1. Rifle through your husband’s/boyfriend’s/roomate’s closet.
2. Find one that you really like, that’s just a few sizes too big for you. Make sure there is a type of natural fiber like wool or cashmere included in the line-up.
3. Offer to do a load of his laundry.
3. Toss into the dryer on high. Shrink the love out of it.
4. When he finds it folded in his closet, he’ll say something like “Remind me not to buy sweaters with wool in them they always shrink. Do you want this one?”
5. Nod your head innocently and take it.

And now you have a new sweater that fits perfectly. See, wasn’t that easy?

  1. I wish. Husband Mike guards his sweaters like a cranky gargoyle.

However, if YOU were nearby, I'd consider conking you on the head so I could steal that skirt!

  2. Hmm, after all my lecturing trying to keep husband's nice sweaters nice, I don't think that would go over well. But he's not that much bigger than me anyways, so I could just borrow them… Something to try!

  3. Ha! I steal my fiance's clothes all the time. He's a thin guy, so I can steal most everything (including pants, which may give me a complex).

  4. When my boyfriend wonders why I wear his sweaters (and many other) of his clothes, I always use the reasoning that I'm the one who washes the laundry so I'm allowed to.

I'm not sure it makes full sense, but if hard-pressed for one, I'm sure I could put together a compelling and convincing argument.

Luckily, I'm like Law Mama. I gotta man who's not much bigger than me, so when I'm in the mood for something oversized and slouchy I can always tap into his closet.

Your outfit is painfully adorable, by the way. One of my all time favorites! I just love the pattern and colors of your skirt!

  5. I saw this skirt in Gap last night! I thought for a second, "Hmm what would I wear with this?" Now I might have to go back and get it. 🙂

  6. what a great concept! you always have the best ideas. 😉

the colors here are perfect; you look darling!

    xx elanor

  7. i'd never get away with this one, as my boyfriend is so damn skinny that any shrinkage of his sweaters would render them unwearable for me as well. however, i did steal a belt the other day so i can't complain. here's to the menswear trend and loving men with good taste!

  8. If I wasn't married to a complete giant, I would definitely take advantage of his clothes. I love your color palette here!

  9. Ha! I have a similar tactic, but my skinny husband is only a couple sizes bigger than me – works for the oversized look. So I just say "hey can I borrow this thanks bye!" and if he protests, I threaten to go shopping. Shuts him up every time 🙂

  10. I saw that skirt in Gap before Christmas and spent some time very obviously fondling it and saying "Hmmm this skirt is preeeeetty". Unfortch for me, Husband didn't take the bait. So I think it's only fair that I get a free sweater out of him instead. Mwahahahaha.

  11. cute cute! my boyfriend is over a foot taller than me, so i won't be raiding his sweaters anytime soon, unless the sleeves to the floor look is going to come into style.

  12. My boyfriend is usually supportive of me borrowing clothes, however, we live a state away, so it's never for too long. I love that skirt.

  13. Ah! If only I could be so lucky – boyfriend isn't quite as busty as I am, so it's tough to find a good fit 🙂 I'm definitely guilty of stealing dress socks and wearing them as knee socks. I'm a huge fan of these over-the-knee socks with tights though – I just wore something similar the other day!

  14. wohoo!! My sweet sweet husband has plenty (too many i'd say) lovely sweaters I've been waiting for him to get tired of so i can wear them, but now I know the trick ;)! thanks so much!! hehe

  15. you're so clever 😀 My favourite comfy sweater also used to be my BF's – of course I had nothing to do with the shrinking (;

  16. Hmmm, my hubbie wears an XL so that would have to be a lot of shrinkage going on but clever idea!! Love that GAP skirt.

  17. Husband won't buy sweaters anymore because he thinks I purposely shrink them to steal them… and he's totally right so I completely understand his stand on the issue. Shrinking his Gap argyle sweater was the best thing that happened to my wardrobe.

  18. Well aren't you sneaky? I borrowed my BF's tee just the other day but unfortunately he asked for it back!

  19. Hahahaha…..you are so bad! And I love it…and you are cute, stylish, funny…and oh so lovely!!! Loving the outfit today.

  20. That happened to us, except I didn't try to steal it on purpose. But I did steal it after it shrunk and wore it a few times, but then I washed it AGAIN without thinking and it came out doll size. Now we both miss that sweater.

  21. haha good plan but, my BF is all about synthetic fibers. I would have to try really hard to shrink something.

  22. You are much more inconspicuous than I am! I just tell him I want it and take it 🙂

I wore a flannel of Brett's last week that I love.

  23. BWAHAHAHA! My older sister shrank my first-ever cashmere sweater, when I was about 10. As you can see, I still haven't forgiven her…

    Super cute steal!

  24. Awesome! Love this outfit and the close up photo of you. BTW we passed the Skeen building at NMSU. Is it named after you?

  25. The timing of this post is perfect! My husband got a sweater for Christmas and I love it but I don't think he'll wear it. I don't think I need to shrink it, but I've been looking for warmer clothes to wear in my freezing classroom at work. His new sweater is just what I need! Thanks!

  26. Haha I discovered this trick this winter, except I don't have to sneakily shrink mine. My boyfriend is tiny and only a little bigger than me. And I like my sweaters a bit oversized anyway. But they have all been gradually moving over to my side of the closet. In fact, I'm wearing one of his right now!

You look adorable, btw. I love that skirt 🙂

  27. a+ for step one. boyfriend's closet is so helpful if you have a trusty pair of leggings or skinnies handy.

    ps, amandamantes.blogspot.com !

  28. dearest kendi,
i love the sweater idea. but can we talk about your header ADD? i have to confess, my favorite of your headers was a couple headers ago, but now i can't even remember what it looked like. i liked yesterday's header, too. this one? maybe notsomuch, but that's nunna my business and actually, i will maybe not even post this comment because i HATE when people leave negative comments. it's so rude and i always think, "don't they have anything better to do???" i suppose it's because blogs make everyone think that we're all best friends, so we need to be honest with each other. but sometimes we just need to be nice to each other. and lie. forget honesty. but, this time i thought i'd say: we come for your writing and your clothes (both of which we LOVE), not for your header. so don't stress about it.
    xo,

  29. gah! i just re-read my comment and it sounds so rude! i'm the worst! how do people live with themselves when they leave mean comments? i promise i did not intend it to be mean.
apparently i just can't deal with change. change that baby all you want and i swear i'll never leave even a remotely negative comment again.

  30. My husband has been hiding his Pringle sweater just because of that reason..lol I really like the print on that skirt. Going to gap.com right now!

  31. Just discovered your blog a few days ago and I had to comment today – HILARIOUS TITLE! And on a random note: I totally ordered those exact boots a few days ago and I'm anxiously awaiting their arrival! I stalked a girl at the mall who was wearing them and demanded that she tell me about them. 🙂

  32. Ok can your husband teach my bf how to take pictures like yours? They are just so amazing and clear! What camera do you guys have?

    Now the outfit: amazing!

  33. I like the sneaky way that you went about this. But I don't think that the outfit is your best. I would rather see a top that contrasted the skirt. It flares out so to balance that you need some thing tighter on top… Just my opinion…

  34. Oh, I bought that skirt one day when every thing was 40% off, including sale items, so it was like $11 or something crazy like that. It's sooo comfortable I got it in the other color combo (black with white squares) too. I like to wear it with a tucked in, solid color fitted tee though, short or long sleeve.

I LOVE your boots. LOVE. Do you have any tricks for getting a free pair of those that doesn't involve a husband or a dryer?

  35. steal some flannel and make a cute outfit out of that. i keep trying on the hub's flannel shirts but feel to hipster and wimp out. 😉

  36. this is the thing- every time i see something that catches my eye in a store, i'm like, no, that won't look good on me. and then you wear it and i'm like, crap- it does look good. why didn't i buy that?!

    today- your skirt. 🙂
    thanks for keeping me inspired!

  37. Very cute! I saw that skirt at Gap (on sale too), but couldn't figure out what to do with it. Now more ideas are flowing. Thanks!!

  38. This outfit has convinced me to buy this skirt — I've been eyeing it for so darn long! I love the way you put it together, too. Might have to steal that, and a sweater from the boyfriend.

  39. I love to "shop" my mom's and sister's closets. Mom has so much great "old" stuff that she doesn't want anymore or is at least willing to temporarily part with. And now, sister is off to study abroad with limited suitcases so I can to "shop" the leftovers!

  40. I have been hawking this skirt forever, but could NOT, for the life of me, figure out what I'd wear with it. But, I love what you've done!

    Gracey
