My hair has some explaining to do. I struggle to grow it out for two years and now I cut it and it grows like an inch in the last three weeks. Someone explain that to me, please.

Yes, this skirt is practically neon. Like I could walk down the street at night and light up the sidewalk it’s that bright. But in the best way possible. I was so glad that we had a bit of a break from the cold so that I could wear this without tights, but tonight the nice weather ends again for a while. Goodbye to bare legs for now. (Is it just me or do tights sometimes mess up an outfit? I’m kind of just a black tights only girl now and I feel like most outfits just look better without them. Thoughts?)
This week I’m at market for bloom, which reminds me to remind you that I have been reminded about the promised Shop Girl posts. I’m working on them, I promise. You explain to me how my hair grows so fast when I don’t want it to and I’ll explain how to run a business to you. Deal?

  1. Agreed about the tight dilemma (and I live in Wisconsin…) I want to like dresses/skirts with tights in the winter, but I always end up feeling like they ruin a perfectly good outfit. Stupid static cling.

  2. Oh this is just the sight I needed on a very cold, negative degree and snowy evening where I live. Longing for spring so badly and this skirt is the perfect pick me up. I think this is the first time I’ve seen neon done in a very delicate, feminine way. Usually it’s very modern…this is amazing!

  3. The top photo is perfect…your expression, the way the outfit is showcased (the skirt is the best), the street blur. How are you actually taking a photo in what looks like the middle of the street? lol

  4. Supposedly, cutting your hair actually does make it grow faster. Most people’s hair has a “stopping point” and it doesn’t grow much past that point…. however it grows quickly until it gets to that point, then slows down. The woman who cuts my hair told me this… so it could be true or completely made up. I chose to believe it 🙂

  5. Love this skirt but think the necklace really finishes it all off beautifully. Such a great blog, Kendi. Look forward to your updates everyday.

  6. Couldn’t agree more about the tights. I’ve been wanting to wear this midi wool skirt I have but tights would look just god awful with it! Next time we get warm weather here in Savannah, GA I work in that skirt! You look fabulous and I still love your haircut!

  7. Ugh…I wish it was warm enough here to wear something that cute! I also wish I could pull off neon without feeling self conscious!

  8. Answer: hair doesn’t care what we want. It has no consideration for our goals. That’s why my bangs grow to my nose within a week of a trim yet the rest of my hair has remained the same length for eons.
    P. S. tights ruin everything

  9. I totally agree about the tights. Sometimes I plan an outfit around tights and it totally works, but adding them in for cold legs just messes up the whole looks. The style is in the details for sure!

  10. I love this outfit! So simple and lovely – you’re right that tights would have ruined it. And someone once told me your hair grows more with frequent trims? So maybe that’s true and you just had a little growth spurt lol I love your short hair!

  11. I would love bare leg outfits more, but in the winter I just surrender when it comes to shaving my legs. So. Tights for me, it is. I love this outfit – so classy and not stuffy at all because of the neon and the silhouettes!

  12. I love the neon!!

I wish I had the same problems as you with my hair. I feel like I struggle to grow it out for years, then I cut it, and then it takes FOREVER to grow back.

  13. Yes I mainly stick to black tights and often much prefer the outfit without them! I’ve gone bare legged the last two days and loved it! Great skirt, it’s really bright but I like it 🙂

  17. You look terrific, Kendi. The skirt is the best length for you and I love your new hairstyle. You look sophisticated, stylish and classy.

    P. S. tights ruin everything

  21. I’m having the same problem with my hair. My stylist says the first two cuts after going from long to short your hair will grow like a weed, but after that it should slow down. Also, I think it’s more noticeable when it’s short.

    PS Love your blog!

  22. Oh it will grow FAST the first few cuts. A few years back I chopped off 13 inches and my bob was entirely too difficult to maintain. The neon skirt is incredible! Saw it this morning on instagram and had to come here to see the rest. I love the neon and I agree that tights ruin everything. I also think they make everything look “cute” like dainty. conflict…

  23. Such a gorgeous skirt! I wish I had the option to go bare-legged here in Minnesota! The high today is supposed to be -6! What?! I’ll be throwing on as many layers as I can! Can’t wait for spring! 🙂

  25. I don’t typically write comments, but that first photo stopped me in my tracks. It’s spectacular. The styling, the pose, the expression. One in a million.

  26. I have been growing my hair out for 3 years and it’s barely past my shoulders and full of frizz because I haven’t had a trim in 5 months. And just when I think about chopping it off, I have the best hair day ever. Soft curls, full of life. What gives? I will never understand hair. But one thing I do know, is that this new ‘do of yours is so cute!

  27. You look stunning! I love the edgier vibe you’ve been sporting lately…I’ve been reading for a few years and you come across as very authentic, which is the truest way to be classy, I think! Happy Thursday!

  28. I’m a black tights girl all the way, ask me in the end of summer/early fall and I’ll tell you they’re sexy as hell! Ask me at the end of January/early February and I’ll say they’re the most horrible thing ever invented!!! Just be thankful you live in a warm enough climate that you get mini breaks in the weather. Tights until at least end of March for this Michigan girl! 🙁

  29. that skirt is absolute perfection. i completely agree about tights. i also find myself only able to rock black tights, even tho i think colorful tights look adorable on other girls. i have flashbacks of my child hood spent in pink tights with red hearts and the sophisticated woman i am won’t allow it 😉 but seriously, most of my outfits would be ruined by drab black tights.

  32. From by one uni bio class: your hair actually has a natural length, and once it reaches that length it will slow in growth. Also, the hairs on your head grow at different rates, with some hairs growing in a different cycle than others.

TL;DR: hair is biologically maddening and is difficult to control by nature.

  35. I love tights just as much as you – I can’t wait for Spring to arrive so I can start wearing skirts/dresses without tights! Love this neon look on your – that skirt and necklace are beautiful – and love the touches of black.

  36. I’ve always been told that hair breaks off faster than it grows, so if you go too long between trims or don’t trim enough, it will seem like it never grows. With a cut that drastic, you’ve cut off anything that was breaking and have fresh, healthy ends. Don’t know if it’s true, but seems logical.

  44. Love the skirt!!! Also, hair does go through it’s own sort of growth spurt but I bet that since you’ve cut your hair you’ve been touching your hair more.. and that also stimulates hair growth… so if you want your hair to grow, have your husband play with your hair before bed and boom! Instant insomnia cure and your hair most likely will grow more… also, I fully agree that sometimes tights just are not a winner… you look great however and props for baring your legs in winter!

  47. I can totally relate to the hair!! I just got bangs & already feel like they are in my eyes!!! Why is it that hair never does what we want it to ?!
Cute skirt! I live in Florida & we are currently experiencing some chilly weather…apparently over the next week we are going to experience some all time lows….perfect…
Time to invest in more sweaters : ) I love a good shopping justification!!

  48. Black tights only is a bit elitist in MN, so I hope the idea of keeping limbs intact offsets and ideas about nude tights.

  49. Hey Kendi, I live in South Dakota. Today the temperature is literally -20 with windchill. Up here, bare legs are not in existence from late October to Early April. Tights are a necessity and a major part of my outfits. I don’t love them and they can be difficult to style, but it’s too cold to go without! I just consider it an extra challenge to work them into my wardrobe. Best of luck and if you need any advice, let me know!

  52. You are a breath of fresh air in this outfit K! Love that neon skirt, don’t care how bright it is or if you can light up the whole street, is so so hot! On tights I think they are great, they make wearing dresses or skirts possible during winter, although I agree sometimes they kind of ruin outfits, I can’t imagine this one with black tights, it would be too much. On hair? oh man! Wish I had an answer for this one, can’t understand either! Have a wonderful time market shopping!

  55. Love this outfit!!! And totally jealous of your warmth – negative five today round these parts 😉 I see what you’re saying with tights, but when I did the Dressember campaign (wearing a dress every day of the month of December) I HAD to wear tights to not freeze, and now I think I prefer them! I own almost every color of the rainbow, and some cute patterned ones too! They can add a nice pop 🙂

  65. Fellow Texan here, from the other side of the metroplex. You look adorable, and tights would have ruined that outfit. I love tights most of the time. Any ideas on what color tights to wear with a burgundy skirt and brown boots? I’m thinking brown.
On your hair, yes it probably seemed as if it wasn’t growing when it was long, because of breakage. You’ve given all the ends a nice pruning, so it’s now growing like a rose. It’s also shorter and in a definite style, so you notice it more. I once was a hairdresser. I told clients with long hair to see me every 8 weeks, short styles to see me every 6 weeks, and super short styles to come back in 4 .
Now, how about those business posts. 🙂

  71. Tights mess up an outfit A LOT! I live (and teach) in Kuwait…my school is pretty strict about my skirts touching my knees. If they don’t, I have to wear tights (that aren’t sheer) or leggings. Pencil skirts (and lots of other skirts) just don’t always look quite as fabulous with tights or leggings. My closet has so much potential…but my silly knees are just too sexy! 😉
