Something about being out of an office setting makes me suddenly feel very dressed up in a skirt. When I would go to my 9 to 5 every day, a skirt was a no-brainer. I almost felt sloppy in pants (because of the impending wrinkles that would occur while sitting all day), so typically all I would wear was a skirt or a dress. But these days I feel like I should be going to the Oscars whenever I put a skirt  or dress on (hence the amount of pants I wear). And yes, this is what I would wear if I was attending the Oscars. Fancy, no? Who am I wearing? Old Navy.
I used to wear wrap skirts when I was a little girl and they would fascinate me. Mainly because the ones I wore had spandex shorts built into them. This meant no activity was out of question — if I wanted to play kickball or go down a hot metal slide, then the sky was the limit. Maybe that’s my issue with skirts now — if only they had biker shorts built in, then I’d start wearing more of them.

  1. I know it! I know exactly what you mean. Unless its a summery little sundress or something, I feel way dressed UP in skirts.

I don’t know how to fix this.

  2. I feel the same way! When I was teaching, I was comfortable wearing skirts to work.I’m not anymore and now I always feel so overdressed when I wear skirts or dresses. But I am determined to start wearing them more anyway. I love your striped shirt with this outfit.

  3. OMG I had a NEON day glo three tiered skirt (orange, lime yellow, and pink) that had an elastic waistband and shorts underneath when i was about 8 or 9 that I was SO proud of. I feel the same about skirts, but you look perfectly casual and also ladylike at the same time! I love the color of the skirt… Gorgeous! Also, question- do you miss your long hair? Mine is long but I am dying to chop it to about the length you have it. I am worried I will regret…

  4. Confession: I wear booty shorts underneath my skirts and dresses about 90% of the time. Even long ones. It just helps me feel more clothed or something. I’m 26.

  5. I absolutely love your outfit, I’m a huge fan of the nautical style and you’ve teamed your colours up really well. I actually love this colour combination; I have an orange coat and a cobalt blue scarf that go GREAT together.

  6. I love the cobalt and orange combination! I remember those skorts when I was little and I wish they would bring them back for adults because they were awesome! You could do whatever you needed in them without having to worry about flashing anyone. Those were the days!

  7. I’ve never been a big “skirt-wearer,” but it’s definitely a piece I want to try to work into my wardrobe more. I love how feminine they look and sometimes I’m just not feelin’ a dress, ya know? Haha.

PS. Love this combination. So cute.

  8. Totally agree! I wear my jeans a lot in the winter as the school run is cold and they can be dressed up with anything but if I wear a skirt I feel like I should be doing more with my day 😛 But I do love skirts.

  9. I’m wearing bike shorts under my dress right now.  I almost always do… Slides and kickball games, here I come!!

  10. Hahaha…that was the only way I would wear skirts as a kid!  I HATED skirts!  Now I’m like ‘office you’ … I kinda hate wearing pants to work!  Good look.  Love the pop or orange.

  11. I cheat and wear leggings or biker shorts under my skirts and dresses all the time. I’m tall and pretty active, so I have to be ‘safe’ when I’m on the floor pinning a hem or fitting an actor into something.

I’m all for the biker shorts as adults. Viva la wrap skirt!

  12. i love how you tie your outfits together with unexpected colors and patterns. it’s so whimsical! :))

  13. I think I have mentioned this before, but I want your hair…my iPad is going with me to my next appointment so I can pull up your blog!

  14. Lovely outfit.
I’m in love with stripes and polka dots at the moment. And you do they so well!

  15. i’m rather new to your blog, but i’ve noticed that you wear these uo shoes quite a bit.  are they comfortable?  i’m looking for a good pair of heels to wear with everything…skirts, pants, etc.  just wondering what you thought of them.

  16. I love the colors and the skirt. I was a wrap skirt girl too. They let me be girly and play hard all at the same time (^_^)

  17. I love this look – that wrap skirt is beautiful & the orange belt provides the perfect pop of contrasting color…so cute! 🙂

  18. Very cute combination! Love the electric blue with the orange touches…always a favorite! I find tulip-like skirts a bit tricky when I sit down…hard to keep them wrapped in place! Did you have a similar issue?
    Anyway, great look!

  19. a wonderful outfit, the skirt looks gorgeous on you! and I love your striped tee, I also recently bought two striped shirts.
Why did you change your url now that google is going to delete gfc for non blogspot sites? Or was it on purpose? Or is it just a rumor?

  20. Built in biker shorts make everything better, no?  Yet another truth of life delivered to me via the Internet.  I thank you.  😉

  21. So funny, I’m wearing this shirt today too and as I was getting dressed this morning I wondered if you still hate it. Great minds, I suppose 🙂

    1. Oops, I meant “still have it.” Haha, that changes the context of the sentence quite a bit!

  22. So true!….it’s hard being a lady who wants to go out and kick a ball around when you have to worry about your whoha showing. lol
    It’s tough being a girl!

  23. I just love all of your outfits! And I love that you write honestly about your fear of taking pictures in front of other people.  I need to come over to McKinney and see your store 🙂

  24. I am wearing also NAVY in my post today!!!! You look great with that nice skirt!!!

  25. I like it! I feel that way whenever i wear heels and a skirt..it makes me feel famous like i actually have somewhere to go!

  26. Yeah, I’m stuck in that 9 to 5 thing where skirts are the only solution to a comfortable day. But they still have their issues. The one in my post today prevented me from opening my legs far enough to take large enough strides to keep up with my husband, and also prevented me from easily getting in and out of cars. Another advantage to the biker shorts. 🙂

  27. Love the ensemble and the pops of orange (red?) from the belt and shoes. And skirts with biker shorts are definitely the answers to any awkward problems involving skirts.

  28. my problem with skirts: its still winter and my legs are pale. and probably still hairy from when i had no time to shave this morning.

    haha, great post!

  29. So pretty! Love that Old Navy top. I almost bought it- lol I should have since it seems to be so versatile! Love how you paired it with that skirt though!

  30. Love it! I used to wear biker shorts under every skirt when I was little. Maybe I’ll bring that back? I guess biker shorts are SPANX for kids.

  31. I feel the exact same way about skirts and dresses. I just feel like I can't do anything! Too much work sometimes. I love this skirt though. Gorgeous color!

  32. stunning as always! i love that you put an orange belt in the mix!

  33. Cute cute! I love this and can’t wait to start wearing dresses like this for my new job!! I’ve been MIA from here (and my blog) since I found out I got my dream library job!!!! YAY! Kendi – I’ve been following your blog for ages (Look! You brought out the classic red heels you’ve had forever!!!!) and now I finally get to pursue my dream career, too! You have been an inspiration – I hope I can pick up and start my journey as beautifully as you have!!! Keep up the cute outfits – is it sad that when I found out I got the job – my first reaction was, “YAY! I can finally wear all the pencil skirts sitting in my closet!!! Finally!!!!”  🙂

  34. love that skirt! and i know what you mean about being too dressed up … i would never wear dresses and skirts if i didn’t have a dress code at work

  35. The skirt is beautiful! I love the color and cut. And I agree with you!!! If all skirts had shorts built-in, I would wear them so much more often! haha

  36. I love the pop of color from the contrasts of bright blue and orange. So smart. I need to try this combo myself since I love color! Thanks for the inspiration.

  37. So cute! A little off topic, but not completely… I love your nail polish color. What is it? And I agree with the comment below, love your hair! I need a how to as well.  =)

  38. i have to concur with your skirt theory… or at least one side of it… i wish they´d come with built in shorts for comfort and safety! i always feel like i´m scared a strong wind will come and leave me bare naked and embarrassed! lol. i just got two striped tops from old navy and i´m also loving them!

  39. Orange and blue always works together so perfectly and I love how subtle it is here. Definitely going to have to go check out that shirt next time I hit up Old Navy.

  40. I have been buying skorts when I see them at thrift stores, They are a great summer option, I work at a church, but also with kid programs….having to go from meetings with the pastor to outdoor activities with 1st graders can be a fashion challenge!

  41. ooo i love the skirt, such an amazing blue! does it crease easily? with skirts, i tend to get paranoid after getting up from sitting down that i have creases EVERYwhere! so unladylike 😉

  42. I have become so attached to wearing tights under my skirts/dresses that in the summer when I can’t bear to wear them I am, in fact, much more often than not, wearing simple black shorts underneath! Then I don’t have to worry if it’s windy and my dress is light or if I happen to want to sit cross legged on the grass. I’ll admit I’ve had some funny looks when I do the later but I just laugh and explain, or just laugh.

  43. I <3 these pumps!  I never would have thought that bright coral shoes could be a neutral, but you inspired me to snag them from UO on clearance and I get multiple compliments every time I wear them!  Thanks!
