While we were snapping photos, my husband made the remark that this was my “tough Kendi” outfit. If I over-analyze and think about this too long like I typically do with things he says, I’m not sure how to take this. For one, my jacket is pleather. My dress is the softest sweatshirt material. My scarf has cute caricature drawings of cities. The gold chains on my purse? Plastic.

So really, if you think about it, this outfit isn’t tough at all. And I’m a softie. I mean this is as tough as I get — ohhhh. I see what he meant now. Over-anlyzation complete.

  1. Love the outfit and I totally agree with your husband. Just by looking at the outfit you would never know the dress is super soft and the jacket it pleather. It totally looks tough because of the boots. Great outfit.

  2. I love the striped socks peeking out of the booties.

  3. Tough Kendi works! I have that problem a lot too. In college, we had a “goth night” at a local bar where you could get in for free for dressing all in black or “goth-like.” So one night, I showed up at the bar with friends wearing all the black clothes I had…and the bouncer said I looked like a teacher. Buzz kill…but at least I got in for free! I still get told that all the time, too…but now I actually AM a teacher, so it doesn’t feel too bad.

  4. Any chance you’d do a post on how you curl your hair and how you do your makeup?? You always look so perfectly put together and now that I know your hair is naturally straight (from an earlier post) and that you curl it to look as it does here, I’d love some tips! I can never get curls like this- they are either too tight or too loose. You’re gorgeous! (and tough!) πŸ˜‰

  5. Love your dress and I have the same booties…i’ve been living in them!

  8. Maybe not a tough outfit – but perhaps a little more edgy than your usual feminine looks. Looks great!

  9. *love* the booties!
crewcuts made a very similar sweatshirt fleece dress for wee-ones that my 5yo wears as part of her uniform!Β  maybe I should get this madewell one so that she and i can be twinsies, like those old-school JCPenny catalogs with the mother-daughter matching Easter ensembles πŸ˜€

  10. This is exactly like me – I’m not an edgy dresser, but every once in a while I like to throw on pieces that are a little more tough/less classic.Β  You’ve struck the perfect balance with this one and I love the idea of striped socks peeking out from under the ankle boots! πŸ™‚

  11. I think it’s that you are wearing a lot of black leather/pleather and the grey is not overly femme.Β  I LOVE the look… this one is just a bit edgier than what you usually wear methinks. I wore red, blue and yellow and my husband said I looked like a beach ball!! how’s that for commentary?!Β

  12. Having major bare-leg envy seeing these lovely photos! Especially since we’re getting blizzard-ed in here in NH!!

  13. I love tough Kendi! Too funny – I also wrote about my only “edgy” outfit today. It consists of black leather boots, a black leather purse and…a dress covered in bows. So I totally get the “as tough as I get” feeling!

  16. I love the feminine scarf and dress with the hard edge of all your leather pieces. You’re so great at creating a contrast in each outfit- I love it!

  43. Hi Kendi! Love the boots and socks πŸ™‚ they’re darling together… also, can I just say that I adore that even though you’re a HUGELY popular blogger, I adore the fact that you still wear things from Target and places where us “normal” bloggers shop too πŸ™‚ I can’t tell you how frustrating it is when I see bloggers dressed in head to toe designer brands. How is that relatable? Anyway, I just love you. Have an awesome weekend!
