Having a Moment: Furry Jackets

posted on: 2/06/2014

It is somehow snowing here in Texas and while I just bought a few pretty new spring dresses, I'm having to reluctantly reach for my coat and boots yet again. As I looked to pinterest this morning for some cold weather outfit inspo, I noticed just how many big furry jackets  I've pinned this winter. This discovery brings back fine memories of my own white faux fur jacket I proudly wore to Sunday School as a 5 year old. (I'm 100% sure I looked like a tiny cotton ball with legs.)  Now, 24 years later, faux fur is back and it's perfectly acceptable to wear it any day or way you'd like. That's something I can get behind, especially on a snow day.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7

I like to call these fine pieces of outerwear 'muppet jackets' because you can't help but look like a muppet in one of them. This is a positive thing, trust me. If I could be a muppet every day of my life, I would. (Again, 5 year old Kendi is thrilled with how style in 2014 is turning out.)

So, what are your thoughts? Yay or cray on this furry trend this winter?

Omg no!!! My parents bought me a rabbit coat when I was 5...I remember because I wore it to church on Easter Sunday. It literally shed everywhere, made me look like a cotton ball, and I cried the whole day. Faux fur...maybe. I've been considering a faux fur vest to wear over my denim shirt; but one thing is for sure, you can't tell a 5-year old she's wearing a bunny and expect everything to be okay.

  2. I'm a mom of 5. I'm home most days, casual is my uniform. This summer I was at a yard sale of some older ladies and saw the most beautiful faux fur coat. It fit me like a glove. I have never, ever thought of myself as someone who would wear fur but I totally fell in love with it. It is hits me mid calf and has a bit of a flare to it. I've only worn it a couple of times being dressed up for the holidays, but I love the look of it styled casual with jeans, I just haven't had the guts to do it yet!!

  8. Ah I want to wear all these outfits! I love the look of faux fur, but I get so intimidated by them. So big and bulky and I get nervous about the washing process. But I do think it's a luxe look.

  9. Totally love the look of them! You can totally rock it! I just think I would keep it in my closet and not have to guts to wear it out. Ok so maybe I'd dance around the house in it.

  11. I tend to fall into the "nothing is too crazy for me to wear" category, so I say yay! ;) But, I love the white one in the middle. Have a great snow day!

  18. My feeling on the muppet jacket are mixed. On one hand I want to snuggle up in one right this second. On the other hand, why am I not wearing one right now? Oh, wait, that's not so mixed after all.

  20. I say nay. I can't imagine the pain of trying to clean a coat like that! I'll stick to my bright colored peacoat instead :) And long black puffer jacket for super cold days. When it's really cold out, it's more about practicality than fun :(

  23. me, too, love the furry coats. however, i've yet to try one without looking "BIG" or ridiculous. It's such a statement piece that requires a solid confidence and outsized personality to tame it. besides, the quality needs to be top notch or it'd look cheap. and everything else has to be toned down.

  24. I have a black coat I call a muppet coat! I try to wear all the time. I usually talk myself out of wearing to the gym.

  25. I am really having a moment with faux fur! It's too warm where I live for the coats, but I love the faux fur vests!

  28. I love the faux fur jackets!!! Hilarious that you call them muppet jackets! I live in Florida & was at the mall the other day trying to justify to myself that I could use a beautiful cobalt blue muppet jacket from topshop...while was I silently justifying to myself two men walked past & made fun of the muppet...well of course I had to turn & give a dirty stare...as I did so I happen to glance at them & their feet...they had on flip flops...& their jeans indicated that they were not headed for the beach or a pool. Not a fan of flip flips on men...especially out as a causal shoe!
