8.23.10eI thought that I’d do a back to school post since my mom, sister-in-law and about half of my friends on facebook went back to school today. I of course did not go back to school from summer vacation but I did go back to work from my weekend, so that’s celebration enough. Plus Monday mornings always make me a little nauseous and uneasy, just like the first day of school. I am happy to report that I did not miss the bus today and I was not late to my first class, Starbucks 101.

My husband asked me if I can still remember what I wore on the first day of school for specific years. I remember 3rd, 7th , 9th and 10th grade like it was yesterday. But 7th grade — ahh 7th grade, that year was especially unique in my memory. Imagine with me guys — me, 13 years old, lots of teeth with lots of orthodontia going on inside my mouth, and the bushiest eyebrows you’ve ever seen. (Basically I looked like a teddy bear with glitter teeth when I smiled.) I wanted to look older since I was no longer in elementary, so I raided my mom’s closet from which I settled on mom’s denim jumper and an oversized orange t-shirt underneath. No denim jumper would be complete without Keds and some white socks. It was 1997 after all. 3 years till Y2K — I had to live it up.
Do you like my courses for this semester?
8.23.10hLooks like I’ll be hitting the books hard for flower arranging and the art of husbandry. Wish me luck. If I get all A’s, the husband will take me shopping.

  1. hey hey, what wonderful timing! i'm planning my first day of school outfit for tomorrow and i'm feeling a little nauseous, too, but less in a funny way–the first day of teaching STILL makes me so nervous!
    silly.
also, we started seventh grade in the same year! i wore adidas superstars, but i'm pretty sure the keds were saved for the second day of school 🙂

  2. You totally went shopping as soon as the 30 for 30 was up – that blazer is new at GAP :P.

I'm kind of obsessed with this outfit because it has almost everything I am obsessed with for fall – blazers, floaty silk tops, khaki, and brogues. I just realized that my obsessions make me sound like a frumpy middle aged lit professor, but I promise I am not. (Although I do have an inordinate and possibly unhealthy passion for tweed in the winter time…)

  3. This might be my all time FAVORITE photo shoot ever of yours! Its just delightful, as are you. So adorable and inspiring for fall! LOVE it!

  4. What a great outfit!! I love the back to school pics, your hubby is an awesome photographer!!

I must add that I only remember what I wore on the first day of school in 6th grade, a red shirt, tucked in with a black belt and pair of jeans. I remember because I got my period for the first time that morning!!! Can you believe that??

  5. Oh my, this is too sweet! I don't know how you guys do it but such perfect pictures everytime!
Good luck with your courses! 😉

  6. Love, love, love this outfit!
I'm becoming addicted to your blog, your styling sense really rocks…
Talking of addiction and Kendi I created a new word in your honour…"kendiction"!
    Do you like it:)?
(no, you don't need to pay me royalties if you decide to use this word, some chocolate will do fine 😀 )

  7. this post made me smile! you are adorable as usual — but you know eventually you're gonna have to cough up proof that you were really all that awkward in middle school! i highly doubt it!

  8. awesome pictures!! that looks like it was so much fun. PS – I want that building a record library book!! 🙂

  9. I still remember 9th, but that's it, probably because it was a big year for me (moved to a new school district).

I love this outfit. It's so great, it only makes me wish I could actually wear more fall clothes but summer is only just beginning here in Southern California.

    Saltwatering.

  10. Ha, I graduated from high school in 1997. I had an awesome pair of loafer-clogs from Esprit that I wore everyday. All the teachers hated them because I sounded like a horse coming down the hall.

Oh, I want that blazer so bad.

  11. Cute post! I'm impressed you can remember what you wore, I have no clue, although I'm sure it was probably just my navy uniform. I looked like a Madeline doll in it, unfortunately for me that is my name as well, so a lot of teasing occurred for me in the 7th grade 🙁 eek economics, if you need any help I used to be an economist lol.

  12. love this post! what a gorgeous location and your outfit gets me so excited for fall! but i'm suddenly worried because i can't recall any outfit from first days. weird.

  13. My girlcrush is growing like the Nothing from the Neverending Story. But, you know, non-threatening.

Grade Nine. First day of high school. Neon pink cropped Point Zero nylon jacket with neoprene cuffs and zip that a Quebecois exchange student gave me and I thought was the height of fashion. A seagull crapped on me at lunch. Probably because I was the most visible target.

Seriously wish I still had that jacket though – 20 years later and I could totally see Rihanna rocking it.

  14. Great post! Gotta love the "first day of school jitters." What's even better is that my mom kept a photo record of every first day of school! Back in the 90s I was definitely rocking some crazy trends….I do remember loving my converse sneakers and, gulp, purple jeans!

  15. aww!! im loving the props n the themes of the photoshoot 😀 hahaha,, buttt seriouslllyyy,, econ book is a big NO NO for me!! :DD

    xoxo

  16. Ha ha love that you added an apple to your props. I took an apple my first ever day of school aged 5. I am also not going back to school but I did get my French GCSE result today (not sure what the US equivalent is but the kids here take them aged 15-16), I took adult education evening classes as my family have a house in France and achieved an A* which is the highest you can get : )

  17. I think you could probably fail every other course but as long as you get an A in the art of husbandry, he should still take you shopping. 🙂

Love the outfit! I haven't tried the oxford shoe trend yet but they're so cute with this outfit that it makes me want to go get some!

  18. I'm a junior in college, and I wish I could make back to school look as fabulous as you do! I love the way you compose all of your photos!

  22. i LOVE that jacket! these pictures are really adorable and kinda make me want to go back to school!

  23. cute post! you should do a remix of your husband's accessories…introduce a new piece of your husband's wardrobe into each outfit. because i shop in my husband's closet all the time for belts, hats, oxfords and i love seeing other gals do the same!

  24. that's the gap herringbone band blazer, isn't it? i LOVE that jacket. i tried it on in store and bought it online in petite. i can't wait to wear it 🙂

  25. Well, my dear, if you were going to school, you'd be looking smashing on your first day in this outfit. I love the jacket.

Good luck with flower pressing, don't study too hard 😉

  26. I am old(ha, almost 30) and far removed from back to school but work at a college, and no one is dressed this nicely. I do love the feeling of back-to-school though, and love this post.
