Sometimes internet cute is different than real life cute when it comes to my outfits. If it’s internet cute but people give me a weird look in real life, it means that I’m wearing a lot of color, pattern, my shoes are too high, my bun is too large, etc. I figured this outfit would be one of those where it translates well in photos but people think I’m silly in person. However, with this outfit, I was wrong. I received a few compliments the day I wore this and outfit compliments in real life are rare unless I see my mother or the sweet man that works at a deli in town. He loves my bright colors, I love his sandwiches.
All that to say, it makes me proud that perhaps mixed prints like polka dots and stripes are making their way into the mainstream (or rather the main streets.) That or I’ve worn people down enough in this town that they feel sorry for me and just send random compliments my way. Either way, I’ll take it.

  1. I love the stripes and dots. Well done with the bold use of pattern! I’d compliment you in real life, too!

  2. I think this outfit is super cute in photos and probably even cute in person… i love the mix of polka dots and stripes, and the little pink is just perfect!

  3. I’m sure this outfit is also so cute in person. I get what your saying about how an outfit can be Internet cute but then in re real-world, people think you’re nuts. Kudos to you for wearing it anyways! Love the pink belt for a pop of color

  4. I know exactly what you mean! sometimes outfits that look cute in real life look totally boring in pictures. But on the flip side outfits that look good in pictures can sometimes look over the top in real life. Anyhow regardless of pictures or real life, I love this outfit. I love how you mixed the two black and white prints but they don’t clash whatsoever and I love the pop of pink you added with the belt!

  5. I love this post because its so true! I think the best way to bridge the gap between Internet and real life cute is bold patterns in neutral colors like you are doing here. Love it

    1. Is that to say that Kendi shouldn’t be a real person with ups and downs in life like the rest of us? Personally I find that refreshing.

  6. Thats how I feel about at least half the outfits I put on my blog. Luckily in NYC, though, there tend to be far stranger things than my over-sized flower pins, mixing prints & obnoxious colors!

  7. this does look real life and internet cute! i know what you’re saying though. i paired some prints the other day that i think made other people uncomfortable. i try to avoid it at work… no one is ready… yet!

  8. I think keeping it black and white keeps it classic. If you had done this with say, red and white you probably would have gotten a few looks!
I don’t photograph my outfits every day and I still get looks on the street for my choices. At least you have a style blog as an excuse!

  9. i know what you mean though…sometimes i see an outfit on a fashion blog and think that its super cute, but that no way would i ever wear it. i always find your style cute and relevent – this outfit is no exception! love it 🙂

  11. I thought it was just me thinking I could never wear anything I see on blogs and that all those bloggers lived in better places where you can. You’ve solved the mysterie.
And, I’m só jealous you’re in bare legs. It’s 10 degrees Celcius over here. Scarfs and boots it is. So done with it

  12. I think you put together a great outfit but I guess you are used to reading compliments. I really like how polka dots and stripes look together. Adding the pink belt helped unify the outfit. I don’t know if that makes sense lol. The bottom line is you look great! 🙂

  13. Yes, you are so right! Some of the most popular “blog outfits” can get you some strange looks in the preschool pick up line or from Grandma’s:) I LOVE this one on you, you are an inspiration for real dressing that always looks put together and current.

  14. I love this outfit and the mixing of patterns. It can be hard sometimes to leave the house and feel confident when people are looking at you like you’re crazy. As long as you feel pretty is what you are wearing, that’s all that matters. Love the polka dot skirt.

  15. I love mixed patterns and think this outfit is adorable. And I agree about how there is sometimes a difference between “internet cute” and “real life cute.” Sometimes when I follow the trends I see on blogs, which I love, I get some pretty weird comments and stares in real life. (There were a few people who didn’t understand my big, nerdy glasses, which are one of my favorite things!) I guess balance is key. : ) Oh, well. Such is life!

  16. I definitely know what you mean. Some of the outfits I sport in my office either people can’t get enough of or they’re giving me strange looks. I rather like the strange looks though; makes me feel like I took a chance!

very nice pattern mixing! i actually did pattern mixing on my blog today too. would love it if you’d stop by. =)

  18. Bahaha, YES, internet cute and real life cute can sometimes be two very different things, but it always feels like such a WIN when an outfit is both!! I adore the print mixing here, and the touch of pale pink makes it so sweet and feminine!

  19. I love that you paired dots and stripes in the same colors and the pop of pink is perfect. Although it’s been done a million times I love pink black and white together!

I totally get what you mean with the real life compliments too… There’s something about dressing “like a blogger” that some people just don’t get, seems like especially in the South. Good thing you rock your looks so well!

  23. This outfit is perfection! Stripes and polka go together like cookies and milk. I love love this look. I want that skirt (and the dress version too).

Sometimes I get looks about my outfits, but I realize I am much more fashionable than a lot of the people in Mississippi, so I like to pretend they are just jealous 🙂

  24. I hear you. I blog (and wear!) only real-life outfits, so I do feel like I’m pretty boring in comparison to people who actually take risks and incorporate a lot more creativity in their style. This is real-life cute. I would wear something *similar* in real life, but I’d go for a pump and a longer skirt (32 = too old for really short skirts).

  25. I know what you mean. I have once or twice taken pictures of an outfit solely to blog, because I’m too chicken to wear it in real life.
But this outfit is good for the blog AND real life. I love the pattern mixing!

  26. Love this look! I totally know what you mean about things translating better in pictures, maybe the people in my area are just super conservative, but I tend to get a lot of weird looks too!

P.S. I just bought the Target version of your shoes, so I’m super excited to see that there is a higher end version of the same thing!

  27. Love this outfit so much! It’s always those outfits that you think you would never get compliments on that people compliment you all day. Or you wore a piece that you’ve worn a bajillion times before, and all of the sudden, even one and their mom is commenting on how cute your beat up coral sandals are from last summer.

  28. Congratulations on the real-life compliment. I had the opposite experience last week–multiple compliments on my outfit in real life, then put it up on the blog and thought, “What the…? I look like I got dressed in the dark!!”
For the record, I would have complimented you on your pattern-mixing as well. What can I say? I’m powerless when it comes to polka dots.

  29. I love this outfit – SO much in fact that I’m gonna have to run to Target and J.Crew to recreate it… like now. And although I do feel ya on the whole “internet cute vs. real life cute”, at the end of the day, as long as you like it, that’s all the matters, right? 😉

  30. I love the stripes and dots. Well done with the bold use of pattern! I'd compliment you in real life, too!

  39. I teach at a community college, and today one of my students asked me if I thought mixing stripes and polka dots was okay because, as she put it, “You seem more into fashion than me.”

Turns out her 7 year old daughter is starting to dress herself in the wackiest outfits and color combos, and while she wants to be supportive as a mother, she also worried her daughter might get made fun of at school.

I told her it was perfectly okay to mix, in fact it’s often encouraged in young girls…and I think I’ll have to show her this outfit during our next class to prove it can be done…and done well!
