To my 3rd grade teacher, who laughed at me on career day when I dressed up as a model:
You were so right. When I dressed up as a model on career day, you scolded me saying that “modeling isn’t a real career” and then asked why I didn’t dress up like a doctor or lawyer like the rest of the kids. Well, Mrs. Partain, do you know why I didn’t want to be a doctor or a lawyer? Because it was hard to find a kid-sized pant suit and briefcase at the time and doctor scrubs are hard to come by. Also, my mother forgot that it was career day so she slapped some baby prostitute make-up on me, handed me a Caboodle, said “You’re a model!!” and pushed me out the door. Mrs. Partain, if you are out there and you have the internet and you still hate baby girl models/prostitutes, this is for you. Thank you for teaching me that no matter what your career choice, it just matters what you wear.

  1. Thank you for always making me laugh.

Once for Halloween I just threw random things together and my mom gave me some red lipsitck and fake eyelashes. I was supposed to be a "rockstar." I looked like a prostitute.

    Love those shoes.

  2. LOOL this is funny.

  4. I got the same treatment when I dressed as a ballerina for my career day when I was in the 2nd grade, my teacher told me I was to tall to be a ballerina, not that I have any desire to be a ballerina, but thanks for killing the dreams of a 7 year old!

  5. Your posts make me laugh so much!! I really look forward to you making me laugh each evening ๐Ÿ™‚

When I went to see the careers advisor I said I wanted to be a journalist, which I was very interested in until I realised I disliked how fake the media is.. She just looked at me and said that if I enjoyed writing I would be better suited to being a secretary and writing letters for a lawyer!!! Talk about destroying a teenager's sense of ambition!

  6. This is a sad but amazingly funny story, Kendi! I'm loving the stripes with solids look you have going on here. And you've now totally inspired me to pose with shipping crates more often. That 3rd picture with the sun peeking in up top is great.

  7. I concur!! It doesn't matter what career you have just how you dress for it!! Great story, i'm glad my mom wasn't the only mom who didn't always have time for my costumes.

I love your 30 day challenge too! So great!

  8. On year for Halloween (I was probably 8) I wanted to wear my sister's fake fur coat, so I decided to dress up as a "rich lady." This involved a red dress w/ spaghetti straps and a bra which my mom & I stuffed to give me boobs. I also wore high heels, the fur coat, had my hair in a big poufy up-do, wore tons of mascara & red lipstick. And of course, the fake fur coat. I don't think I looked much like a "rich lady" but more like a hooker.

On a similar note (& things that always stick with you), I remember one time my mom was talking to a friend of her's and the friend had really long red nails. I was probably 5 & I told her that her nails were really pretty. She thanked me and then said to my mom, "When I was in high school, I started painting my nails red. And my mother hated it, but she said, 'If you're going to paint your nails that color, you better not let them chip or you'll look like a hooker!'" I try never to let my red nail polish chip.

  9. Of course you can have your award 2 weeks late! There are no deadlines as far as I'm concerned. Deadlines make it feel like work, and I'd rather keep blogging just fun! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I love this post! When I was in kindergarten, my room was full of CareBears of every color imaginable. One day we were reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and we had an assignment to color a bear. Mine was some shade of pastel, and the teacher called my mom to tell her that I was the only child that didn't color their bear brown or black, and that obviously I was not well adjusted or just not too bright. Now I work in advertising ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I wanted to be a flight attendant. I even scored high for that profession on those highly (over)rated career tests you take in high school. The next time I flew after getting the results, the stewardess's(<–I'm such a rebel) on our flight were all over 50 and haggard as hell.

Stop wearing shoes that only people with amazingly long pins can pull off. It's depressing and unfair.

  12. love this outfit! especially love it infront of the big red thing — i hope you carried around an obnoxious red purse or something ๐Ÿ˜‰

ps – i wanted to be a rockette and a dance teacher. but mostly, i wanted not to work and to just see the world. damnit. i think i had it right in my younger days…

  13. Wow, your teacher was such a dream crusher! What if you really wanted to be a model. Well you sure showed her didn't you! Great outfit! I am in total love with your shoes. I almost bought them last year, but my husband was giving me the stink eye when I picked them up. So back on the shelf they went:(

  14. Your teacher is a meanie… look at you now. Running a successful fashion blog (how long until you quit work and do this fulltime) and posing like a pro…

  15. I wanted to own a vegetable stand in a street market somewhere. I still do! Wow, your teacher wasn't very supportive. No wonder I always hated school!

  16. BAHAHAHA baby prostitute make-up! haha!

When I was in 2nd grade I came home and told my mom that I had to dress up like "the olden days" for school the next day….she dressed me up like I was from Victorian era England….
    My teacher meant the '60s.

I stand out like a sore thumb in the class picture with my bun, poofy dress, and parasol.
