hard this is! My husband and I closed a business after 5 years, and it was such a hard decision. Once the decision was made though, it opened up so many doors for us. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

  153. I have always admired your honesty on the blog. You've opened my eyes to a great truth…that the end isn't always the end, just the beginning of something new. The fact that you started the shop in the first place was excellent, so I know you can do anything and that your avid followers and shoppers will stay with you throughout it all. Good luck to the future and congrats on everything you've accomplished!

  154. So sorry to hear this! Although this is sad, I love that your looking at it as positive as you can! All works out for the best at the end of the day! Good luck!

  155. I am inspired by your attitude in all of this. The positivity (although a road to get there I realize) is awesome. It may be hard to see change as an opportunity and I am so glad you got there. Cheers to what is next!

  156. You guys are amazing people who are beautiful both inside and out. I want nothing but the very best for you, and I know without a doubt that you two awesome people will forge your way through the uncertainty, and come out on top. I’m praying for you!!

  157. Ah, Kendi! Has it really been (almost) three years?! You’ve come so far and there’s no doubt you have much farther to go…but for now, you deserve a weekend, a vacation…a nap. All the best, and congrats on everything you’ve achieved so far. I look forward to following your next steps!

    1. Nap first, weekend/brunch second, vacation third. In that order 😉 Thanks for your encouragement!

And yes — almost three years!! I almost couldn’t believe it either!

  158. Wow, what a success Bloom has been, and continues to be! You should be so proud of yourselves. Here's to coming out of this on top, and on to other things you've always wanted to accomplish! 🙂

  159. Wow, the beginning of this post was so disheartening to me as I have dreams of opening up my own store in the future and yours was just so new!! It sounds like you have the right outlook though and it's true that you cannot ignore the signs that God is giving you. Sounds like everything is going to work itself out for the better and you have a great man by your side to help make your dreams a reality!

  160. I never comment but I've been a reader for a VERRRRYY long time. That was an awesome Oprah quote and a very good way of looking at it. I hope you guys come back bigger and better than ever!

  161. I’m sorry to hear about your shop! It sounds amazing and honestly, it sounds like your first experience of running a shop has been wonderful! God knows what’s in stall for you now but I honestly know that if you do what you want to do and if you don’t close your mind to all possibilities (which you’ve hit the nail on the head), nothing is impossible 😀 Take Care Kendi! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  162. Super inspirational Kendi. I've been following your blog for a long time, and I'm in love with the Oprah quote as I'm about to venture off to start my own business. Unrelated to fashion, but nonetheless, while disheartening to see your dreams put at a hold, I can't wait and know that you and your husband will bring something great in the future. Cheers and good luck!

  163. Thanks for this. I'm a recent college grad who landed my "dream job" that I'm discovering I don't love as much as I thought I would. It's comforting to be reminded that I don't have to have all of the answers right now.

I have no doubt that you will find a way to bring Bloom back stronger than ever. Best wishes!

  164. This makes me sad to hear, but I’m also excited to see what you’re going to do next, Kendi! I am most definitely in that “what do I do next?” phase in my life, and I can appreciate your uncertainty. I guess we’ll both have to figure this out, sooner or later!

  165. You do have a plan: keep going with the online shop and see what happens. This might not be as active a plan of action as what you would prefer, but it's still a plan. Chin up, Kendi. We are all rooting for you, and I know more good things are coming your way.

  166. I know you will do what is exactly right for you both and it will be blessed and wonderful – and we, your readers, are behind you always! 🙂

  167. Sorry to hear about the unexpected change, but you guys are going to continue to do awesome things! Best of luck in the upcoming days and months!! 🙂

  168. Your positivity is absolutely inspiring. I wish you nothing but the best in finding the next step. Good luck! 🙂

  169. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do. We'll be cheering you on from the "Comments" section. 🙂

  170. I can't deny that my mouth fell open when I read the news but life is often out of our control and I give you huge kudos for looking on the bright side. Your writing is always inspirational and so down-to-earth at the same time. I wish you the very best in this next step!

  171. I got momentarily sad ( which, is hilarious since I live in NYC and have never been to your store..i mean how can I possibly be bummed about this?) when I saw this. I remember when you posted about quitting your job and opening this store. I remember the posts about the long hours and what it took to keep this going. But then I also remembered you're a person, with hopes for a normal life where you don't live and breathe your business. Wherever you go next, I'm sure it'll be equally as successful if not better, because now you have the knowledge you've gained over the last 3 years.

    Good luck!

PS: if you tell me you're no longer blogging I'm taking back my good luck and going elsewhere.

    Jez

  172. ha! i'm still blogging for sure — that's one thing I just can't shake. 🙂 Thanks though for the kind words. It is a sad thing. I mean I'm moving boxes and cleaning things out as we speak (type?) but at some point it is what it is. I'm glad to be doing something different soon, but it's not always fun getting there. Thanks again for the encouragement, it means a lot.

  173. You know what? That's very true! I guess since I don't know exactly what it looks like and what I should be doing, etc. it just feels a little lost to me. But you're right — my plan is to keep going. I like that 😉

  174. These type of things are contributing to McKinney’s downtown loosing its unique charm! What a shame! The small businesses that used to thrive in America are becoming few and far between. The square will be loosing a treasure in your store and it’s kindhearted owners. Unfortunate. So thankful this is turning into a positive for you. I can’t say it is the same for those who have visited your precious store.

  175. I feel like this is something they should prepare you for in college after you graduate; jobs are jobs even when they are the greatest jobs in the world. I heard somewhere that our generation will have 4-5 careers in their lifetime so don't fret, there will be lots of dream jobs — promise 🙂

  176. Perhaps if you have free time coming up, why not return to that AWESOME marriage blog you had years back? I was HIGHLY amused by it and clearly the opinion of a complete stranger on what you should do with your life matters wayyyyy more than your own. Or your husband. Or your pets.

  177. I love Oprah in general. I don't even know how I came upon this quote! (Actually I think it was a Jillian Michaels podcast…I love inspiration women, can you tell?) Anyways best of luck in your new venture! There is nothing better than a new start!

  178. Beautifully said Kendi! I've been following your blog for years (yes, I've read every single post!) for exactly this reason, you are so inspiring. I just opened my own clothing store and it's been a wild ride! I remember reading your posts about opening Bloom and they resonated with me in so many ways on my own journey. I'm sending you big happy hugs from Canada, you are amazing and no doubt this will be the catalyst for something brilliant and beautiful!
    Kasia xx

  179. Oh Kendi! I just loved this entire post. I’m sorry that things didn’t work out the way you planned but I can’t wait to watch your new adventure unfold. As usual, thank you for your honesty and vulnerability – I for one completely appreciate the fact that you have no plan. It makes me (and all of your readers!) feel a bit more normal:) Enjoy your nap/vacation/glass of wine — you’ve earned it!!!

  180. BAH. Better off wed?? I could always bring that back, couldn't I? Oh it was so fun when we were first married to write those posts, ha. I think now it would be posts like "how to apologize to your spouse for the things you said when you were hungry" and "how to hide a dirty house… with blankets and blindfolds". All of the advice NO ONE needs to know 😉

  182. You'll do great in whatever you decide! For now, take a breather and enjoy some downtime 🙂 you are fantastic!!

  183. I am sad that you are closing store, but you are so creative that I am sure something will come along and whisper to you. 🙂

  184. So so true.. and God's plan is so much better than ours… You will get through this with grace and poise… so exciting new adventures and congrats on all the endless possibilities this could bring…

  185. One day, you will look back and realize this was the best thing that ever happened. You and B have each other and your health. That’s all that matters.

  186. Hi.

I totally, totally understand you. I started my little online shop almost 2 years ago and its been tough. Rethinking, replanning, it's just very tiring and time consuming.

You have to look at this as well, unfortunate but you have made a name for yourself and thats great. It will open up doors for you.

It will all be ok. 🙂

    Xo,

  187. I think it will all work out for the best. I'm impressed with your great attitude, which I'm sure came at a cost, but inspires me.

  188. Oh, Kendi, I am sorry to hear this but your attitude is really inspirational. I'm looking at some big changes in my life and I've been fighting them tooth and nail. You've encouraged me to at least take a good look the possibilities. Thank you!

  189. Oh wow I'm sorry you have to go through this but yes there's something great coming along! I have been wanting to visit your shop since you moved here and just haven't! Now I will be sure too!! Thanks for sharing!

  190. Dear Kendi, So sorry that circumstances mean you have to close your premiere store. I hope, as you & B do that you are able to turn this into a positive opportunity and that 'new door opens for you soon'. In the meantime, I and many others will keep following your blog and fashion buys for 'bloom online'. Sadly as an Aussie I can't purchase anything : (. But maybe international shipping will become part of 'new bloom' : ). Best wishes for the future, whatever it holds.

  191. I am sorry because you really had a terrific store … but yes. New opportunities and a new chance to do what you want. Have fun. Stress little an worry less!

  192. Hi Kendi! I'll start off by saying I've been following your blog for years now, and have loved following your blossoming of style and Bloom. I'm just horrible at commenting on your blog, but always leave a little love on your Insta.

I'm saddened to hear that your storefront is closing down. Everything happens for a reason, and I'm sure this was the brick to open up something new. Perhaps a brother or sister for you dog Carlos? Huh, huhhh? LOL

Good luck on your future endeavors, and I'll keep watching from afar! (That sounds SO creepy! LOL)

  193. Kendi,

I've been a blog reader of yours for years — before Bloom, way back when you had your desk job — and while I rarely make the time to comment, I've always been impressed with your boldness and bravery. In fact, thanks in part to your blog — and bloggers/writers like you — I, too, quit my "normal" job to run a small business: a bookstore I love in a small Southern town my husband and I now call home. It is ridiculously hard, entrepreneurship, and I've long been grateful that you've made that clear on your blog and on Instagram. So often people make it look easy, and you instead made it look real, and as a fellow business owner just learning the ropes, I appreciated that. This post is brave; your decision is brave. (I'm reminded, of course, of my favorite film — the cheesy little movie that has inspired so much of my life, "You've Got Mail": "Closing the store is the brave thing to do.") Owning a storefront is no small accomplishment, and YOU DID IT. Successfully. My husband and I talk often about what we will do if/when our dream here ends. I cry, sometimes, thinking that our bookstore might not last forever. But then again? We'll have Saturdays. And vacations. And naps. And, as my husband often tells me, we'll get to say we did it. We tried. We gave it our best shot.

You gave it your best shot, and I think I speak for much of the Internet when I say, "Well done." You've inspired and encouraged a lot of us, and now it's our turn to do the same for you.

Can't wait to see what the future holds for you. New adventures, I'm sure.

    Annie

  194. You are an inspiration and I see great things ahead for you. Wishing you all the best. 🙂

  195. Kendi, I have read your blog for years, and you are such an inspiring lady. Thank you for your courage, and candor- it makes you special! You're moving on to great things… the best is yet to come.

  196. I have been reading your posts regularly for almost a year now but I have never commented. I want to say that you're posts have always been comforting to me. You bring real life to the internet and that alone is refreshing. It also helps that you have wicked good style 🙂 I wish you, your husband, and Bloom all the success that is deserved.

  197. Hi Kendi, I am at Brazil… it's interesting to realize that even so far away from me there's a person that has a real life, that it is not so different from my own life. We both have problems and sometimes, life make us surprises.

I've read your entire post. My english is improving day by day. I loved this text.

My wish for you guys is: Success! God bless you in your new journey.

  198. I echo the comments before me here by saying I'm really bummed to read Bloom will be closing. I'll be praying for clairty and direction as you guys as you start your next big adventure!

I can honestly say that this evolution in my career and the things I learned over the last 3 years are some of the greatest gifts I've received in my life. I would never trade the experience and yet, I am immensely grateful for the gentle whispers that encouraged me in a different direction at a time I wasn't expecting them. They were winds of change I didn't plan on but now couldn't imagine my life without.

Wishing you and B the most incredible next chapter!!

    Carli

  200. Holy smokes batman! So proud of what Bloom has become, and what it seems, the business woman you have become! So sad to see that little gem close, *there was just a retail shop that closed in my town of Boulder, CO down the road that would fit you guys' style!!* Anyway, good luck on the new adventure. It is just a plot twist! Go forth and be brave!

  201. an inspiring post. thanks for being so honest with your business and your life! looking forward to following along with what comes next for you and your husband.

  202. This must be incredibly hard, and I ache for you. But your faith and spirit is encouraging and inspiring. My prayers are with you!

  203. Big hugs to you and B! I know you guys will find a way because you definitely have that powerful will. 😉

  204. You guys are amazing people who are beautiful both inside and out. I want nothing but the very best for you, and I know without a doubt that you two awesome people will forge your way through the uncertainty, and come out on top. I'm praying for you!!

  208. Oh darling! I’m so sorry to hear about Bloom. I can’t even imagine how difficult this choice was for you two to make. Know that you have a whole lot of strangers on the internet rooting for you!

For what its worth, I was blown away by how honest and vulnerable this post was.

  209. This makes me sad to hear, but I'm also excited to see what you're going to do next, Kendi! I am most definitely in that "what do I do next?" phase in my life, and I can appreciate your uncertainty. I guess we'll both have to figure this out, sooner or later!

  210. it will all make sense in the end. if it doesn't make sense, its not the end.
    best of luck!!

  211. Congratulations on your next and newest venture. I am sure you and B have learned SO much from this great experience… and some day, you will look in your proverbial rear-view mirror and know for certain that God had His hand all over this change of plans. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for you next! Stay positive and enjoy this time of rest coming your way.

  212. Kendi! I love your attitude! I can’t wait to see how this next chapter unfolds for you. Thank you for your positivity and your trust and peace. I hope to make it to Bloom one more time before May 10th. I’m praying for you guys and your journey!

  213. Sorry to hear about the unexpected change, but you guys are going to continue to do awesome things! Best of luck in the upcoming days and months!! 🙂

  214. Your positivity is absolutely inspiring. I wish you nothing but the best in finding the next step. Good luck! 🙂

  215. I’m sure this was a tough decision. I’ve also been in your shoes with my restaurant a few years ago. It’s very cliche and hard to believe in the moment but, “things do happen for a reason.” I’m sure you will figure out what all the whispers have been pointing you towards. It’s funny how life works out. Wishing you all the best, and definitely a little R&R!

  216. One day, you will look back and realize this was the best thing that ever happened. You and B have each other and your health. That's all that matters.

  217. I am sure like millions I secretly stock you. In fact, I saw you at the Texas Style Convention and was so star struck. My husband chatted with your B for awhile and totally rubbed it in my face for about an hour. The stocking starting because of your fashion quirkness (love it!) but continued because I was learning alot on how to run a business. I started my interior design business about a year ago and your voice is always in my head. “Be present.” I took it to mean be me when blogging and meeting new clients. The real me…whether the blog isn’t written super professional or may offend…it’s what I would normally say or do. You being vulnerable in your blog posts is why people love you and follow. And why you are successful. Just trying to say thanks. You have support from Austin! I am coming to Dallas tomorrow for Market and planned to stop in your shop. I am working on a non-weird way of possibly trying to introduce myself with out wearing the stocker label on my forehead.

    1. You are SO sweet, Jessie! Why did you not say hi!? I promise I don’t bite. If you come into the shop today, please say something! I will probably be there this afternoon or at the local coffee shop Snug, so if you do stop in today or tomorrow I’ll be at one of those places! Best of luck with your interior design business! And have fun at market — this is the first one we’ve missed and I’m kind of sad about it!

  218. You are an inspiration and I see great things ahead for you. Wishing you all the best. 🙂

  219. It feels a little sad that your store is closing, but I hope it means great opportunities for you in the future. Have fun dreaming!

  220. This must be incredibly hard, and I ache for you. But your faith and spirit is encouraging and inspiring. My prayers are with you!

  221. Big hugs to you and B! I know you guys will find a way because you definitely have that powerful will. 😉

  222. This is the first time I’m writing a comment to one of your posts. I always loved the way you write but this takes it to a whole new level. This was sincere, personal and inspirational to me (even though you think that it’s not) Letting go is a different type of growing; accepting you don’t always have to achieve or win gets a huge weight off your shoulders. Go with the flow. I’m sure you (and I) will do great in our own areas.
P.S: I truely loved the pic you posted to instagram. You made me have an a-ha moment

I love how positive you are and I’m 100% sure that with your next venture you are going to go places you never even imagined. I just know it. All the best. Way to go girl.

  231. Kendi, you are such an inspiration. I have no doubt that you and your hubby will follow your wise intuition and it will lead to amazing new opportunities. As you know, the very best things take time…sometime an uncomfortably long time…but in the end it always becomes clear. I love Oprah’s wise words, and I love the way they guided you in this time of uncertainty.
Many blessings to you as the future of Bloom unfolds!

  234. Sounds like a tough situation so am glad to hear how optimistic you guys are 🙂 Now please start doing international shipping! 🙂

  235. I have never commented before but what an inspirational post! So sorry to hear the business is closing but your courage and honesty and hard work are extremely inspiring and impressive and I really wish you the best of luck in your future ventures, which will inevitably be fantastic!

  236. Kendi, clearly you have quite the following, and simply because you show your human spirit, all of it. I think you have shared every motion on this blog. It is super fun to check out your latest outfit, but it is also insightful to see a young person pursing their dreams and sharing all the many obstacles too. Remember, as one door closes, another will always open. Take the leap…you will be glad you did! With your talent and hardworking nature, you and B, will bump into even more success.

  237. Sad that your store front is closing, but love the optimism that you’re facing the uncertainty with. Good luck…you and B will do great 🙂 As Sandra Bullock said at the end of Hope Floats, “Beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it’s
the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find
yourself at a new beginning. Just give hope a chance to float up. And it
    will, too…”

  238. Wow, I’m so sorry to hear that your storefront is closing. But I will say this: you are so brave and strong. First, to open up your boutique and now to move on to the next leg of your journey, essentially blind. I’m a compulsive planner so the thought of not knowing what’s next would terrify me. I mean, I guess you never really know what’s going to happen next, but I like my little dream world where I can plan it all out. 😉 You’re an inspiration to many in a lot more ways that you probably know. Keep your chin up. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

  239. Come to Denton; we’d love to have you here! It’s Austin-funky-weird with the same cute downtown square. And you would be driving against traffic, until you moved. 😉

  240. Kendi, Thank you SO much for sharing this honest post! The internet is a happy, smiley place, and I think sometimes people lose sight of the real world that’s on the other side. There’s a lot of pressure for style bloggers in particular to have these Instagram perfect lives, but that’s just not reality. Although I’m sure you’ve had your share of ugly cries (as you should), you are approaching this major life change with such amazing perspective. I keep thinking of a quote from that 90s song Closing Time: “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Can’t wait to see where life takes you (and B!) next!

  241. Kendi, i'm ne of those silent readers who never comments. I couldnt resist myself this time. You are such an inspiration. I love how positive you are and I'm 100% sure that with your next venture you are going to go places you never even imagined. I just know it. All the best. Way to go girl.

  242. Nicely put. I know that with your optimism good things are going to happen. Can’t wait to see what the future has in store. 🙂

  243. Oh Kendi! Thank you for your vulnerability and for sharing your heart on
here. I’m not going through anything like that, but I can relate to the
uncertainty of life. Your positive outlook is inspiring. I wish you and B the very best in what is to come.

  244. I wish you nothing but the best! You have a such a great attitude about this and that can’t always be easy. Life is hard. I’m sorry this is the situation for you, but I know that you will survive and have even better things in your future. I’ve been watching a lot of basketball (march madness you know) so the motto can apply here as well–survive and advance!

  245. When I first started reading this post my throat closed up. I can imagine what a difficult journey this has been, but it’s so nice to hear you be able to reflect on this all positively. It’s given me perspective. You are definitely an inspiration to me. Thank you for always being so genuine and for sharing in a real way. I’m in your corner.

  246. Oh Kendi, I must admit that I did the dramatic, only-seen-in-theatres-or-movies, “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” when I read your first sentence so yes, you sure do know how to open a blog post. I love how you see the positive in all of this and yes, you are right to pay attention to the pebbles. God doesn’t close a door and not open a window. I will definitely be coming by with my friends soon to see your beautiful shop! I hope I get to meet you! I support whatever decision you and your hubby make for bloom in the future. Thanks always for your humor and genuine spirit! I know God has big plans for you! XO

  247. Such grace! Well said, Kendi. Believing with you that the best is yet to come. Love your blog and I love the dress I have from Bloom!

  248. Dear Kendi, I follow a few fashion blogs, but yours is the only one I actually read. Your honest and transparent nature make for loyal readers and customers! Good luck on your new adventure. I can’t wait to see where your business goes!

  249. The best is yet to come! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for you next. Stay positive and many blessings to you and your husband.

  250. Kendi, you are such an inspiration. I have no doubt that you and your hubby will follow your wise intuition and it will lead to amazing new opportunities. As you know, the very best things take time…sometime an uncomfortably long time…but in the end it always becomes clear. I love Oprah's wise words, and I love the way they guided you in this time of uncertainty.
Many blessings to you as the future of Bloom unfolds!
    XO, Gina

  251. Kendi, I think you are a great person – it's not easy to go through this situation, but you do it, and you do it classy 😉
Thank you for sharing everything with us, you are truly amazing. Wish you and B the best and good luck with your online business – you might consider shipping your clothes to Brazil 🙂

  252. I can’t wait to see what you do next. I have huge admiration for your positive attitude right now and I have faith that the best is on its way for you and your hubby. Best of luck! You’re in my thoughts 🙂

  253. Sounds like a tough situation so am glad to hear how optimistic you guys are 🙂 Now please start doing international shipping! 🙂

  254. I have never commented before but what an inspirational post! So sorry to hear the business is closing but your courage and honesty and hard work are extremely inspiring and impressive and I really wish you the best of luck in your future ventures, which will inevitably be fantastic!

  256. Sad that your store front is closing, but love the optimism that you're facing the uncertainty with. Good luck…you and B will do great 🙂 As Sandra Bullock said at the end of Hope Floats, "Beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it's
the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find
yourself at a new beginning. Just give hope a chance to float up. And it
    will, too…"

  257. Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that your storefront is closing. But I will say this: you are so brave and strong. 258. I am certain your adventures will continue. You and your husband obviously have lots of talent! Wish you all the best and look forward to seeing what you do next!

  259. You are SO sweet, Jessie! Why did you not say hi!? I promise I don't bite. If you come into the shop today, please say something! I will probably be there this afternoon or at the local coffee shop Snug, so if you do stop in today or tomorrow I'll be at one of those places! Best of luck with your interior design business! And have fun at market — this is the first one we've missed and I'm kind of sad about it!

  260. Nap first, weekend/brunch second, vacation third. In that order 😉 Thanks for your encouragement!

And yes — almost three years!! I almost couldn't believe it either!

  261. Annie — THANK YOU. So kind. Also thank you for bringing up You've Got Mail. I told B the other day I totally feel like Kathleen Kelly except without the online dating profile, Fox Books, the twinkle lights and the twirling. And I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the beginning/end of small businesses. I mean obviously one part of our business is ending but you're right — we absolutely did it. I feel about 20 years older somedays just from the three years of experience I was given through this. I'm sure you'll understand this too — me and B while excited for about two Saturdays off I'm pretty sure we are NOT going to know what to do with ourselves.

Best of luck with your book store. I'm sure it is adorable. (Also, you're actually Kathleen Kelly now that I think about it… 😉

    Kendi

  262. If we can figure out international shipping we will definitely open it up to you! That was one of the first things B said when we were talking online only. :)Thanks for the encouragement, Samantha!

  270. Congratulations on closing your doors on a high note, that rarely happens. You will find the right path. Thank you for sharing this with the world. You are inspirational and adorable.

  271. Wow, Kendi. Just wow. This is by far one of the most poignant, beautifully written posts I’ve ever seen here on the blog. I’m at my office on my lunch break just in tears and with goosebumps. Someone should turn you into a fictional character and write a whole book about you! 🙂 Watching you hurdle through all of this over the years has been so wonderfully interesting and inspiring. It’s given people everywhere the opportunity to see the raw grit and determination that goes into throwing yourself at the things you are passionate about. Which I for one have loved reading about since day 1! (Well, it could have been day 400, I found you sometime in 2010 I believe). At any rate, keep at it girl, we’re all here rootin’ for ya!

  272. I wish B and you all the best, I’ve been following your blog for years all the way up here in New York. Your positive attitude is inspiring and I wish you all the best in your future! I know great things are to come!

  274. Hey, wish you the best in the future. That Oprah quote is pretty much life and business mixed together and what you’re going through, but heads up, ladies! There’s always a way to do things in this world, you just have to find them. Never give up and an opportunity will come, but remember that – never give up!! Best of luck!

  296. Kendi, this post is beautifully written. I’m sure this next life stage will be beautifully written in due course too. I love that Oprah quote. It’s making me think about what the whispers in my own life might be trying to say. Thank you for the new perspective. Wishing you and B all the very best with your ‘blooming’.

  299. Girl, my life has been up and down for the past 2 years. Everything from a house fire, losing my mom, and losing my day job. I’m here to tell you that life can become a complete mess sometimes but the best part about that is that just like when your closet or room is a mess you can clean it up and discover things you never even knew you had and see it in a whole new light. I know that something wonderful is coming for your right about the corner and I can’t wait to read about it.

  300. Your grace and optimism is so inspiring, Kendi. Thank you for sharing your experience with such candor, as the open door of possibility can be so terrifying and overwhelming. Your strength might very well be another’s whisper or pebble….

Cheers to you and B and your next flower to bloom.

  301. Congratulations on your next life adventure! I can’t wait to read about it here, and I wish you all the best!

  302. I think you captured perfectly the ups and downs of owning a small business – often, especially in blog world, we only see the highlights and the success stories, the little victories, the celebrations. And yet, there’s the other side that’s not so often documented – the tears, sweat, dead ends, failures. So thank you for sharing your story so honestly. I have faith that you and your husband will figure out what is best for bloom and for ourselves. Best wishes!

  303. Your attitude toward building, growing, maintaining, and changing your business has always, and continues to be inspirational. You & Brian will get through this as you have so many other challenges. Thank you for being so brave to share your world with all of us.

  310. So excited for this oppty for bloom. Sometimes it’s painful when the winds change, but just remember that this is only the beginning! Congratulations on making it to exactly where you’re supposed to be 😉

  313. doors never close forever; they re-open and sometimes swing. It will all be ok. I feel it. Bloom will bloom once again..bigger and brighter than ever!

  314. I find that we are in a similar situation with my husband going thru a job change. And while there was shock at first, there is a certain thrill now. And this post is inspiring…with it’s reality, with it’s honesty, with the promise of something new around the corner for you and your husband. The best of luck to you both as you embark on something new.

  317. I will miss Bloom. It’s now a tradition that when I’m in Texas visiting my family, we go to Bloom! I was always able to justify spending more money than I really had at your store (supporting a small business and one of my fave bloggers). 🙂 So many of my favorite pieces came from Bloom (In fact, it’s just now warming up enough wear I live to wear my most special leopard print coat that I’m so obsessed with). It’s been so special to me. Best of luck, Kendi!

  318. Waited a few days for the dust to settle on this post before I commented. I’ve been following you for years, through my own little dabble into fashion blogging and back again. I remember when you first opened bloom, I was so excited and you truly inspired me. I remember saying aloud to many and to myself, “I want to open up my own shop.” — and a year or two later I did. And only 15 months after that (yesterday to be exact.) we closed the doors to our shop. It has been an emotional roller-coaster this past month. Like you, we have plans to keep it alive online and now we’ve found a small space inside of another shop to carry our “brand” — but the loss of a store front in a fun unique district in downtown Oklahoma City, is really digging at me. It feels like I’ve had a tiny piece of my identity removed. Who am I if I’m not the owner of this shop? If I’m not a fun and quirky “business owner/shop girl” in this eclectic neighborhood? Though I only had the experience for a short time, it was during the most tumultuous period in my life (a hasty divorce, family death and a tornado that rocked our little city and my very core.) and it kept me grounded. The stress of running the shop was the only thing that has kept me sane in this decision. It was too much for us to handle, and the immense weight of it lifting off of us was a really great feeling.

The thing I wanted to share with you that many of my friends have shared with me these past few weeks is that life goes on of course, but you and B’s driven spirit and natural knack for doing amazing shit is what will rise up out of this. It’s not like this was your one chance to be awesome and now it’s gone, you have a load of experience and drive under your belts now and you will use that do even more amazing things.

  321. i love where you’ve landed on this, it’s the perfect attitude. blogging – indeed, the internet retail world – is a brand new medium. blast its face off while it’s still being formed!

(and if a pop up shop makes it up to vancouver, so much the better…)

  323. I am a young business student, just 17, who dreams to own her own business one day and you have no idea how much you’ve inspired me Kendi. I really look up to you and I am so sorry to hear this happened to you, but I am absolutely positive you will make it through this, just like you have made it through so many seemingly impossible situations before.
There are many. many fashion bloggers out there but this is the one blog I often find myself reaching out to again and again. Not only am I completely mind-blown by your creative outfits, but something about the way you keep real always draws me here. I feel like bloom is so close to my heart and like I’ve made this journey with you, and I don’t even know what I intended to say when I started typing this out but I guess I’ve drifted off completely haha. I’ll just say you’re an amazing woman Kendi, and I love seeing you do all of these amazing things, you never cease to amaze me. I am sure God has his plans for you xx

  325. OK, I am on the other side of the world in Australia, but you have inspired me with your outlook and beautiful outfits. Good luck with the business – I think the title of your post ‘bloom where you are planted’ is very fitting and I know you will continue to thrive. Thanks for the daily fashion inspiration. Really, I mean that, as a very busy working mum who has little or no time to shop (unless you count desperate online purchases), you have helped me look at my existing wardrobe in a completely different way – my husband and our bank account thank you for that!

  326. I love you guys so much and this is by far my favorite clothing store on the square!! You dresses me from head to toe for my wedding events and honeymoon last year. I always feel so welcome when coming in and you guys really know how to make someone feel good about themselves and want to buy everything in your store! I have enjoyedy quick pop ins while I am In between clients talking with you and browsing the store. You are such an inspiration for all small business owners and I know you will do great things. You will be GREATLY missed! I am crying after reading this post. I want you to discover something wonderful in your lives but I won’t lie, I hope you come back to the square with a new bloom!! I love you guys! And I LOVE your store. It’s truly the best! I tell everyone about you! Good luck! Xoxo

  327. OK, I am on the other side of the world in Australia, but you have inspired me with your outlook and beautiful outfits. Good luck with the business – I think the title of your post 'bloom where you are planted' is very fitting and I know you will continue to thrive. Thanks for the daily fashion inspiration. Really, I mean that, as a very busy working mum who has little or no time to shop (unless you count desperate online purchases), you have helped me look at my existing wardrobe in a completely different way – my husband and our bank account thank you for that!

  329. Wow, what a refreshing perspective. I can’t imagine how difficult this decision must have been, but the fact that you’ve come to the mindset behind this post is so inspiring. To be honest, I think I find this actually more inspiring than if things had continued as they were. Seeing people deal with real life challenges as tough as this with such elegance is beyond inspiring. I think your decision to surrender and be okay with the uncertainty will eventually blossom (or should I say bloom 😉 ) into something more clear and something even greater. I have absolute faith in you guys. Nothing but my best wishes! <3

  330. Have you guys looked into Adriatica? I will make sure to stop by before you close!!! I’m not really a boutique girl and feel weird stepping into one because I don’t have that kind of money. But I loved walking by your shop and the one time I got to step into it! It was adorable!

  333. Thinking about you Kendi and Bryan! I know this wasn’t an easy process. I’m so excited to see the future of bloom. I know it will be an amazing one. You are both so passionate and driven and you’ve been able to do so much already. I agree this is not the end but a new beginning. Can’t wait to see what happens next! (And by travel I hope you mean travel to California where we can wear light scarves, drink spiked lemonade and work on our tans!)

  335. You continue to be an inspiration Kendi. Go on and bloom wherever you’re planted my friend. The sky’s the limit!

  336. I love how you share these types of challenges on the blog. It’s comforting to know that other’s go through struggles, even when they make it look amazing (as you do!) on the blog 🙂

  350. Kendi–I saw your picture on Instagram saying it was your last day at Bloom and had to come to your blog and search out the explanation. Although I’m not a daily reader (terrible to admit?) I have followed you along lightly for years, and alway keeping up through a quick Instagram check.

I’m so sorry to hear this news, and to hear you were growing every month and getting along and living your dream, ultimately!

My parents owned their own business for 20 years and every night at the dinner table it seemed that conversation was always centred around the business, the stress, the making it work and making ends meat. I can see, from an outsiders view, sort of, how hard it must be and what a toll it would take on a marriage–my parents always said, ‘You have to be a special kind of a couple to be able to work together (and live together)’. Obviously, you and B are just that.

Hoping you have a wonderful last day at the shop, GOOD LUCK with the coming days and hopefully it involves a few more bottles of wine than tears. Like you said, you’re listening for the whispers and being optimistic and although there are always times of worry and sadness (and confusion), you’re so strong to share this, go through this and even start a business in the first place!! You have already taken leaps and bounds that others wouldn’t even dream to do simply out of fear and that, my friend, is very admirable.

Thinking of you and sending a BIG HUG from Ottawa, Canada.

  351. Wow… Love this post! This only means there is something better out there for you..

  352. I’m really sorry to hear this Kendi but good for you for staying positive. Oprah’s right. The universe does speak to us in whispers and when one door closes many more fabulous ones open. I love that you spoke about life giving you lemons, you add Vodka. That’s how I got the title of my blog: Vodka Infused Lemonade. My husband had been laid off of work and things were crappy and that’s how I came to the title. Good luck Kendi and looking forward to reading all about your new adventure, where ever it may take you.

    Agi:)

  353. I am astounded that a successful business like yours can’t find premises. I hope you find a solution soon.
