Do you ever wake up and the outfit you planned to wear just doesn’t work out? This has been happening a lot to me lately. They seem like such good ideas in my head while I’m drifting off to sleep but in reality, I look like a hot mess who is running late. “Outfit Theories” as my husband calls them. I also do this when I pack for a trip. I conjure up these crazy outfits and whenever I get to where I’m going, I can’t find anything to wear. Anyways, that is what happened this morning. My outfit theory just did not work in any way, so I had to pull something together fast. I decided on the trusty ol’ boots + blazer + skirt combo. You just can’t go wrong. It may not be my best outfit, but hey it isn’t the worst, right?
Last night our two best friends came down from Austin to eat dinner with us. Since I needed to take my outfit picture I ended up having to tell them about my blog. I haven’t really told anyone about this yet, since I’m still new to everything. Really only my best friend and husband know. (Well and you guys of course.) But as it turns out they were totally cool and didn’t even call me vain, at least not to my face. Now those are true friends. But it makes me wonder if this is normal — to have a blog and not tell anyone about it. If you have a style/fashion blog or a personal blog, do you keep it a secret or tell everyone you know about it?

  1. I started my blog and when I got the hang of it, I let some people know. Unfortunately, my brother is really proud and he's told lots of people. Now, I know a lot of people from my church read it and it does freak me out. I'm a pretty open person but there are people that I don't know well or don't really even like and I feel like they 'own' a part of me by reading my blog.
And yeah, if one doesn't folow or understand fashion blogs, I look like a total superficial dweeb (I am actually) taking pictures of myself….

  2. I have the same issue with "outfit theories" which is why I have to actually try things on to see how they work in real life.
I suddenly remember something– (and I don't know if you ever did anything like this)– but as a kid/pre-teen I would totally catalog not only my wardrobe, but my various outfits in my diary. I would even nickname my clothes, a.k.a. Beachy Polkadot Bubble-skirt, and stuff like that.
    It was awesome.

  3. I was the same way at first… but then I slowly let it slip out and then ultimately put it on my facebook account as my website! eh- it was kind of nerve racking actually… but oh, well. I love it and that's all that should matter. by the way, i read that you loved the color block cardigan from Gap and that you wanted to buy it in another color… well.. it's on super sale online right now, so no guilt about buying again!

  4. As far as my blog is concerned, its not like I blurt it out to people when I talk to them but I know my friends are aware that I have one. If they aren't supportive I haven't seen it. I was worried at first if my husband would think I was crazy but he didn't. He supports me and is actually my photographer now. I don't think its a matter of being vain, I just think its a nice way of sharing yourself with others. Plus the blog community is a pretty great bunch of people that you find common interests with. And who doesn't want to meet new people?!? Don't be ashamed..Shout it from the rooftop. Have a great day!

  5. I had my blog for about a year before I spilled the beans to anyone. Even now I've instructed my family and friends not to leave comments on my blog, it freaks me out a bit that they can see my outfit pictures 🙂

  6. I only ever share my blog with people I know if I write something specifically for them. I never advertise my outfit posts – too awkward!

  7. i know just what you mean about "outfit theories". i often work out things in my head the night before, but am usually too lazy to actually try them on to confirm they will work. quite often they do, but sometimes i am stuck in a rush in the morning trying to work something out. i think your back-up outfit looks great though!

  8. I absolutely love every single one of your outfits.

We don't really tell people about our site nor do we use our names or the name of our university on our blog because of the tenuous relationship between fashion and 'intelligencia'. (And we don't want to be searchable by professors or our students).

At first, we all only told our partners about it who were all three very supportive (and still are). With time, I revealed it to close friends and my parents, but I still feel a sense of embarassment at having people I know know just how much thought goes into my look. Isn't that weird? But when you're supposed to be judged on your brains (as is the case in academia) it feels wrong to reveal just how much time and effort you invest in your appearance as well. I don't agree with that philosophy but since I know I'm within the system and can't pretend that it doesn't exist, I play by its rules while I'm trying to establish myself in the field I'm in.

My husband is really supportive though and is always asking if he can tell people about it, which is really sweet. A's family (one of my co-bloggers) has also been super supportive and enthusiastic about it, all reactions that have reaffirmed my belief in people being open minded and appreciating creativity in all its outlets.

Your site is really wonderful and you should only be proud of it!

  9. I totally get not being sure when to tell someone about my blog, because I feel like they're going to think I'm super-vain and judge me. I've opened up to some friends, but have yet to facebook-status every time I make a post.

I found you through myedit's feature on you — love your style and your about me. Consider me a follower.

  10. Your blog is absolutely fantastic!

I found you through my edit, and am an instant follower!

I had my blog for awhile before I really told people. My husband/mom/brother are usually the ones shouting it from the rooftops. My blog is a little different as I rarely take pictures of myself, so I don't feel quite as self-conscious. Not that you have a reason to feel that way.

    Seriously fabulous!

  11. Sooo I just found your blog through myedit (who is also fabulous)! I trusted her judgement clearly and figured I'd stop by. Your blog is fabulous! Your pics are gorgeous! And your style is awesome! For the "pulled together" look, you nailed it! 🙂

  12. I have that blouse too… I actually wore it today on an interview.

I do that with outfits too. Think of something "totally awesome" in my head, panic when it doesn't look as cool as I thought, and end up wearing something blah to work b/c I run out of time. Your outfit is super cute, though 🙂

  13. My blog is a semi-secret. Only a few friends know it exists. My family knows I have a blog, but truthfully, I haven't shared it with them, either!

I started my blog for me. I like having my own little blog secret. It's like my own private world where I can explore fashion on my own terms.

  14. i really like your blog! i just found it through myedit, and i am an instant new follower.
i don't tell almost anyone about my blog–my boyfriend knows, because he takes my pictures; my roommate knows because she sees me posting in tee shirts in the yard in the middle of winter; and my mom knows because, well, she's my mom.
but kudos to you for spilling the beans! maybe one day i'll get brave, too…

  15. So excited to have found your blog, your sense of style is so special and unique, just really adore it. Also really appreciate your honesty in all your posts (the ones I've seen)!
Definitely adore today's outfit, you just inspired to create something similar for myself. As for blogging, not too many people know- the fiance who takes my pictures, my two closest friends, and my folks, who initially got a kick out of seeing me on the internet posing! I think they're proud…

  16. First – I found you blog via My Edit and I'm quickly LOVING it and your style.

Second – To this day there are some people who still don't know I blog. My friends know, my old co-workers know and they all encourage me to just be open about it, but at the same time I feel like my passion for fashion isn't relateable (is that even a word) to what some other people's interests might be. So when they see an outfit post, I always wonder if would they get it? Or would they see it as just another picture of myself.

    Great question.

  17. Love your outfit and photos! Seriously.. perfect! All of my friends, and most of my family know about my blog. It's really annoying having family know.. but friends are no big deal. My dad's girlfriend is always telling me my outfits or accessories were "interesting" or "different" and I'm always so so annoyed. Haha!

  18. I only tell a select few of my friends…my true friends and my immediate family. I never mention it at work or to ther people.

    I don't anyone thinking that I am the style guru and that I know everything…which I don't.

But my sis and mom, tell every damn body!

  19. Honestly I have only told my boyfriend. Another friend accidentally stumbled upon it when doing a google search (we're both sorta nerdy, we love Latin, and my blog's name is in Latin – so I guess it was bound to happen). I wouldn't know how to explain it to the other people in my life – knowing them, they would either think I am a) weird b) vain c) going to get killed by someone who stalks me on the internet.

But I sort of wish I had people I could mention it to, it feels like a weird little secret.

  20. OMG, I thought I was the only one with the secret blog life! I totally feel the same way. Having just gotten out of grad school, I haven't told my school friends about my blog because, well, it's like academicchic says – fashion and the intelligentsia don't really mix. In fact, I started my blog as a way to rediscover pleasure in all those things I had put aside while in school.

  21. Haha, and I thought I was the only one with a secret blog life too! Thanks for this post, it addresses many of my fears of being crazy or vain.
I love your outfits always!!! I've only been a follower about a week now but I am really inspired by your looks.
